Staedtler was founded in 1835 and is one of the largest stationery companies in the world. It has more than 2,300 employees and is present in around 26 countries, including Brazil.
Let's get to know the raw materials that are used: plastic, limestone, gelling agent, pumice, white and blue pigment.
The final product is an eraser with a white tip and a blue tip. The white side erases graphite pencil writing. The blue part erases scribbles made with the ballpoint pen.
There is a recipe for formulating the blue part. To erase the ballpoint pen ink, this side should be rougher. The blue color has only the function of differentiating from white.
These components must be well mixed, and for this a whisk is used.
The mixture is then loaded into a hopper into the extruder. The extruder presses into the barrel.
The blue and white liquid rubber is poured into the machine.
But how do they come together? Inside the extruder, the liquid rubber forms a thick paste that is carefully heated. This heating causes the paste to become gelatinous and, passing through the matrix, its shape becomes rectangular. The white side must be joined with the blue side at the right time. If they are too stiff, the sides will not stick together. If they are too soft, the colors will blend together.
So one of the most important variables is the correct temperature. And it is one of the great secrets of the industry.
Any change in it, the rubber will be defective.
On the matrix, the factory prints its logo.
The product is still hot at this stage, so water is used for its cooling.
Powerful fans blow water from the rubber.
Pneumatic cutting equipment cuts the rubber to the correct size. Its blades must be changed every 4 hours so that the cut is always accurate.
Leaving for the end, they are transported by conveyor belt to be covered.
This machine alone produces around 100 kilos of rubber per hour. That's about 100,000 pieces a day.
