We recently flew a series of aircraft flying over an array of calibrated microphones, demonstrating the low noise profile of our prototype electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft and setting a benchmark for the industry.
In addition to the Joby aircraft, the ‘parade’ of aircraft included two fixed-wing airplanes and three helicopters of a similar size - all flown over the microphone array at the same speed (100 kts) and approximate altitude (1570 ft).
“We set out to develop an aircraft that mimicked natural sounds, like the wind in the trees or the sound of the ocean. It’s just amazing to hear the contrast between existing aircraft and what we have developed over more than ten years of hard work and focus on acoustics,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby.
We aim for our aircraft to blend into the background environment of communities in which we operate, enabling aerial ridesharing without any compromises, which we intend to launch in 2024.

I live in NYC next to the Hudson River, and the noise from tourist helicopters 3 or 4 times an hour is so bad I have to shut my windows during the day in the summer. I cannot wait until they outlaw those noisy machines in favor of electric VTOL. Plus, I'd really like to take a ride in one of those things.

@@matthewspry4217 I can feel the helicopter inside my house before I can hear the help, rattles the entire structure, thankfully Helicopters are becoming more rare. Only see Medical, tiny training heli's or Billionaire or two once in a while. I go weeks without hearing helicopters in my area of 8 million. Helicopters have become to expensive for TV/radio stations and most others as well, good time for JOBY. Joby has a bright future barring no big setbacks or FAA issues out of thin air. JOBY recently proved the excitement is building, 79 million shares traded in one day, rocketing JOBY above @11, almost to $12. To all the nay sayers, JOBY is the real deal, innovating for the ages, building now toward a Trillion dollar new industry > 2030. a A Duh moment.

I've heard some electric aircraft in Oregon, but in fairness, don't think they were Joby's. The overall decibels are quieter, but they had a horrific high frequency. Imagine a decibel reader in the room with you when your teeth slip against eachother and gives you goosebumps or nails on a chalkboard. Both will barely register on a decibel reader, but both can take you from zero to 60 in a millisecond.

Wow. Nice. Un-mentioned is that with 6 large variable pitch props, each prop disc is under VERY LOW load, and so has the OPTION to turn very very slowly.

Parked near the house." Well, I can give you one example. Last time (and only time so far) I went to Yosemite National Park here in California. I had a Friday off so I was going to take the train from San Jose to Merced, and then take the bus the next morning. Well, I missed the train in San Jose, and all the flights to Fresno from SF were full. So I ended up taking Greyhound. It takes four or five hours. Which is a downer, because it means I couldn't use that option if I were working Friday. (can't get on Greyhound after work and get to Merced, they don't run late enough). But Joby from San Jose International to Merced Regional Airport would have been great! Probably 30 minutes or so, sleep overnight in a hotel and then go to Yosemite on the YARTS bus the next morning! Or another example...in many cases there are direct flights out of SFO that you can't get out of San Jose, but going from SJ to SFO takes an hour on Caltrain, and if you don't live in downtown, you still have to travel from there to the airport (the airport in SJ is in downtown, or like two miles north). Joby could fly you from SJC to SFO in like ten minutes, then you could get on your SFO flight! :)

I live next to an Airport in Watsonville, CA about 15 minutes south of Santa Cruz, CA. I also live about 1/2 mile from a Hospital and I hear all those aircrafts at all hours nearly every single day and some single engine sesna aircraft with bad engines make even louder humming noises and what I wouldn't give to have dozens upon dozens of Joby produced aircrafts flying in and out of the local (small airport) and or making the back and fourth emergency trips in Joby Aircraft. Hopefully someday soon. And it's not just me, several others have complained about aircrafts 'buzzing' their homes in the Santa Cruz mountains as well. Good Luck to Joby Aircraft/ Aviation in future endeavors, can't wait to see your company get it done.

Have you seen them in real life? Go see and hear for yourself before promoting... oh yes, less decibels, but... well, just go hear for yourself. Maybe Joby actually got it right, but be prudently diligent in researching what you permit and promote regarding aviation in our communities.

No doubt the Joby props are quieter. What rpm are they running at in order to get a lower tip speed from a larger diameter prop, and is that typical for the type of mission you will be running? And are you using more washout on the tips?

Thank you for your response. There are several angles I'm looking from here (Just thinking out loud without any claim to be an authority, but I have some thoughts). Innovation, production, regulation, consumer and investor. Innovation: A big plus here but I would like to see a back-up plan for a 2-4 seater also looking at alternative fuel source like Hydro-Nano as an option but if not, this is already good enough for the public to make a choice to purchase IMHO. Production: The race is on so I do understand the choice to go with Uber and their 75 mio investment. Keeping in mind, novelty and accessibility has an edge but being first is not always the biggest long-term victory however many brands have future plans which says nothing about today as experimental vehicles are not guaranteed to make it to the production-line. (See Vahana) Also: What really is in production right now? I know people love to have a glimpse at future options, but many have not opened up to take orders yet. What really is available today if I would like to purchase and at what price? Regulation: This should be looked at so that's also why I am was a bit worried about the involvement by Uber although that has two sides as well. I know it's a task but an advantage can be taken here when the regulations for more countries is available. When for example European Regulation can be less strict based upon technical safety, this would be a big plus when that would be available and CE certified might be the opening to get that done. Consumer: For the consumer novelty, production, commute time, reduced noise pollution, price, maintenance service, fuel, acceptance are important issues. Freedom not being the last in the decision making. Novelty is where the blackfly has an advantage but popular also means short lived and the market will soon look for a more serious concept like Joby or Alia. I doubt the carbon footprint will the a biggest plus looking from the consumers perspective, this is getting into politics and frankly, people don't care to pollute if they have an advantage, depending on social constructs it's nice to be within the realm of public opinion however fuel access is a much bigger issue. One seaters are cool but not very practical for young families with the average of 2 adults + 1-2 children/or a third adult size offspring. (Offering the choice of 2 limited size seats (children) in the back or a single seat (Adult) might be a simple but good advantage. One very big plus would be the integration of solar panels which can be very easily done for on route re-fueling which adds towards the sense of freedom and Range going from a one way trip and back into twice range while recharging for the trip back home. For the more professional use of the craft having a direct connection as the end user with Joby could become the survival in disturbing times for the company long-term. The technical side and the freedom of the company's decision making directly influences the consumer so I'm cautious about big instant lump sums as that doesn't say everything either. Investor: I have this gut feeling this market is similar to the Internet bubble in regards to new inventions, innovation, future prospects, production etc. but with a big difference that if there would be a collapse on the market, the consumer will still want the product although after the first craze the long-term value will become more realistic. For the bigger investors this might become a part of diversification or they are gambling on novelty mid-term or an indirect advantage for the company by adding service in their field to win from the competition. (See ALIA BETA) overall in their company long-term. For the smaller investor this might be interesting short term but overall this seems a new long-term innovation which can be sensitive when it is not directly a technical advantage for the company. The overall innovation changes are less sensitive for practical application but will adapt over time after giving ROI and a new perspective to go from. (Think hydro-power or any other new source which would eliminate the recharging where Range could become ten-twenty times in one refuel, this would not directly influence practical usage for bigger investors having a technical application, for the consumer this would instantly mean a big change as there are other reasons to make a purchase in the emotional sense of freedom) ALIA BETA has the bigger investors behind it but at this point that does not have to be a big neg for Joby as this market is very new so loyalty from any bigger investor might crumble on secondary issues like maintenance/parts or political preference. No matter how big investors are, if the public decides different, they bought a bubble long term where they will opt for land transportation in rural areas. This is also the reason why I think Joby would be smart to have a back-door product which directly deals with the end user which the bigger investors could use to resonate with the market where they B2 type shares or non voting shares would become a lot more interesting for the average investor knowing they have the advantage over big tech. I like Joby a lot - Easy does it. This is a transportation revolution long-term with the face of JoeBen which the consumer can relate to rather than big tech. Do it right the first time and it will be a success for sure. (IMHO) Regards, Hans Stam - Netherlands

Congratulations from brazil, low noise is one of most important features in this sector.. another important factor is a removable batteries (also ejectable in fligth in case of fire) and external air bag, for emergency situation, both my projects.

@@user-rr3yw9dn1l is rare but all of batteries can self burn, imagine that in a aircraft. In the next future, all of aircraft must be solve this subject, my solution is simple, project the aircrafts with ejectable batteries (of course with parachutes),. is simple, put the batteries under the aircraft, easy. Aobut safety for commuter vtol crafts, put airbags for outside action (in case of critical control/electric problems). Maybe both simple things can save many lifes.

Measure the Cessna caravan which the skydive company here uses. Upon departure it loops around my house while climbing from 0 to 8500’ and as soon as the jumpers jump, it nosedives back to the airport. Repeats every 20 minutes all day.

I am kind of sensitive to the noise, especially in the night that I couldn’t sleep. Even the slight vibration of my phone can make me very upset. I believe that Joby All-electric aircraft can protect many people like me from the noise. I remember a book I read last year, which mentioned that according to the latest research, Noise pollution is more harmful to people than air pollution. So you guys really did an amazing thing! Actually, I am interested in the propeller on your aircraft , what material is it machined from? If this is not a secret. Because I learned from this video that it may be critical in reducing the aircraft’s noise. I ask this because ZTL also makes a lot of parts used for Electric aircraft. I guess we may also have made similar material. Looking forward to your sharing the answer. Thank you.

Excellent video, quite convincing. You might want to add the tailrotor as a noise source for the helicopter. The difference is quite pronounced as models equipped with shrouded tail fan or NOTAR blower show.

Joby, I recently had a situation where your technology would have worked well! I was going to take a train from San Jose, California, to Merced, to go to Yosemite. Alas, I missed the train. And it turned out all the commercial flights from San Francisco to Fresno were full. I ended up taking Greyhound, which took five hours. If only a Joby eVTOL had been available, I could have gone to the GA airport in Palo Alto and ridden the Joby eVTOL from there to the GA airport in Merced in about 30 minutes or so! (there used to be a GA airport in San Jose, Reid-Hillview, but I think they shut it down, not sure.) Or even better...go to the top of a parking garage in down town San Jose and take an eVTOL from there! (I'm not sure if that would be allowed with SJC so close though.) But yeah..this is going to be disruptive when these vehicles start getting certified by the FAA. :-O

Q's and suggestion: When I found out Uber was involved, I instantly got worried about the possibility of added regulations coming from them and what that means for the pilot or ownership of the vehicle. My first worry is Uber will dictate the price per flight and the advantage for the pilot compared to unregulated prices like ferry services. My second worry is ownership internationally, if Uber get to be serviced first, what would that mean for the European market for example, when will it be available and again, at what price not that Uber has a say in revenue over production costs. I totally get all the advantages of an outside funding to make things happen but to be totally honest, my gut feeling tells me agenda will get more focus than the technology and again the general public will feed the big investors over their own advantage. That being said, I think this is an awesome vehicle and I would love to fly one in the near future. What made the difference for me is the range, speed, 4 seater + pilot. I don't know yet about the costs per vehicle and maintenance requirements or the time it takes to recharge or that process. Compared to AirBus this vehicle totally wins do Vahara will probably never go beyond the demo version and city airbus is not even close to being ready and I expect their range will be a big negative. For the lower segment of the market I am missing the advantage of range not necessarily speed. Also having my eye on the blackfly, the biggest advantage is consumer availability and being regulated under Ultra-Light which allows it to have more freedom for the regular public, the neg is range but still wins from the Vahana/Airbus which has a range of about 50 km where blackfly has a range of 68 km which makes it more a recreational vehicle rather than usable transport although I have a hunch they will do great in the lower segment. Looking at these brands/vehicles, I totally understand it's unfair to compare because of the huge differences however I am missing the middle solution of a 2-3 seat vehicle which an awesome range and easy and reasonable recharging time. Weather adaptive, so not only fly on a nice sunny day but also on a fairly windy and clouded day. Recharge time about 3-7 hours is very ok, solar powered recharging which has a system to take with you integrated in the vehicle itself (which gives you even more freedom in range by taking a refuel on route) range 350-450 km, 2-3 seat incl pilot and perhaps 75 kilo cargo additional and most importantly fully owned by the company with a direct connection to the end-user. THAT would really change the world if the price range will be affordable for the general public like 45K USD - 38K EUR. IMHO I think Joby has the technology to do this if they would take complete ownership or non-voting shares to have complete control over that market without outside demands or revenue obligations. Remember, Flying is about freedom whereas it is easy to get drawn into flying on a chain. Wishing Joby all the luck in the world as I am totally in love with this technology and I think you have done an amazing job which is more than anyone could expect from an all electric vehicle! Uber has shown that it is a company capable of scaling worldwide and battling the regulatory challenges associated with it. Being backed by Uber is a major competitive advantage to seeing this mission to fruition, however as you noted, there could be potential complications. The fact that Uber had confidence to make this type of investment shows that Joby is at the forefront of the eVTOL revolution. Interested to hear more of your thoughts on the subject!

I think the premise of comparison is that all aircraft have the same takeoff weight and flying speed.

It is meaningless if the takeoff weights are different, one is big and the other is small.

Well, if you fly with significant less weight (no passengers and small battery), descending and minimum speed every aircraft can be as silent as that. Usually propellers are much louder than ducted fans with the same tip speed. A better comparison would be to fly exactly the same mission with MTOM and use several measurements.

Maybe Joby is different, but the few times I've heard electric planes near Bend Municipal Airport (they didn't look like this, so perhaps different maker), in ways they do sound overall quieter but they have a body and ear piercing high frequency noise. I actually think this video might have captured some, but it is nearly inaudible because it's so high pitched, think actual decibels of your teeth rubbing wrong or nails on chalkboard. If the aviation industry is actually going to go this route, I hope Joby and others are being fully transparent about the ultra high pitched frequency. We know that since flight began, there has been NO viable, enforced regulation on General Aviation noise and unjustifiably weak regulations of jet noise, causing decades of immense and unnecessary suffering for citizens, wildlife and lifestock.

Nice. Helicopters were hover and yours were level flight however. Maybe not completely honest :)

Helis appeared to not be hovering, but rather in straight and level flight. So, yeah, complete honest. Look at the video again.

@@DanFrederiksen Hi -- if you look at other videos on our channel, we've posted demonstrations of the acoustics in take-off and hover. This video, however, is specifically focused on overhead flight noise, and our aircraft is in wing-borne flight (as depicted) when flying overhead. Yes, that lowers its noise signature -- that's the point!

@@briangarrett-glaser3241 This is the first with any reference. You can do another video comparing hover. I'd think that particularly compared to a helicopter setting down you should have distinct advantage so that seems like an obvious demo. Remember to have people or equiv weight in it.

That seems unfair. These aircraft are much faster and have a shorter exposure time. 100 kts is very slow, dragfull (flaps) and inefficient for a fixed wing aircraft. And you know too well..

One maybe less noisy, but you get thousands of these in the air at the same time 24/7 which is what this company is envisioning to replace mostly silent cars. it will be loud 24/7. To someone who is sound and noise sensitive this is going to be a nightmare. You ever watch the jetsons cartoon? That's what it will be like. Air traffic instead of car traffic. Never again will you go out in nature and see beautiful sky mostly unobstructed by man to help you relax and find some peace. All you will see are thousands of these stupid planes, because they want to replace you owning a car with permanent rideshare like a sky uber. Always having to pay to go anywhere. They willl probably be able to jack up prices at will. Sure they can do this with gas, but at least i own it and can go wherever whenever i want and as far as i want. Guess what. It only goes 150 miles probably less than that with five people in it, before your forced to wait on another plane. Guess what. if not properly maintained these things will probably be a daily thing falling out of the sky and landing on homes like private, small engine planes now. I dont know about you, but i like looking up at the sky and seeing nothin but beauty and hearing nothing for the most part as long as your not in a big city.

Comparing apples with eggs. What was the All Up Weight of the Joby compared to the others - especially the AW109? For sure at least 60% lighter for the Joby. Plus the flyover is not the troublesome part - it is the Vertical landing and takeoff that produce by far the most noise - let's see a side-by-side comparison of a real (not model) Joby with a Bell 206 in this situation. Wonder why that was not demonstrated?
