kinda surprised that you guys didn't think of that. When I first saw the grass I instantly thought it would grow way to fast and tall in that green house. Maybe you should not have covered the whole enclosures with grass and leave some parts with soil.

You should find the vigour of the grass reduces overtime as it depletes the nutrition of the soil. I would add in a thick mulch bark, creating pathways and mounds for the tortoises. This will suppress the amount of grass (by preventing light from getting to the seedlings) whilst also providing exercise facilities for the tortoises. Keep up the good work.

Robo lawn mowers are killers for small essential bottom dwellers, and I don't mean tortoises. Maybe guinea pigs is an idea? They do not dig, are social, and eat a lot of grass. I have six ladies who keep my garden 'short'. Awesome enclosures!

Wait so Ryan is it good for the turtles to have long grass or no .. reason I’m asking because you said the turtle was eating tons of grass it was sticking out of its mouth but you guys were talking about mowing the lawn .. so I was wondering what’s the ideal way to keep the grass for the turtles awesome video I learned a lot just have that one question thanks
@PrimitivePredators
@PrimitivePredators 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no lol so all the grass is good for the tortoises to eat but when it’s too long they tend not to ya the whole enclosure because it’s hard for them to see over the grass.

Do tortoises do well with clover? Look into cover crops, they're low growing plants that farmers will sow after their money crop grows to a certain height, it inhibits unwanted weed growth. That may be your ticket

Black mountains are forest species and would rarely eat fibrous grasses. Too much grass, too little forest coversge and leaf litter. Redfoots are about half forested and half grassland...but the dont go far into the grasslands secondary to predators. Nice facility but time to recreate their natural habitat. Not sure how you get differental humidity levels with changing substrate and localized air movement.

I thought plants grow quicker in a greenhouse as that’s what they were invented for so you could put rabbits in there and maybe produce your own croc food

Doubt the robotic lawnmowers Will work in those enclosures. You need cables under your grass which the tortoises Will probably destroy and you need a home station and a lawnmower for every enclosure. You cant Just put Them down and let them mow the grass. If you don't want to mow it your self i would get sheep or other animals to do it

@@GAA-dh7pd that wouldnt solve much, because you still need the cables for the lawnmower to find his way. But the grass is also too long to be mowed with a robotic lawnmower.

Should have about one third to half of the enclosure a combination of sand and gravel since most of the species are desert animals . Then they will be able to keep up with the grass and have more accurate natural habitats .
