Trains 21 is a documentary of railroading in the 21st century and a look at the fascinating world of transportation. On this channel we deal with all aspects of trains with a strong focus on the Northeast USA.
The goal is for you to learn a lot in a short amount of time.. A major infusion of knowledge in just a few minutes.. And if those few minutes distilled some of the best railroad information in the industry, we feel that we've done our job..
The trick is clarity.. Clear, concise and on point.. New videos are uploaded frequently and if you like what you see, comment, like and subscribe (in that order!).

Good stuff. Never thought about that. My experience was SP so there wasn't much thought in paint schemes in my day. lol. Check that! As a kid, the big, yellow "Sunbeam" steam engine and passenger cars were fabulous to see. Big D to Houston Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and return Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Of course, there was also the Texas Eagle [MoP]. Not todays' TE.

As someone who has done this job for many years. I can tell you that there is nothing more satisfying than painting a railroad locomotive. It is hard work but when you see the locomotive finished, looking stunning it is worth all the effort.

As someone who has painted many locomotives, I can say it is a very satisfying job. It’s hard work and not for the faint hearted,and there is a lot of health and safety involved. But when you see the locomotive finished , looking stunning, it’s all worth it.

Well researched and presented, as usual, AC. The costs breakdown show how monumental the NS Heritage Unit program was to NS. One then begins to question why an NS could not run those units in the wash whenever they were shopped; which has the side benefit of giving longer life to those expensive 2 part paints. On another front, I began to wonder what Progress Rail did or did not do when those Heritage units like the PC, the Reading and DLW began to flake off in big chunks......inadequate prepping of the primer before top coating?
@Trains21

Thanks for watching Michael. Yeah, Progress Rail painted HUs didn't hold up well at all. Enola Yard would usually wash the HUs when they came in for servicing or whatever. I might do a video about that.

I don’t know what the quality of epoxy primer is in the US but in Canada government edicts have robbed them of any real ability to resist rust/corrosion.The prices have not reflected this lower quality however,it’s grab every dollar we can for this inferior product.

Is there a reason why NS has the blue Sonic Bonnet and the yellow and red bonnet colors on their locos?
@Trains21
@Trains21 Жыл бұрын
Mostly the different colors represented different types of rebuilds. In the case of the AC44C6Ms 4000-4005, the colors represented the shops that rebuilt them. The red stripe was Roanoke, the blue stripe was Altoona and the gold stripe was Dansville, NY.

Another excellent video!! So let's say my old Jeep loco needs a new sprayed on corporate image (Heritage scheme) in the original company colors. So if I bring it in for a standard paint job (labor & materials) what can I expect to write the check for and we're out the door?? The material bill alone seems like it could be huge.

A.C.: Some railroads, in my opinion, don't keep the high-level look of their locomotive paint jobs up to snuff, which I absolutely don't understand. The exterior painted quality of the locomotive exterior is, indeed, the 'public face' of the railroad company. Two of the biggest offenders are Canadian Pacific and Canadian National. There are others, but these two, are top-tier 'A' level concerns.

I've heard that CP doesn't look after their engines which surprises me because most of the CP engines that I ever saw looked in at least "decent" shape. CN also surprises me because I've been in and on many of their locos and if nothing else, they have most of the bells and whistles.

Heh. Primer, color, and clear coats. Just like my HO locomotives. My acrylic color paint is about ($4/17 ml) x (3785.4 ml/gal) ~ $890/gal, but I don't need more than 17 ml per loco. 🙂 Cheers from Wisconsin!

I wonder, while other roads were deferring maintenance on track and rolling stock, the n&w must have been thinking... what's the cheapest paint scheme? The script herald scheme, too costly. The hamburger scheme, too costly. I know, lets get rattle cans of black whatever, as long as it sticks and we'll just use our reporting marks. Oh, and don't worry about doing it the same way on every loco either. that takes too much time. :)
