People are making snarky comments about the grass. Growth is seasonal guys. Look at the beef, they look in pretty good condition for the end of the dry season. Stop worrying about what is obviously not a problem on an operation you clearly know nothing about. Unless he deliberately separated out a bunch of other cows just to film a short video, that’s a very safe stocking density. The way you get grass to grow when it rains is to make sure you pasture cows on it when it doesn’t.
@bumponlog
@bumponlog Жыл бұрын
Grass growth is only "seasonal" in the sense that this field has likely not seen rain in weeks and thus the grass is being baked by the sun. Grass is a very water intensive plant. I do not understand farming in the mountainous west/southwest. It's seems like a fools errand and a conscience decision to make a hard profession even harder. The climate is arid and ill conducive to industrial crop production and/or cattle grazing. The western states are in historic drought conditions and likely will be for some years ahead. In contrast, much of what is East of the Rockies receives regular and consistent precipitation that sustains various agriculture operations without irrigation. But hey maybe there's something these mountain "ranchers" know that I don't. I suspect largely at play though is persons wanting to bizarely live their fantasy to play cowboy and live in a bygone era.

Volume. Make money or go bust. People don’t know just how many hobby farms are actually feeding into the system. 20-200 head is hobby level and that makes up the bulk of the production. We currently have 45 plus calves, (bad year only 36 calves including a bottle fed who probably will cost money instead of make money). We just bought 14 cows all of which were closed so we could keep all the girls for next season without shipping our bulls. Also had our big bull go lame and need about $600 in antibiotics because he kept busting out and opening himself back up. (Another $250 in vet because my mother-in-law works for him so just paid his drive time and expenses). We all have jobs, (I’m in town 4hrs away) and I work 60hrs per week and the rest work 30-70hrs each.

When the ranchers still don't make as much money as you think. Your feedlots in your processors are the ones that make the most. For a rancher breaks even he's happy. And that all depends on what mother nature throws at him for that whole year. That could be drought it could be bad feed that could be too much snow too much rain during calving season it could be a loss of calves it can be calves that are deformed or just different they don't get no money for them. And like one comment on here said start adding up all the totals of the cost of your feed, shots and sometimes vet bills.

Rustling is an actual problem still. Ranchers often have several fields, they can't keep eyes on all of them. It doesn't take long to pull up and snag a few and doesn't look out of place to folks passing by. Out in the sticks this is one of the reason neighbors still know each other. They rely on them for security. If someone they don't recognize is on their neighbors land, you better bet they will challenge them because they expect the same. I miss that.

No subsidies in the cattle biz. That is for grain farmers. We get drought assistance when our county, in our state hits D3 or higher on the weekly drought monitor. There is a gov't subsidized (partially) insurance available, but it seldom covers the premium.

Jacob, where is the subsidy taking place? It sounds specific to a region. Subsidy doesn't just mean government money. If you work in town to pay ranch bills, that's a subsidy. If your spouse works in town to pay ranch bills, same thing. There are some programs like CRP that are also a subsidy, but people generally ignore them.

My personal experience, In Texas T bone steak is $20 in California that same steak is only $12. usa Cattle farmers are sellouts. Most of their beef is sold overseas, and then the local economy buys cheap beef from Mexico that is way lower quality. I've tested meats in both states, California meats are way higher quality.

@chunkblaster
@chunkblaster Жыл бұрын
@@Ada-zn3pw im not gona shit on you because you probably don't understand what a feed lot is. Most beef cattle raised for consumption are raised on what are called "feed lots"- which are designed for maximum efficiency. The cows are packed together so densely that they waide knee deep in their own feces for the rest of their lives, being force fed as much as possible. The meat packing industry does not clean the urine & feces off the cow before slaughtering it & harvesting the meat. And that is precisely why we get multiple E. Coli outbreaks & food recalls in the US.
@slashboxcattleco.3369
@slashboxcattleco.3369 Жыл бұрын
@@chunkblaster not entirely all true, but I entirely agree that the best thing to do is to buy local food from people who raise food how you believe it should be. That's the real answer. As far as the feedlots, I agree it's a mess. But they do clean and pile the pens, at least responsible management does. Most animals are only in feedlots 90days or less on avg. As for processing with feces, the first thing done is kills. Then immediately, the hide is removed with all the feces and dirt attached to it.
@seanhazelwood3311

@@OliM9595Free range eats only grass, best possible living conditions, takes three years to reach slaughter weight. Feedlot feeds every possible food item a cow will eat, as much as possible (most feed is ok, some is ridiculous). Hormone implants cause them to gain more weight and faster. Slaughter weight at 18mos. Living conditions vary from ok to evil. The main problem is volume. Everyone wants fresh meat in the store at all times, regardless of location. Feedlots achieve this because free range animals simply can't keep up with demand.

The wife either is a teacher, nurse, or banker. The husband usually works a part time job on top of taking care of the farm. They barely live comfortably. Tell you what, let me go waste my time and there's and go interview them and I'll get back with you. Maybe it doesn't make sense to you, but to them it does? The area I'm from, most land owners live out of state, so local farmers lease the ground. The farmer gets the higher percentage. I worked for a guy when I was in highschool. His farm was 6,000 acres, he owned 4,000 the other 2,000 was leased or rented ground. I guess rich people want the ground but none of the work.
