With the recent controversy surrounding Adult Swim animator Justin Roiland, the internet has largely turned against Rick and Morty. But I argue that Rick and Morty hasn't gotten worse, and that it still deserves to be Adult Swim's number one show.

After actually watching all of it: Yeah, the fact that Rick still has feeling and is contradicting himself in an itended way is obvious, sometimes even part of the plot of episodes. Example: In one of them Rick and Morty go to some space Spa to get their "toxic" trades removed, which then basically become their own beings. Toxic Rick cared a ton about Toxic Morty, showing Rick actually does care, but just considers it bad.
@kobragaming9420
@kobragaming9420 Жыл бұрын
The fact that he considers caring as toxic even further emphasises the toxicity of ricks character to the point that he sees all types of vulnerability as a weakness that he’d rather have expunged from his character because his nihilistic views on reality eliminate a healthy view of attachment. To him the world is so arbitrary and pointless emotions are utterly useless yet he can’t help but feel them which probably feeds into the reason why he hates himself so much. He has a cemented view in reality and strength and he can’t even be the person he wants to be despite believing it a better to be unfeeling and uncaring

I’d say the main point of the series (at least in the first two seasons) is summarized by the quote “nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody is gonna die, come watch tv”
@JG_Wentworth

@@FREEZETODEATH Why shouldn't we talk about the most integral parts of the show? Roiland is literally a co-creator and the reason the show exists, being an ostrich and burying your head in the ground to ignore the parts of it directly resulting from his involvement and the negative connotations that can be discussed there doesn't prevent them from having an impact. You just wanna ignore all the incest plotlines and not acknowledge them at all while watching a video deconstructing the entire message of the show? Why would you *_not_* want that discussed?

I’d love for in Season 7 we could get Rick Prime vs Evil Morty - The ultimate battle between the Rick that our Rick thinks he is, and the Morty that has relieved himself of Rick. Both capable of great genius and the two fighting would be absolutely insane, obliterating universes in the cross fire. Leaving our Rick and Morty to watch the whole thing go down and see the absolute extreme versions of themselves. It could be good character development for the two of them.

I think I'd save that for season 10. Really build up Rick Prime like they did for Evil Morty before going for the final confrontation. I think it'd be really dope if we had seasons 1-5 be the Evil Morty saga, while 6-10 covers the Rick Prime arc. Just as a way to show we've entered a new era for the series.
@Tyler_W

That’s probably where they’re going. I think the ultimate plot twist would be evil morty returning, Rick Prime is like “oh wow, finally, a morty that isn’t completely worthless” but evil morty hates Ricks that much, he kills him. So if Morty’s original universe is also Rick Prime’s, morty is technically “his morty”. So what happened to our rick’s morty? Technically, he never had one-or so we think. Rick prime is a monster. I would 100% believe that he could and would PRETEND to kill them in a simulation, leading our Rick to believe them dead. While instead, Rick Prime kept them prisoner, took Jerry prisoner. Why? Because our Rick was the only rick who refused to leave them. Meaning, there must have been something different in this ONE universe, this ONE special case- it might be the reason why all of the other Morty’s disappoint him. So he keeps them prisoner, splices their DNA over and over to create the “Ultimate Morty”. However, this means this poor morty is subject to years and years of torture, being torn apart and put back together, seeing his parents suffer if he doesn’t comply, etc. Rick prime succeeds in creating a morty with intelligence, cunning, and control that rivals his own: this is the birth of Evil Morty. They’re evil together for a minute, and we get a montage of them going on “adventures” like our own protagonists. Except, instead of being morally grey, Rick Prime does things like blow up planets of intelligent life because someone pissed him off and he needs to “relieve some tension”. In all these situations where Morty could die, but Rick saves him? Rick Prime treats Evil Morty the way our Rick pretended to: he leaves him to die, he doesn’t go back for him, doesn’t give him the bracelet etc. And Evil Morty, being engineered to be as intelligent as Rick Prime, finally has enough: he steals Rick Prime’s portal gun and runs away. Traveling the different realities, Morty realizes that in every single one, he is subservient to Rick. He vows to infiltrate and overthrow the citadel so that finally, he can escape the hell that he was born into, a fate tied to Rick’s forever.

Man, when you pointed out how Rick Prime's theme is similar to Rick's theme, it reminded me of one of my favorite indie games which also has a phenomenal soundtrack: Celeste. The game's composer, Lena Raine, used a similar technique, in which she slowed down the antagonist's theme, and used a different instrument. I always find it cool when media does this. Side note: I'd recommend this game. It recently had it's fifth anniversary, and is a very solid platforming adventure.

I disagree with the implication that the show has definitively improved over time, quite the opposite for a multitude of reasons, but that doesn't prevent the show from maintaining some semblance of good writing. The downfall of it came from the overabundance of writers, things got too murky and the copious amounts of incest plotlines disguised as "jokes" just cements that for me.

I only recently got into the series, my wife and I had checked it out early on but didn't care for the pilot at all and so moved on, but a couple months ago I was looking for something to watch so gave it a second chance. I still didn't care for the early seasons, but there were a few stand out episodes here and there among all the annoying gross out humor, and a lot of creativity that I appreciated, so I plowed through and over time I found the show slowly seemed to get better and better until by the time I was fully caught up, I was huge fan. It had started like a weak show, but evolved into something actually extremely creative, thoughtful, and most importantly, enjoyable to watch. It also seemed to just get better with each passing season. Not every episode was a winning, but far more were then in the early seasons. Now fully excited about this world I went online to talk about it with others only to find EVERY single person I interacted with all seemed to think the show had gotten WORSE as it went on. I was dumb founded. I'm still kind of dumb founded. The early seasons, while again, having a few stand out episodes or moments sprinkled here and there, were frankly pretty unpleasant. The most recent seasons were so unbelievably creative, unique, and, to me at least, actually funny. I really was caught off guard by the fan sentiment. All of which is to say, really appreciate this video exists to affirm I'm not losing my mind at the old ripe age of 39, and that I'm not the only one who not only doesn't hate the most recent seasons, but actually thought it's gotten better.

Trust me, not crazy at all. I agree with you! It could be the fact people are louder about their distain or dislike for something, but yes I do think the more popular opinion amongst fans is that it has "gotten worse." It could be that those people fell in love with what, for example, the first episode is. And that's the big argument, is that the first season is simple, and the further seasons are "so convoluted." But I don't really care about all that. I love the shows creativity, and story all in one big package. It's just really unique.

I stand with you that the newer seasons are actually better. I always thought the "message" was that Rick tries to pretend nothing matters, but obviously his family (even Jerry) matter to him. @NerdMiGerd I think the show was at its most consistent in its first 3 seasons, and the latest 3 seasons both have some of the show's highest highs and the lowest lows. With that said, I think season 6 didn't really have any of the lows of 4 and 5, so althoigh I like most of every season, I think 6 shows an overall uptick in quality. Personally, though, I was never someone who thought the show was "perfection." I think the long gaps between the first three seasons artificially raised hype and lead some people to overstate how good it actually was. I do think the show is mostly really good and one of the best animated series of the last decade for sure, but with the exception of season 2, every season has at least one episode I don't care for. The rest is half really good, and the other half genuinely great. I've always thought that they have a pretty steady hit to miss ratio.

@@Tyler_W Yeah I'd agree. Also fans do honestly expect wayyyy too much about this show, when it's always been known for playing things fast and loose. At about 19:25 you mention Rick picks realities where his family exists, in season 5's finale Evil Morty brings up the "central finite curve." Which is where Rick(s) have made "infinite dimensions" where he exists and is the "smartest in the universe", and have infinite dimensions to get a Morty for any Rick if they need one. I just wanted to put this out there, as to show Rick C-137 picks a reality where he can easily fit right in, it's not very difficult to find one with variations he desires. Not to discredit what you said, but I just wanted to bring that fact up, good video though.

If there are infinite versions of you… doesn’t that make YOU, the one you wound up being, infinitely more “special” by design? Think about it like this. Out of all the versions of me out there in this theoretical multiverse, I’m ME. Maybe there’s another one just like me with something slightly different about her. Maybe there’s one who’s an asshole, maybe there’s one who changed the world, maybe there’s one that got that Tama Grandstar kit she wanted instead of having to get the PDP Doubledrive that I’ve fallen in love with. Like… out of those infinite ways my life could have played it, I’m currently experiencing THIS VERSION. And it’s likely the only version I’ll ever know. And that’s what makes it special to me. I have a lifetime, however long or short that might be, to experience those endless possibilities. That’s beautiful to me. That makes me want to see what’s around the bend, good or bad. At least I’m LIVING. At least I EXIST. I defied the odds to exist. And I’m gonna run with it for as long as possible.

Season 3 started to undo any and all character development, so the creators didn't have to bother with a story and could go back to episodic story telling and just write one of the main threats out of the show. Season 4 got worse, with Rick having random overpowered abilities that would come and go as the writers please to solve the problem of the day. I am too tired to do things for myself, too tired to care, and it is reinforced by my thinking that nothing I do will matter in the grand scheme of things. 16:56 I think it was intentional (self taught and cant read music but I happen to have an absolute ear. I cant tell you the name of the note, but I can find it in my instrument in its precise octave just by hearing.) Maybe I didnt do some of my homework but its been more than half a life into composition, harmonization and trying to think out of the box, sometimes my "head" composes something I cant play and try to bring it to reality and slowly with a metronome until you reach the cloudy idea you have floating in your head and the rainmap it leaves in your cortex ground dirt the rain it left in its path) So anyway TLDR they both seem lines that compliment, harmonize, and really has a relation that you could see in between two guitars or a mid/treble instrument with a "bass" one. So I think the musician that composed it looked at it like "Ok , this will be a second line of the series theme really slowed down in a manner that fits both the situation (A thing more "easy" to do if you part of a founding working line and slow it down to more than half the initial speed, so it already (not always) sounds more big or serious) and then from there compose a little darker theme varying some notes, but you already have the cadency. But when both sound together, this part doesnt seem to be that ominous, and makes like a second harmony for the "original" song and makes it sound, for me, like more complete. Like if they really went into "ok lets meme this into reality" and played the absolute rick tune with the original song of the sound, playing the absolute rick up to the tempo of the original show song, theoriginal one wpuld pop out mpre with the harmonizations that I think it may result. Its like they made a drum&bass move in the show song slowed down and they are thought to be compatible if you play them side by side at the same tempo.

Ive always thought the point was rick wants so badly for everything to not matter but the truth is it all does, no matter how bad he wants it. he wants no one to have control over him like rick prime did so he says nothing matters no person could destroy his world if he doesnt care but he does.

I haven't seen much blow back from the Justin situation, if anything I've seen a surprisingly large swell of love for the show and a desire for a replacement voice actor, the network and show creators seems to be aware of the public sentiment and are flowing it. Most of the people I see complaining about he show have been complaining for awhile now and from their partially coherent ramblings I mostly gather that they are angry Rick isn't as much of a toxic edge lord as he use to be. Harmon also treats his universe like its a character and it views mirror toxic Rick's view which is why even the wind would torment Jerry, but things have changed now and honestly, I'm glad.

What episode is it where the clock doesn’t show 2:00?
@4shame
@4shame Жыл бұрын
Anatomy Park is the only episode in which the clock turns to 3, although it changes back to 2 at the end. Most clocks in the show are always at 2, and pretty much the only instance where time progresses is in dreams or alternate realities (Like virtual worlds in the show). Funny enough, Mr. Goldenfold says in the pilot "Most of you won't live to see 3 o'clock". And he was right, most of the cast dies before the first season is even over lol

I don't believe that Rick C-137 killing Prime Rick would make him "what he hates the most" because in order to properly say that, Rick C-137 would have to pick an alternate Rick's family to kill if they don't listen to him about the interdimensional portal shit. Do you really think that he has the emotional capability to even do that, to kill his own wife and daughter? After watching the video, I can see that you understand he does have attachments. I think his attachment to his wife and daughter would prevent him from carrying that through. I think the Whirly Dirly episode proved that, cuz he hates/hated Jerry at that time and he didn't let him die. He says it's for Beth but we know that he could grab a Jerry from another time line.

Be warned though, Made In Abyss doesn't hold anything back, it can turn upside down in an instant, it shows how humanity be. Greedy, brutal, loving, beautiful, courious, adventurous, and sadness. But really is a show that is very underrated.

Honestly: really, really can't agree that the writers were planning all of it and were just misdirecting. They clearly had no plan and no overarching story over the seasons. But I also can't really talk about newer seasons since I kinda got bored of the entire show once Rick basically became an immortal god that basically had a solution for everything fir exactly that one episode and then never again

Ngl, I don't like this show. It's humor doesn't land with me, the nihilist shell Rick puts up grated on me, so on, and so forth, but I still see some clips every so often and I agree, it is getting better! Even I can admit that it's got some good stuff sometimes and that it was well-written. Enjoyed the vid! Keep up the good work!

The message (as it relates to this video and rick and morty as a whole) seems to be that cognitive dissonance is inherent to the human condition. It is also the eternal and internal conflict of humanity. We strive to eradicate such dissonance, but can only do so through honest analysis... the human psyche, tho, stands in the way. Pride prevents us and Rick alike from being open and honest w ourselves until dire circumstances or inebriation break that wall. Maybe less cognitive dissonance than a need for reckoning between emotion and thought, though.

Love all the points you made, completely agree. I'm sad that so many people have turned away from this brilliant show, because regardless of if you like or hate the crass humor the show is enveloped in, the characters, conflicts and underlying themes of the show are amazingly crafted. So many awesome stories were made by shitty people, it doesn't mean the creation is shitty and should be shunned as well, especially when Rick and Morty has been made by teams of multiple writers and artists. Justin was just the face, the show pony and truthfully Rick and Morty will benefit greatly from his removal.

The best part about this show is everyone thinks Rick is so smart. He is a real cartoon character with fake super intelligence. The show itself is inherently stupid and makes no sense. He actively let's you know it's all a jokey science show.

19:55 So do many ricks on the council of ricks so your point is mute. Great video, some of your analysis is brilliant but others is putting more thought into the show than the creators. And stuff like saying the show has no overarching villain as "pulling a fast one" seems out of touch and i have not seen a single person ditch the show because of roiland. Then again, there are some comments below saying they never thought about an overarching plot. But most of the fanbase has.

I've watched R&M from the beginning and frankly the first 2 seasons were super mediocre imo and got far better in later seasons. they cut back on the protracted diatribes against characters that are likely just projections of people the creators didn't have the balls to tell off in real life, and fewer long rants of cheap edgy Reddit brand nihilism

The show is literally built on disparate parts. The show is designed as an eb and flow between improv and heavily scripted, action cartoon and family sitcom, fast-and-loose storytelling and deeply plotted story arcs. It's what made the show so appealing for me, and gives it its unique identity, the fact that it is at its core living and extremely contradictory existence.
