Workers on the frontlines of public health have a lot on their plate, from eliminating disease, reducing workplace injuries, and ensuring clean water and better sanitation, to keeping our food safe to eat. But a patchwork of reporting systems across the country isn't always effective, and public health officials - under-funded and short-staffed - face the added hazard of hate mail from the public just for doing their job. CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jonathan LaPook reports on a "brain drain" that threatens our nation's health security.

If no one else says it, I really appreciate everything my public health department has done for everyone around me.

Keep on being around those that do care and do their jobs, in your department. We need more departments in this country, doing that.

As a masters trained Health Promotion specialist who worked on the front lines of the HIV epidemic my heart goes out to all of those currently working in Public Health. It’s true, as a society we take PH for granted and act as if they’re the enemy when they are working hard to get it right.

I often worry for those who are either not getting the right sort of medical advice, or going to health departments that don’t get the right assistance, for their own health.

OK.. YOU HAVE ALL THE COLLEGES FIRING PROFESSORS FOR FREE SPEECH. When was the public works audited for un-needed positions, top-heavy management positions, and more? CBS NEEDS AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER ON THIS WITH THE PLUSSES AND NEGATIVES. DO NOT JUST GIVE A HALF A REPORT. SERVE THE PUBLIC AS YOUR CHARTER STATES! FEEL FREE TO ADD MORE TO THIS POST.
