How realistic is medieval Ireland in Crusader Kings 3?

Many new players of Crusader Kings start their history with the game on the small and remote island of Ireland, which has earned the kingdom the jesting name of "noob island". In this video, we are looking at how historically accurate Paradox portrayed medieval Ireland, and which of the characters and concepts in the game reflect Ireland's historical reality.

I was born in Derry City in the north and got a BA in Archaeology and Greek and Roman Civilization in UCD Dublin (even took a specific class on the High Kingship of Ireland) and I feel you did a fairly good job portraying the snapshot of Ireland and the political situation there in 1066. I am actually a descendant of Domnall Ua Lochlainn, who is depicted in the game as being the ruler of Oriel (not accurate of course as you explained). Unfortunately, the start date of 1066 was a really messy time for the Kingdom of Aileach (pronounced like the name Alec by the way). So it looks like they decided to try to simplify it a bit. An Áed Ua hUalgairg was King of Aileach in 1066 but he is gone only a year later, replaced by Domnall mac Néill (the Poor) in 1067 who himself was replaced in 1068 by another Áed, Áed mac Néill who lasted until 1083 when Domnall Ua Lochlainn, my ancestor, finally became King of Aileach (after a very brief stint by a guy named Donnchad mac Néill who didn't even last a year). The real king of Airgíalla (Oriel is the anglicized name so not accurate at this point) in 1066 was a certain Leathlobair Ua Laidhgnen. Don't know anything about him specifically. So I can forgive the game developers saying screw it. lol

With the Rite tenant added to Insular as well, it's now more focused on the idea that it's simply a slight deviation from Catholicism itself. They still recognize the Pope as their head of faith within the current game state, which brings certain advantages and disadvantages.

Just a heads up, the language spoken in Ireland isn’t typically called Gaelic, I think that’s more so for Scotland. Far as I’m aware it can be called gaelic, and is included in that group of languages, but typically is referred to by another name. Irelands language is called Irish in English, and Gaeilge in Irish. It’s closely related to Scottish Gaelic but it’s not the same. Your pronunciation for Irish words seemed pretty good to me overall though

I came here to say the same thing. It's a minor nitpick but the idea that the Irish language is called Gaelic has this odd ubiquity outside of Ireland. In Ireland it's extra confusing because we have Gaelic Football, and many people simply refer to Gaelic Football as just "Gaelic". The end result is that well intentioned foreigners often end up doing the equivalent of asking us if we speak soccer Edit: by the way I really enjoyed the video

I saw someone else had corrected the Gaelic bit and your pronunciations are generally very good for a non-speaker, but my one clarification would be that Irish people just call the state Ireland, it's only Brits that call it Republic of Ireland (which is a football team, not the proper name for the country!) Nice to see Ireland getting some attention. I've made a number of videos on Ireland in CK3 on my channel, including one on Murchad. I'd be interested to know what sources you have that say he ruled until 1068 as all the ones I've read say that Toirdelbach ruled Munster from 1063. Paradox copied the Munster Kings list from Wikipedia and Murchad was added to that as the result of a misreading of an Irish academic text. Toirdelbach was the ruler of Munster in the 1066 start in CK1 but later games took heavily from Wikipedia, for which I think they can be criticized. 6:56 You say you couldn't find any characters in Meath that reflected real historical figures. The guy on screen as you say that, Conchobar Ua Máelshechlainn, defeated Murchad (King of Dublin) in 1070 (which resulted in his death) and then killed his father, Diarmaid mac Máel na mBó (King of Leinster/High King) in 1072, after which Toirdelbach rose to the High Kingship. The guy who made the improved insular christianity mod also did one where Toirdelbach starts as King of Munster. If you haven't check out forvo (.) com, it has recordings of native speakers of various languages pronouncing words. Lots of Irish names and place names there.

If you do another breakdown like this, I highly suggest Armenia and the Caucasus as a whole, Paradox seems pretty confused when choosing rulers there. For example, in 867 they have the historical Bagrationi ruler of Tao-Klarjeti be the ruler of Kakheti for some reason, when in reality Kakheti was ruled by the independent Donauri dynasty. The guy they have ruling Tao-Klarjeti should actually be ruling in the principality of Daron/Taron, which doesn't even exist in-game!

You are mocking (a bit :) ) the comments about Insular Christianity, but one of the main historical critics is valid : in the 9th century (and pre Gregorian Reform catholicism in general) lot of places in Europe would have their own flavour of catholicism and are not in the game as a Faith, and Insular Christianity is in CK3 only because it is well known in an english speaking country.

Really good video, just want to say although our system was similar to feudalism, It was very different in many ways too, mainly in the structure of command as a chieftain didn’t have an heir, instead that heir would be voted upon by the entire family including everyone but the lower class, slaves and serfs. The chief also held less power than for example an English feudal lord as there was a council between the upper class of the clan called a „derbfine“ which could often overrule the decision of a chief.

I adored my time with the Petty Kingdom of Munster which I turned into the Kingdom of Ireland...my greatest achievements was adopting to Catholicism and participating in the crusades, I basically carried the team and installed my benefactor, my brother as King of Jerusalem. Shortly after I had a somewhat unsuccessful conquest of Iberia(tried to revived the celtiberians) and eventually installed my sister as Queen of Galicia. Then my character died, meaning Jerusalem's and Galicia split of from Ireland as per inheritance laws, and my new character had a bad relationship towards his uncle and aunt. And finally, as a noob I thought I could conquer England with the help of my ally, my brother in law, the holy roman emperor, but refused to join, so I quit...tried coming back to that save after the Royal Court update released, but it's corrupted...Regardless and TLDR, there will always be a spot in my heart for Ireland in CK3, regardless of slander.

I want to let you know that Paradox has modified Insular Christianity in the “Fate of Iberia” as part of the free patch. The new Rite tenant allows a faith to have the Catholic Pope as their head of faith while having different doctrines. It does give the Catholic Pope a -10 opinion of characters of faiths with Rite. Mozarabic Christianity which was the focus of the DLC was given a unique decision to either bind to Rome or break with Rome. I have not played as Irish since the update so I don’t know if they have a similar decision, but I hope they do. I would also like to see your opinion on Irish Culture as represented in the free update that accompanied the Royal Court DLC. As Ireland is a small part of my family history I am always curious to learn more.

Very nice video! Part of my love of CK3 is because it fuels my love of medieval history, so dives into what aspects of the game are historical vs. strictly mechanical are always welcome in my book. RE: the subject of "Insular" Christianity in the game, it's worth noting that the devs have stated they aren't fully satisfied with current religious mechanics in CK3. There have already been some changes (perhaps most notably in the form of allowing multiple faiths to share a single spiritual head, so as to more accurately portray the Islamic world), and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a future religion-focused update that includes making the dynamic between the two Catholicisms a bit more nuanced.

@AtomicArtumas

I think the funniest thing here is that CK3 finally actually made Ireland not the best place to start for a new player.... and then immediately reversed that with it's first major DLC by making the kingdom of mann just stupidly OP. Sure, you either need a custom ruler or to "start" somewhere else, but most norse factions can extremely easily just pop a varangian adventure and go move to Ireland. And a lot of the smaller norse factions start in nearly the same exact situation as most of the Irish leaders, especially places like Iceland, etc. At launch, everyone was actually super excited for the fact that you were generally better off starting off somewhere like Italy as a vassal of the HRE, but then they just had to go and give the british isles not just the single most overpowered decision in the game, but also a second major decision that gives you a huge de jure empire that you can VERY easily jump into from the first decision. And now we're just straight back to "yeah, just start in ireland lul".

Similar to Murchad, when I was looking into Welsh history I found the first prince of Wales is alive at the start of the game, but unlanded and comes to power with foreign help not long (15 years) after the game start. I would like to play as the real first prince of wales but it's not normally available.

I started as a tiny county in Africa. Realm devide scared me half to death, but after the third time it happened, I finally figured out what was happening, but had no idea how to stop it. After killing serveral generations worth of siblings and vassals to keep my domain, I was finally removed from power shortly after I establised the Empire Of Guinea. What brought me down, you ask? War? Rebellion? No. I just didn't know what matrilineal marraige meant. So my son was not from my dynasty.

I don't understand why paradox didn't include a start date for Brian Boru given Ireland is their recommend starting nation. Brians story is exactly what most ck3 play is rags to riches but more importantly historically significant especially in viking age
@historyinbits
@historyinbits Жыл бұрын
I always thought they aligned the later starting date with an interesting period within Iberian history, since the start of the Reconquista is also a focus in the game. I agree that Brian Boru would be an amazing story to play through though!!

In 1066, I started out with Petty King Murchad of Munster, and eventually unified the High Kingdom of Ireland. Now, it is 1390, the Briain dynasty unified Britannia after the conquests of Scotland, Wales, and England. Under the watchful eyes of the Irish Emperors, the realm claims land from the frosty volcanic wastes of Iceland, to the barren deserts of Egypt and the Holy Land. The Irish persisted, even as the Mongols waited across the English Channel whilst they pillaged Europe for all it was worth, and eventually disintegrated. House Briain has endured wars, infighting, foreign invasions, uprisings, plagues, and even put all of Christendom's holy sites under it's watch to mend the Schisms and evangelize the Levant and Egypt to the one true faith, doing what numerous crusades could not and establishing its glory across the world. Emperor Donnúcan 'The Justicar' has nearly 70,000 troops to his name and was last seen, at the age of 51, leading his armies in carving out a kingdom in Jerusalem for his kinsmen to rule and convert. Not bad for the tutorial start.

Ireland seems fine from what you've said. Anatolia is honestly one of the biggest historical inaccuracies in terms of culture, in the game. There's just a sea of Greek rather than it being separated into Greek which occupies mainland Greece and the coasts, Cappadocian which occupies the middle of Anatolia and is a hybrid culture, Pontic which occupies areas of the Black sea coast of Anatolia and is a hybrid culture between Greek and Persian and lastly Italiot which exists mainly in southern Italy and Sicily. It's weird that Paradox chose to split every other previously monolithic culture other than Greek.

Never played in ireland in ck3. Would be a fun multiplayer challenge for everyone to be a different irish lord and try to unite ireland under ones own rule. Also idk if its just me but i think that another good ”noob” start for ck3 is as a duke in the hre since theres alot of opportunities naturally progress and become the ruler of the hre and expand your empire. Also the elections are quite fun for me to manipulate the results of in my favor

one of my first ck (2) gameplays was as Laughlin, i turned it into an empire spanning across all of Britain and a huge chunk of france before the sunset invasion landed on ireland itself. i was tempted to quit st that point but i pushed through. what i did was come under the wing of the aztec empire and essentially destroy it from the inside out. safe to say i pushed them back to the spanish peninsula where they remained to this day

It's a great island to start out on to learn how combat and wars work, and has many choices for growth. Most of the terrain being marshlands stinks for development, but if you have royal courts there are culture core values that can negate some of it. Regardless great video.

Eh, I think the only funky thing about Insular Christianity is that it often spreads and becomes popular elsewhere, and it's SUPER bizarre seeing an "insular" religion go mainstream in Continental Europe.

Ireland is a tutorial island. I played it after I started to play as Litovoi the count of Succeava and vassal of Izaislav Rurkid. My neighboring pechengs were looting me in 1.0 and Izaislav was in mass revolution. Eventually I defeated them even with 3 sinful personalities. And took land in moldova. Then I died and game over cause my son was of Rurkid dinasty. I restarted it several times and one time I managed to create duchy of bukovina and help my liege play wars and profit from them. And lastly I revolted in another playthroug and made Kingdom of Moldova. It was a better way of learning than being in an island and play 50 years then afk 400.
