The RGW 90, also known as the MATADOR, is a unique, state-of-the-art rocket launcher, collaboratively designed by Germany, Israel, and Singapore, to address a multitude of battlefield threats. The "RGW" in the weapon's designation represents "Recoilless Grenade Weapon". The acronym MATADOR stands for "Man-portable Anti-Tank, Anti-DOoR", aptly describing its dual-purpose design and showcasing its versatile operational capabilities.
This weapon is affectionately known as the "Nut Cracker" within the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) who first used it in combat during Operation Cast Lead in 2009. The weapon lived up to its promises, effectively clearing or breaching any fortified structures the IDF confronted.
Notably, it plays a significant role in arming the Ukrainian Armed Forces and volunteer units. The MATADOR's tactical importance was underlined in the battles for Mariupol, where its impact on the field was noticeably felt.
The MATADOR distinguishes itself by its lightweight design. Its warhead is notably effective against both armored vehicles and robust structures like brick walls. The launcher measures about 3.3 feet (1 meter) long and weighs around 24.9 pounds (11.3 kg) when equipped with a Laser Range Finder (LRF) and reflex sight. It can effectively hit targets up to 0.31 miles (500 meters) away.

NLAWs and Javelins get the majority of attention by people. But I’ve seen hundreds of combat footage from Ukrainians who have used MATADORS and the classic RPG-7s more often. Too often only certain weapons are celebrated by the media and casual onlookers… HIMARS, NLAWs, Javelins, Stringers, etc. But if you pay attention, other systems are more widely used and equally efficient. Such as… RPG-7s, Ukrainian made Stugna-Ps, M270 MLRS, etc.

There’s a bunch of different RGW90 versions, what Ukraine got was RGW90 HH (HEAT/HESH) which is used against armored vehicles etc. There’s also an anti-structure version RGW90 ASM which is used against enemies behind walls or to create holes in walls for entry. RGW90 LRMP (long range multipurpose) is used against infantry or unarmored vehicles, apart from a direct fire mode it can also be used in an air burst mode at up to a range of 1200 meters. It has a fragmentation warhead with tungsten balls. There’s also an illumination version and a smoke version. In the final stages of development is a RGW90 HH-T version which has a tandem HEAT warhead and is thus more useful against enemy main battle tanks with ERA.

Why do all of the animations show a flame coming out of the back upon firing, when literally the entire point of the RGW is that there is no flame out the back, because the hot gasses are trapped in the sealed internal chamber?

I didn't know that this anti-tank weapon was being used by the Ukraine military because Israel wasn't wanting to send them any weapons.

Germany sent them not Israel. But probably they had to ask Singapore and Israel before they were sent.

Matadors were developed by Germany, Israel and Singapore. So, Germany doesn’t need Israeli permission. Unlike, nations with F-16s need US approval to donate. Now, the Israeli Spike ATGM was solely developed by Israel and that’s why Ukraine doesn’t have any. Why donated Swedish CV90 IFVs doesn’t have Spike ATGMs.
