A number of travel companies announced they will no longer sell SeaWorld tickets after the theme park chain came under fire for its use of orcas, also known as killer whales, in entertainment shows. The brand pledged to stop breeding orcas and now says that it’s changing those shows to be less about tricks and dancing and more about education.» Subscribe to NBC News: nbcnews.to/SubscribeToNBC

No matter what is said over the microphone to an audience doesn't change the fact that these whales are being held from being in their natural environment that is more to them than just the ocean as humans perceive it. They need sonar freedom at set frequencies or it impounds them. Their sonar system was not meant to bounce off a wall that surrounds them, especially for years on end. I pray they are all released back to their instinctive nature..where human interaction is their individual choice, and where they can reconnect to their true natural abilities as the sentient beings of the ocean that they were born to be.

I don’t agree with capturing Orcas and making them perform, and I can’t stand SeaWorld… but these whales were all born in Captivity. They can never be released into the wild. They’d die. Also, there is one other acceptable scenario to keep an Orca (or any animal) in captivity aside from them being born there… The only other situation in which it’s okay… and the only situation in which I’d get behind taking Orcas from the wild and putting them in captivity, would be a rescue, rehab, release program… where injured Orcas are rehabilitated and then released back into the wild, and the only instances in which they’re kept are when they are deemed unreleasable for a qualifying reason.
@oliverallen3713

1) not all of sea,world's orcas were born in captivity. Corky is on example of a wild caught whale at sea world. 2) if the family pod is located there is a chance that those whale could be gradually rehabilitated and reintroduced to their pod. Keiko was successfully taught to hunt, and spent 4 years in a sea pen before swimming off. He spent a year as afree whale before dying pneumonia which happens in nature . Those who's pods can't be located or who are captive bred can be housed housed in sea pens- no need to continue to torture then in tiny barren concrete boxes.

Not to mention, moving her to a seapen would introduce her to all kinds of natural bacteria and diseases she hasn't touched in 50 years. Keiko survived for 5 years. His pod was actually decimated by Orca capture hunts. His health condition was actually deplorable in captivity with Marine Biologists stating that he would not have lived more than a year or 2 under his captive conditions. Once he was rehabilitated and transported back to his home waters, he healed, became much healthier, gained weight and required less antibiotics, roamed up to a 300 mile radius and would spend weeks out exploring the ocean without human interaction. He did return to seek out human interaction. And still required some Veterinary care and did pass away from Pneumonia but he LIVED FREE for 5 years. Keiko WAS a success.

There is no evidence to support that claim. There is no bone or muscle in the dorsal fin (unlike their other fins, which do have bones). The orcas in human care spend a lot of time near the surface to interact with the behaviourists. Partially drooped dorsal fins can also be observed in certain wild populations that hunt near the surface.

Yes, a lot of staff do, but the company does not. If Seaworld cared, they would not be using glitter in their 60th anniversary plushes, almost every material in their gift shops wouldn’t be made out of polyester or plastic, they wouldn’t have cleaner fish in the state of california, would acknowledge and actively go against the orca captures in china/russia and against the taiji dolphin slaughter in japan, but who knows. Funny that those travel agencies are refusing to sell tickets to any place with captive cetaceans, like certain zoos and aquariums- SeaWorld, Mystic Aquarium, Georgia Aquarium, Brookfield Zoo, and others BUT they won't stop selling to Disney World, even though Animal Kingdom has bottlenose dolphins. This is all about getting more money, and has nothing to do with animal welfare. If it was about animal welfare, they'd realize that those places take good care of their animals. Even if they are inherently against cetaceans in captivity, they wouldn't be two-faced and give Disney a pass. It's unfortunate that so many people don't understand the role that zoos and aquariums play in conservation- captive breeding, education, research, and funding research in the field are all part of what zoos and aquariums do- SeaWorld included. Unfortunately, conservation is so underfunded that many people have to do month or even years of volunteer work before they see pay. You'd make more washing dishes or working a cashier unfortunately. At least zoos and aquariums grant money to help fund programs so they can actually pay their workers.

SeaWorld does not participate in captive breeding for most species because marine fish, with a few exceptions, cannot be bred in captivity. If anything, aquariums (home and public) are detrimental to wild reef fish populations, especially in Indonesia, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. The only upside I can find is wild conservation work and rescue-release programs. Orcas don’t have to be captive to achieve this. I believe cetaceans in general are capable of being held in captivity, but orcas appear to have failed the test. Not as badly as narwhals, dall’s porpoises, or right whale dolphins, but failed nonetheless. I would also like to point out just HOW MUCH money the executives at SeaWorld raise earn each year. If they cared about conservation, they’d be a nonprofit, just like many of the other aquariums you listed.

Willy, aka Keiko, was freed and suffered a slow, painful and preventable dead at the hands of animal activists. His release was a big failure and the poor animal had to pay for it with its life.

I thought the reason they freed Willy was because people tried to drain his tank while he was in it

Max Covfefe so they need to live in an ocean filled with pollution, bacteria, boats, etc? The ocean is killing these whales. We have a higher calf mortality percentage in the wild than at SeaWorld

I love seeing the whales at Seaworld. And have been fortunate enough to see them in the wild too. Yes whales and dolphins should have never been captured in the 1st place. But what can you do. Unfortunately like all other animals that are born in captivity. Can never be returned to a natural environment. I will enjoy the orcas at Seaworld while they are there. And Seaworld has taken great care of them all. Yes unfortunate things have happened. But it happens in all aspects of life.

@@idcHedumpedmeno, they can’t. If you were to let these animals go into the wild, they would just die, because all they are used to is human company and having humans feeding them

Go to seaworld all the time and still will support them either way .When you go to the shows you see the bond the trainers have with the whales.Yes it can be sad that there in such a confined area but they cant be released, there not wild anymore and wouldn't survive.Theres alot more that they do at seaworld's to help out in the wild ,its not all about the orcas.They have a conservation team that saves animals in wild and am sure they've helped save more animals in the sea than any of you have .

They can be released into whale sanctuaries. Why are you proud to support the drugging and torture of whales? All sea world needs to do is release their animals in captivity, I mean they have other forms of entertainment they can offer. Please go watch blackfish!

It's still just about making money from captive animals for human entertainment. Stating that you treat the slaves better than before isn't justification, just an attempt at trying to stem falling profits.
