I think because he was so young when they met that he was just a kid and didn't try to hit on her or ogle her the way most men do. I believe she dislikes/distrusts men because usually all they care about is her looks. I think she's comfortable with Johnny because he was just a boy when they met so in her eyes he still kinda is. I also think maybe cultural differences may have something to do with it. Johnny grew up in the US where the gap between genders is less pronounced (especially in kids) like to kids it's not about have 'girl' friends or 'boy' friends, its just friends and often friend groups are a mix of gender. Meanwhile I've noticed that in korea the gap seems a lot bigger. I've noticed that a lot of idols don't really know how to interact with the opposite sex. And sure part of that may be because of the cameras but I think it's more than that. I think when males and females become close it's just kind of expected that they will date instead of just be friends. I mean I feel like I can count on one hand the (korean born and raised) idols who seem comfortable being friends with the opposite sex... Now I'm not saying Americans are always comfortable around the opposite sex but I feel like someone being really awkward around the opposite sex is the exception not the rule, where in South Korea it seems the other way around... So I think that because Johnny grew up in the US he's more comfortable and used to treating girls/women like just people instead of treating them like a 'woman' and I think Irene appreciates that about him... idk if that makes sense I'm not trying to be racist or stereotyping or anything but this just seemed this way to me... Aside from Johnny’s overall amazing personality and how good of a person he is, I see Irene as someone very intuitive. Maybe she was born like that, maybe she became like that in order to guard herself but I feel like she senses when people (men, in that sense) have ill intentions towards her. I mean, they see a beautiful woman and suddenly forget that in front of them is a human being first, before her gender and appearance come into play. Whereas Johnny is someone really accepting and he seems to see the good in everyone, he’s pretty much someone that knows how to make people comfortable and it comes to him easy. I guess that’s one of his gifts because not many people can do that. And again, he’s like that not only with Irene but with his members and other people he’s worked with. He seems light-hearted sometimes yet is actually extremely wise and compromising. Very respectful and not aggressive in any sense. His whole aura is just very comforting and warm. On top of that, he’s exactly what men fail to be when it comes to Irene. Whether it’s other celebrities on reality shows or even the hosts (I won’t even mention celebrities we don’t know about behind the scenes), they all seem very shallow and use superficial flattery to get to her which never works. They see her for her looks only and don’t try to look beneath while at the same time shooting their shot, incredibly shameless at that. We don’t know the full extent to their relationship but I feel like that’s why Irene is really fond of Johnny. He’s never treated her like a potential partner or someone he finds super beautiful. He simply treats her as a person and a friend (including the hierarchy there of course). They’ve know each other for a long time as a bonus so she must’ve got comfortable around him a while ago.
