I'm a girl and DragonBall z got me into anime. It was on before another show and I use to try to avoid it because I thought it was just a boy show (how different were the times) but I had nothing to one day but wait for the other show to come on so I gave in and watched it..... That choice resulted in not only a newfound love of a genre but friendships and a community I'm glad to be a part of even though these somewhat taxing times. What I've always liked about Anime is that it's never been the kind of genre to skimp over the gritty. It uses its style to utilize a form of story telling live action and cg can't ever fully do on their own (not to discredit those in anyway as they have their own perks). Anime captures the eye and attention, I won't lie and say every show out there is a masterpiece that deserves the upmost respect but damn if there aren't more than just "some" good ones.

Sailor Moon was awesome for another reason: She was always super relatable! She was clumsy, over ate, was late, didn't do great in school but she always had time for her friends. She would make sure if someone was upset or hurt, to comfort them and not dismiss their feelings. She didn't have amazing offensive powers like her friends (fire, lightning, etc) but she had heart and conviction.

Like Dragonball wasn't but it was a more powerful drug it left a lot of my close familiars a huge tumor in their brain and felt biasness toward Son Goku.....and I facepalmed myself.....BADLY.......NUMEROUS OF TIMES......EVERY DAY........WITH HIGH INTENSITY. Unlike the immature little kiddos, I chose the mahou shoujo path with Sailor Moon on the line and made me become an overly romantic saliva machine and later on got to love being the hero of these girls like Tuxedo Mask. (Good old roleplay times with pre-schooler girls) Sure, nowadays I'm a burnt out TF2 Sniper, but somewhere deep down in my heart I wish every girl would behave like anime girls because that is real woman-like quality and every mens dream unlike real life girls who are commonly hysterical, gold diggers or trashtalkers with fat and lazy lifestyle. Yep, that's how a man feels with full of disappointment of faulty image and expectation of the girls compare to reality.

I didn't like Sailor Moon as a kid, because Serena was an idiot, Amy was a bore, and the rest of their friends had annoying voices. Also, I was born in 94, so Sailor Moon was already starting to release reruns out of order, which was another annoyance. I liked One Piece, for a while, owned the Digimon Movie on VHS, and honestly couldn't get into DBZ at all. Between the ages of 12 and 13, I nearly went cold turkey on anime completely. But then, during the summer when I was 13, I learned that you could watch One Piece online, without the dumb voices and fake guns. The only problem? It was in Japan and you had to _read._ *I **_loved_** reading.* And searching for the Subbed version of One Piece ended up with me discovering Ranma 1/2. And me wanting more after finishing all of the Ranma episodes on that site led me to stumbling across a story called "Sailor Ranko." My very first fanfiction was a Ranma/Sailor Moon crossover. And that is where I learned the names Usagi, Minako, Makoto, Ami, and Rei. Sadly, it took me until 2009 and tripping over a forum thread called "IWIW Sailor Moon" by Shadowjack before I actually went back and fell in love with the OG anime, and I found those posts because my fanfiction journey had led me to a Sailor Moon/Dungeon Keeper crossover that I was reading called Dungeon Keeper Ami, and the site I usually read it on was down for maintenance. So yeah, my history with Sailor Moon is _very_ different from everyone else, lmao.

Sailor Moon was the first cartoon I ever saw that had a story arc that spanned individual episodes - that even with the very formulaic plot within an individual episode, each episode is a part of a larger story. It was the first cartoon I ever saw that had relatable characters - the sailors have hobbies, interests, phobias, quirks, etc. Sailor Moon is a crybaby, klutz, and procrastinator, Mercury is an introvert, Jupiter is a chef, Venus dreams of stardom, etc. They go to school. They worry about tests and going to school and sibling rivalries and finding love and being accepted. These characters have relatable flaws. In many ways, the success of Sailor Moon is similar to the success of Spider-Man (and many other Marvel comics vs. their DC counterparts) - people might long to be Batman, who is both a hero and multi-billionaire, or long to be Superman, who is a demigod in spandex, but they identify with Peter Parker struggling to do the right thing and still pay rent every month. The other unique thing that Sailor Moon brought to the table was a feminine approach to confronting her enemies. So many heroes solve problems by punching things (e.g. most comic book heroes). The problem is that most of the super heroines approach things the same as their male counterparts - punch and punch and punch. From a few steps back, Superman and Wonder Woman are incredibly similar in their "problem solving techniques". There is, of course, a time and a place for punching things - this is why we have armed forces and police officers - but this is a traditionally a very masculine way of solving problems. Sailor Moon would rather see her enemies be redeemed than be destroyed, she would rather talk than fight. Most of the big fights are more contests of will and determination (or unity and friendship) than brute force. Especially with Ail+Ann, the Dark Moon family, Amazon Trio/Quartet, Nehelenia, and Galaxia - the fight is won through empathy and pity - which is traditionally a much more feminine approach to problem solving.
@schwarzeseis4031

"which is traditionally a much more feminine approach to problem solving." And by common sense, I daresay, a much more reasonable approach...just looking at my own work, about 25% of the troubles arising can be solved by a display of power and/or intimidation. The other 75% need a more subtile approach.

Let’s also not forget that the Kindness of the Characters would be repaid when/if they decided to help out the Lower Ranked Villains who never had such kindness expressed to them. Such as the case when Usage/Serena nearly died when her inner Mirror shattered! And the Villains were going to be killed by Their ruthless master who decided to replace them! So knowing that the end was near, they used the last of their powers to revive her, knowing she was the only one that could stop them.

Naoko Takeuch literally woke up one morning and said, "I wanna make history!" Then in 1991, Sailor Moon stepped onto the scene and said, "I AM THE STANDARD!"
@Wrekkshoppe
@Wrekkshoppe Жыл бұрын
Actually, Naoko Takeuchi did very little when it came to shaping Sailor Moon. She's not a particular good writer, she merely came up with the general concept of Sailor Moon as a story. Most of the memorable identity and what we love about Sailor Moon (identical designed Sailor fuku uniformls, was suggested to her by her editor, Osa-P. He's like the Bill Finger to her Bob Kane. Without him and his suggestions, Sailor Moon would've more like than likely been a forgettable flop.

As a 35 year old gay dude, I still watch sailor moon to this very day. I remember getting up early, before I had to go to school watching Sailor Moon. It was so exciting watching something I had never seen before. I knew they were different, but it felt relatable because I also felt different as a kid but at that time, I didn't know why. Reflecting back, It helped me understand more about myself than I realized. I may have not known I was gay as a kid then, but I knew that it was okay to be different because usagi and the rest of the senshi were different. It wasn't patronizing as you said, and that's why I loved it. It was a place I could go at that time where I didn't need any walls to pretend to be anyone other than myself. If that makes sense. P.S. did anyone watch Ronin Warriors? I watch it around the same time and loved it as much as Sailor Moon!

I always wanted to be a Sailor Scout more than a Z Fighter. I called myself Sailor Titan and asked my mom to get me an orange Sailor uniform. Probably raised more questions in her than I wanted. Anyway, villains didn't even die most of the time in Sailor Moon (the anime). They would become major supporting characters. Meanwhile, main characters would be forgotten in Dragon Ball if their power level wasn't high enough. Remember Launch? Because Toriyama didn't.

I grew up in Italy, and Japanese anime were 95% of our streamed cartoons. They aired from 6 am to 10pm at alternate times on every major or regional channel. All the 70s and 80s classics, every world masterpiece theater series, mecha shows, magical girl shows, Tom Sawyer, Ranma ½, Kimagure Orange Road, Hello! Spank, Candy Candy, The Rose of Versailles... we had it all. Then came Sailor Moon. It had the BEST dub. Look it up. Usagi’s monologue at the end of S1 is gut wrenching. It had some censure, but not drastic to the plot line (sadly, the most blatant LGBT themes). I think Sailor Moon defined a new era of animation not only in the US, but worldwide. Sailor Moon explored every facet of the human experience. In that lies its broad appeal. It still elicits strong emotions in all of us, now adults, because it is the show that taught us the meaning of friendship, of love, of sacrifice, of pursuing a dream, and perseverance.

This guy knows... 😎 Okay, so I've probably dropped this story in the comments elsewhere, so here's the Cliff Notes. Ronin Warriors was the anime that got me into anime. After it mysteriously disappeared, I survived off my friend's bootleg collection and Sailor Moon until I moved off Camano Island and rediscovered cable, the internet, and, y'know, civilization. You know about the Ronin Warriors action figures, right? 'Coz I had them ALL. When I was 16. And I totally took them out of the original packaging like a doofus. I regret nothing.

I was exposed to anime for the first time on one of those late night blocks as a small kid suffering from insomnia and sneaking out to the living room . Sailor moon , Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragonball , CC Sakura, Pokemon, the list goes on and on to this day. It is crazy to see how much the medium has changed. But yes, Sailor moon legitimately (and InuYasha) changed my life. Ps same age (27) and rewatching SailorMoon and other classics now and they still rock!😎✌😘 thanks for this video. It used to be hard to be an anime fan 😋😋

for me she was the next level of a modern princess, here we already had saint seiya, samurai troopers and shurato 2 years before sailor moon we already know how anime works for boys but not for girls, and disney princess are all from old medieval times and sailor moon had all the good things and new things, cause every other anime or series (we already had tokusatsu super heroes shows before power rangers) are so focused on fight there isn't human side there isn't a day in the school, sailor moon was a heroine that need to live as real girl and save the city, we saw something on spiderman 90's but it was only peter already in fight angry with his hard life, We don't watch the hard life part, but we found this on sailor moon, she connect with us in a way no other can she was a pretty human super hero, real human teenager and the other girls helps they are less imperfect but still human but powerfull to kill any enemy with one hit, they are complete!

How I got introduced to anime?? I love telling this story. Pull up and chair, put your phone down(not literally) and open your ears(eyes) up So I think the year was like 98 or 99, I was in the mall with my dad and at this time there was a video store called Suncoast Videos, and I wandered off from my dad to pick a movie I wanted to see. On the shelves towards the back of the store I found these weird looking cartoons on the cover boxes and immediately got intrigued. There was a guy nearby (another black man mind you) who told be what I was looking at was this cool show called Dragonball Z. For about 15 minutes he explained what the show was about, cool moments that happened, the things that go down during fights, the rivalries. 15 minutes felt like hours to me because I'm only seeing what he's telling me in my imagination(which already had become strong due to my passion for video games) and not long after this I eventually saw the show. My dad showed up and had to drag me out of Suncoast but I never forgot that guy and how cool he seemed to me being an adult black man and watching things that I liked. It was refreshing for me because everyone around me either liked sports and music videos, neither of which interested me. My cousins often made fun of me for my lack of skill in bball or whatever new rap song I hadn't heard. But after going into Suncoast I had something that was my own, something I didn't have to enjoy just because others around me did.

I'm an older guy, in my mid-40s. So for the "Were you a Toonami Kid?" question: No. I was an adult with newborn kids at that time. :) I remember watching Speed Racer when I was younger, though don't remember much about it. The first anime that I do remember watching was Voltron when it first aired in 1984 when I was 10 (aka target audience for shows like Transformers, He-Man, etc. of which I also liked). That was my first taste in long-term animated storytelling. I then remember watching Robotech the next year, at least the first season and recognized this season-long story arc vs. "episode of the week" format and that brought me in. After that, I didn't even know of any anime going on around me until 2000 when a co-worker suggested I watch Evangelion. After that, I was hooked and started reaching out for more anime to watch and still do to this day. Currently playing catchup on Digimon Tri. I watched the first five parts as they were released, but never watched the 6th. So I'm re-watching all of it from the start so I remember what happened. :)

When I was around 5-6 years old in 1987..I was flipping through the channels late night..and on HBO I saw this awesome "cartoon" called Vampire Hunter D for the first time, my child mind was blown! After that, I was hooked! But it was a struggle growing up, I could never find it again..Until the early 90s when I finally learned what "Japanimation" was thanks to the Sci-Fi channel. But it was so hard finding any other anime, until Sailor Moon came out in 1995, it filled a void that was long overdue, but it was only a few seasons..and on the internet, you saw all these other Sailor Scouts that you would NEVER see until the 2000s in America. It was a struggle being an Anime fan back then.

In Canada it was on YTV in a prime after school time slot and one of the hosts of the tv channel was actually the english voice of Chibi-Usa. It was really cool because kids were so used to seeing her, Stephanie Beard, as the host of "The Zone" on YTV and there she was introducing episodes of an anime she voiced a character for! All of the boys I was friends with in grade school actually thought the sailor scouts were cool and wanted to pretend to re-enact episodes and as a little girl it was so great having female superheroes that people thought were strong and cool. I grew up hearing that girls are weak and boring but most of the boys had to admit that Sailor Moon was awesome. I think it was a really important show. It also played around with gender expression with Fisheye and obviously showed a healthy and really romantic lesbian relationship... The dub confused me because I knew "cousins" didn't do romantic things for each other so I asked my poor mother if it was incest, which I had just learned about ... she tried to explain it away as if "cousin" was just a "silly nickname" and they were not actually related. Who would have guessed that something like that would confuse children even more than just letting the characters remain regular ol lesbians??? My mom thinks it's hilarious looking back now though. Having your 7 year old point to the TV and worriedly ask if two of her favourite characters are in an incestuous relationship must have been a shock.

I wanted to go back and re-watch the original DiC 90's sailor moon, and I realized that the re-mastered version is EVERYWHERE. It is impossible to find the old Terri Hawkes english dub anywhere. I finally went onto ebay and ordered what I hope is all the original seasons. It is nice they went in and re-mastered it, but sometimes I want to hear the old voices and the names like Serena, Rini, and Darien. The new Sailor Moon Crystal is okay since it follows the manga and has less filler (by a lot) but it has lost all the charm of the original.

Watching this amazing vid, I have realized that I owe my love of anime to my older brother. Me being born in the early '96 I would have never found out about Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, and others if my brother hadn't have tv rights over me when we were kids. I remember having to watch DBZ and Sailor Moon and hating them, wondering why we had to watch them instead of Sesame Street or Mr Roger's Neighborhood. As I grew up a bit, I realized how amazing the shows really were. To this day, I still do and always will love anime and manga. Just don't tell my brother, he'll never let me live it down.

So i guess my mom introduced me she told me that i would grab my bowl of cereal and just sit front of the tv and watch it while i ate /while she did my hair. I was a Toonami kid (well kind of i think i really only watched Sailor Moon...)I remember one time Toonami had a sailor moon Marathon of every episode through the end of the 2nd season and my mom being the amazing woman that she is recorded like 2 vhs(at least 2-3 hours worth if not more ) worth of episodes for me and R is my favorite season so you best believe i watched those tapes over and over. It's really cool to look back on those tapes now cause they also have the Toonami bumpers(no commercials cause it was a commercial free marathon i thi nk) and it's just a nice little slice of my child hood i can hold onto :)

My heart lives with Toonami! Steve Blum, who did Tom's voice, along with Spike from Cowboy Bebop and Roger Smith from The Big O is still one of my favorite voice actors to this day. I was royally obsessed with Tenchi Muyo and, God bless my father for fueling my obsession, took me out to our local comic shop and I lost my ever living 12 year old mind when I found the Tenchi Muyo comics. Over 20 he bought me and I still have them to this day. ReBoot was also one of my favorites, one of those that kids these days, with computers being so normal, wouldn't truly appreciate. The first CGI anime and revolved around computer terms and the inner workings, also fueled my love of the start of technology. These are only a few of the reasons why people of my generation loved the 90's so much.

I was in elementary school when Sailor Moon aired in the US (I was born in 1986, in LA). I had Sailor Moon folders in high school and remember being being made fun of because I had "cartoons" on my folders. I didn't really have too many super heroes to look up to, except for Storm from X-Men and of course Sailor Moon. She made me feel like I could take on the world, and she still does :3 Also, I can confirm that anime was niche and difficult to find back before Toonami. My cousins and I (they are half Japanese) would download VCDs to get episodes or sometimes rent videos from Mitsuwa. It would take a few days to download say 1 episode of Gundam Wing and a week for a whole season of Tokyo Mew Mew. Sailor Moon was a hot commodity. I remember my cousin visiting her grandparents in Japan and telling me of every Sailor Moon promo she saw and what their outfits looked like in newer seasons. Good times :)

I grew up with older siblings and a nerd/geek dad. My dad actually lived in Japan for a time and I absolutely had access to Toonami and Sailor Moon was my show. Still is.

I'm 33, and i'm sure I was the first fan of Dragonball in the U.S.

@Dez Donovan You probably were the first fan, because I'm 30 and I started watching DBZ in '96... And didn't learn about the original DragonBall until I rented Curse of The Blood Rubies from BlockBuster two years later...

"THE ORIGINAL HENTAI POWER COUPLE" MIKE! YOU ARE OFFICIALLY MY FAVOURITE OVER GRANT WITH THAT LINE (sorry grant i still love your stuff i promise) Edit: to answer your questions, Sailor Moon was definitely my first anime. I'm barely a year older than you, so I'm also a Toonami Kid. That entire block (even when it pseudo morphed into Adult Swim's anime block) changed my life: Sailor Moon, DBZ, Kenshin, Outlaw Star, Inuyasha...all of it helped form my weeb phase which I've now re-entered thanks to my wife.

I would say that everything they were airing on Toonami would be my first exposure to anime and yes I was a Toonami kid.

Every new video I watch with you, reminds me that I'm not alone. Sailor moon was my first and I too was a UPN kid! I used to watch it before school. Toonami basically raised me, as a latch key kid it was all I had after school. But damn was it good.
