How Schumacher escaped Jordan in 1991

In 2005 Autosport's sister title Motorsport News uncovered a never-before-seen document showing that Michael Schumacher offered to drive for Eddie Jordan for at least three years if the Irishman gave him his break into Formula 1. So how did Schumacher manage to get the drive for one race and then leave?
Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw from Autosport speak exclusively to Jordan's technical director at the time, Gary Anderson, about exactly how Schumacher was able to escape to Benetton so quickly. Do you think things would have been different for Schumacher or Jordan if he’d continued at the team?

This is the greatest debut, MS literally blown everyone's mind in his first practice with Jordan, his first test of an f1 car with how fast he was. He was most likely getting the Silverstone record with Jordan! All of a sudden he ends up in spa literally a week or two later to go to his first race and completely out qualifies a lot of drivers while having no clue about the track and only using TV images to understand what each turn is, all with an average Jordan. Mind blowing. No one debuted better than MS and especially his first debut season for benetton with the 3rd best car came 3rd... with zero experience on each track.

that 91 Jordan, today, compared to modern F1 cars, looks like a 1959 car compared to that 1991 car. the molding of the frame, the suspension, the aileron, the steering wheel.... look at the bends and folds, it's like they couldn't make them any tighter with their technology, just like the 1960's engineers couldn't fold metal and pipes any tighter with theirs. Eddie Jordan does milk this Schumacher story. His Benetton years were impressive, but his Ferrari years and how he built the team around him is what is his most impressive achievement. I think the fact the Ross Brawn and Tom Wilkinshaw had intent on hiring Michael already, that Jordan thing was just a stop on the journey that was already inevitable.

Yeah, basically. Allegations of cheating followed Schumacher as a driver and the teams he competed for throughout his entire career. Luke Mallory mentioned Flavio Briatore being mentioned with Schumacher's career as head of Benetton and Briatore was convicted of fraud in 1984, convicted of fraud and being a con man in 1986 and banned from F1 in 2009 for cheating, so yeah, Benetton were obviously cheating.

Why did Eddie sign Yamaha engines for 1992? That was one of the dumbest decisions in F1 history. Those engines were horrible.
@patmaher9435
@patmaher9435 5 жыл бұрын
Because he had to pay for the Ford engines and they were pricey, the Yamaha deal was a works deal so the engines were free and that gave him money to spend elsewhere in the team. I doubt very much that he took the deal thinking the engines would be as bad as they turned out to be though. I remember reading a story that at one stage they started one up in the garage and started a stopwatch, the engine expired in something like 28 seconds and that was the baseline they had to work from :) a tough year.

Of course he was intersted in his bank balance. He owned an F1 team that barely had enough money to survive. Schumacher went to Benetton that was run by Flavio Briatore; a man who has been convicted multiple times for fraud and being a con man and who started a nightclub called the Billionaire. I think Briatore was just as interested in his bank balance as Jordan was.

Ok i am an American atty but our contract law is based almost exclusively on common law. Therefore first this is NOT advice. Two, the way i read it, had i been the judge interpreting it, i would have voided it as "vague". Vague contracts are unenforceable and voidable. The is a case of american law in estate law we do study a case called the million dollar word over the word "the", so yes a word CAN cause an affect to the agreement. Here iv don't see that. I see vagueness. Howerever it coukd be argued that the word "the" being scratched out and replaced with "a" means nothing more than correct grammar. Using "a " is proper grammar. No one writes or should, "the driver agreement" as it refers to past tense. He states the time and further the requirements for the contract to be valid. So one can argue invalidity due to vagueness because b/c of the "a", and its' validity b/c it has the 3 parts a contract MUST habe to be legal: 1. Offer Clearly an offer was made 2. Acceptance- clearly it occurred as he raced; and 3 consideration. Now if he was paid by Jordan you have an invalidity again b/c a "k" (contract) must have no. 3 and a 4th which here is known but called "capacity". I.e. was he old enough by law? Or did he have the requsite mental ability to accept a contract? That is a yes. So we are left with the first 3. Lastly, I've must consider whether michael was making the offer or responding. If he is making the offer and Eddie accepted then the terms were clear and i wouk rule he was bound until the mercedes option of 1994. Were it a response (seems to be an unsolicited offer) its odd. That would imply that he knew the terms andnjust made a grammatical change in fact had tge word tge been used it would mean that he is just reminding eddie he has accepted "the deal" In the end in my opinion, this is a great test question and i would definitely use it. Is it an offer for a contract? Or the acceotance thereof or does that one word chance make it vague and invalid? Good one. I would've ruled against michael, however.

In my humble opinion. when people look back into Schumi's career they sort of miss how much influence Senna had. Not directly but in their mutual ruthlessness and pride/egos while rivals. The other thing that gets forgotten is the impact of Senna's death on F1 in the couple of years following 1994. At the time of Ayrton Senna's death, Michael Schumacher was young and didn't really care about anyone but himself (look up his podium win at Imola the day Senna died and the reaction of everyone else then) and with time he grew, he learnt and evolved to the point that when asked who was F1's number 1 driver, he named Senna.

Michael was a more complete driver than Senna. He was ruthless like Senna and had racing inteligent like Prost. No driver could improve an f1 team except Michael, Lauda and Prost. But Michael brought it to higher level by making the team dominant. Senna always went after the best team because he didn't need to work harder to improve car performance and let Prost to do anything for McLaren.
