I've been involved in Computer Vision for a long time now (in a third world country). I was part of a team that built an internal product similar to Scale AI (data-labelling) around 3, 4 years before these guys. This was an internal product that was never intended for public release. What Scale AI did was something everyone was already doing in silos, i.e. exploiting workers for data labelling. The only difference is that he made a service out of it. Whereas others only did it for their own companies (internal-only). This is often not discussed when people talk about the dark side of Scale AI. The guy didn't invent the dark side, it already existed, he just capitalised on it better (cuz silicon valley).

I don't usually comment but I feel obliged to say, thank you so so much for this! I was always very interested in scale ai but I didn't understand what they really did and I couldn't find anyone explaining what they did exactly. This video was sufficiently comprehensive and even addressed things that I didn't even know were happening like the dark side of scale ai. I also liked that you explained things like APIs in a very understandable way with good examples which was also something that I didn't see a lot. If I could give any advice, I'd say I'd prefer if there was less stock photos and more slides like at 1:58 which was a visual but also explanatory but that might be a personal preference for me.Either way, keep up the good work!

Would scale ai be considered SAAS? Also, is it true that Scale ai at first was an ML agency company? Thanks for the quality video!
@DarkModeDigest
@DarkModeDigest Жыл бұрын
if by SAAS you mean Software as a Service, then kind of. They do provide software to help companies build their AI and LLMs like Spellbook. But I see them more of a service-based company (at least for now) where they help annotate, curate, and collect companies' data to power their own AI applications. As for your 2nd question, they kind of were an ML agency. More like they provided taskers on demand for things like content moderation, data labeling, etc. Not specifically for AI, then pivoted to focus on AI once there was a huge demand for it. Glad you found this video insightful!

I would say they are a combination of both SaaS and consulting firm similar to Palantir. If you have a unique use case, they can tailor their pipelines to your needs given you shell out the $$. I think their end goal is pure SaaS where they sell their labeling models to companies.

I work as a freelancer for Scale (remotask), and while there are certainly challenges with the international workers, including a lot of scammers, the American workers are generally paid fairly. However, the platform we work on can be quite chaotic and to note that pay varies depending on your state and workers profile, with Scale paying at least the minimum wage across the board.

@DarkModeDigest
@DarkModeDigest 9 ай бұрын
She's legit and the real deal. Definition of 'work hard play hard' i would say. If you look at what she's done and what she's currently doing, she knows how to grow, execute. Passes (her current startup) continues to grow exponentially despite being in a very competitive space. She has her own VC fund which she frequently invests in. Look at what Scale has become. She was a thiel fellow and worked at faang companies during the golden years of the valley. and then i say she also plays hard because she parties like no other. Only person i know that can pull off throwing a mini festival for her birthday in miami. She calls it "Lucypalooza". She deserves all the hype.

@@DarkModeDigest Having been involved is the installation of several corporate data systems, and even creating fundamental design specs for the inhouse IT to built systems. THAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE, putting labels on the data so it was stored in a way that the software would produce reports that had some meaning. And this was so even when it was an accounting system, a plant maintenance management system, a parts and materials management system etc. There was no two people that could agree on a naming or categorizing system for the data, and then even the people actually entering the data had their own ideas about what "category" code to place a transaction data in. This got even worse when there were two or three levels of categories used to classify the transaction data. Then for years there has been all these promises of IT data "analysis" and "reporting". Implying that the data did not have to be "pre-structured" and "categorized" for IT to produce "meaningful reporting". Is that just a big BS S**t Pile???

paying your employees $1/hr is altruistic. You're just giving them an option. These people would be working for free or less than $1/hr otherwise because if they could make more than $1/hr, they would just do that. Capitalism 101.
@DarkModeDigest

This is true. But i'd also argue that the company has a responsibility to treat its employees (even contractors) fairly. These are people working for you. But unfortunately, many companies don't. This is indeed capitalism 101.

@@DarkModeDigest what does that even mean lol? Treating employees 'fairly'? Only people who have never made a deal in their life use a term like that. At the end of the day, we make deals with people. If you don't like the deal, you can decide not to take it, or leave. 'Fair' is subjective and nonsensical.

@@DarkModeDigest I know the smaller the communities, a socialist mindset is better which is largely why people have it. But frankly this trend in the West towards socialism needs to stop. People are brainwashed. A good resource is 'Sapiens' by Yuval Noah Harrari, chapter 16, 'the capitalist creed'. This aside, I appreciate the hard work you put into this video, we need more of that in this country.

“You don’t get to a billion dollars company without some shady stuff happening behind the scenes” - that’s a stupid statement. You are young and obviously don’t realize that Scale will soon replace most of its low-cost labor with AI automation. Based on your statements you don’t believe this is possible, so you will have to just wait and watch what happens and be surprised. I have been in AI since the early 90’s and DL for almost 9 years.

stop it with this AI will be sentient sooner than you think speak. Not only is it overdone its incredibly untrue. AI is essentially a glorified guesser that takes inputs and maps them to an output. Yes its incredibly powerful but also incredibly ignorant into what its learning and doing. So please for the love of god stop talking about AI in such a manner and stop quoting Elon Musk cause believe it or not, a man that hasn't done any formal research into AI and is too busy tanking two of his companies is not a reliable source.
