Hetch Hetchy Yosemite is one of the most scenic Valleys in all of the National Park System. Whether you’re hiking the Hetch Hetchy Loop Trail or looking to do some Hetch Hetchy fishing, there’s no denying the scenic beauty of the Valley’s reservoir. But the Hetch Hetchy Valley is also drowned under three hundred feet of water. In fact, the Hetch Hetchy Dam, which created that reservoir, is one of the most controversial projects ever undertaken in the National Park System. The dam was constructed as part of San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy Water System, a series of reservoirs and pipelines designed to convey water to the Bay Area.
The history of the Hetch Hetchy Dam is fraught with controversy, shady dealings, and broken promises. And it destroyed a pristine glacial valley in one of America’s most celebrated National Parks. This is the story of that dam. This is the story of how San Francisco stole the Hetch Hetchy Valley.
