Great old house with an interesting history! The photos of the interior seem to be when the house was in need of repair and was beyond its heyday ,but was still beautiful ! Glad it has been preserved!

It looked at one point like it was a very bad disrepair. But I’m glad to hear in the end that it’s still around

I noticed that too. The house looked seriously run down in some of the photos and the windows in the library seemed to be bending. In one picture it looked like a window had been boarded up from outside.

While technically correct about the royal picnic, the narration left me with the impression of Queen Elizabeth II instead of King George VI and his wife, Elizabeth (1939). It was Daisy who gave FDR his dog Fala. When I visited, it was in the derelict, unpainted condition shown in several of your photos, and you couldn't go near the outbuildings or the lake (overgrown with thorny vines and poison ivy). The interior wasn't in much better shape: dingy, dusty, silk upholstery rotting... I see that it has been painted so hopefully there is ongoing work on the interior spaces and the grounds. That said, you could still see the underlying magnificence of the mansion. Excellent video.

What a remarkable story. Daisy Suckley was a wise woman who was willing to work to earn money. She saw that she would probably live an unusually long life and made arrangements for it. I would probably have sold the estate and gotten a little place in town. Whatever Daisy's motives she saw to it that a wonderful house has been preserved for many to enjoy.

I really enjoy the fact that this place was an actual home and not an ostentatious showplace. You can tell from most of these pictures that a bunch of rambunctious kids ruled the roost here!

Wow! I KNEW I had heard the name "Suckley" before... but just couldn't place it .. Until I saw the name "Daisy". Fascinating history - Stunning home. She was a smart girl, and quite the visionary.

You need to mention that for many years before and after Daisy's death, the wooden house had lost all its paint and had weathered to almost totally black in color. To see it pink now is quite a shock.

I believe this is called a "life estate". It still occurs. If someone owns property they can transfer that encumbered with an estate for the life of someone, such as an aunt, a spouse, or in this case, herself. The property is still transferrable by the grantor--or purchaser, but comes with that condition that remains until the grantee dies. The house is beautiful, so grand, and a delightful story about Daisy.

I toured it when it looked like these photos. Hope they have restored more of the house by now. Daisy hosted charity teas to raise $$ in the 1980s and my parents attended one. My mother's family has been in the area almost as long as the Livingston family line Daisy is from. We were on the next boat! But we never had THAT level of old money.

Honestly the footprints of each of the rooms is pretty small. It’s grand in decor but is size it’s not massive, like more rooms that are smaller rather than few larger rooms.

Nicely done and very interesting. The name of the house "Wilderstein" is pronounced Will-der-stein, not Wild-er-stein. Also, as a point of interest, Margaret "Daisy" Suckley gave FDR his beloved dog, "Fala".

If I ever had the kind of money to build a big house, I wouldn't build one for show. I'd build one no bigger than 2,000 sq ft. I don't care if I was a billionaire. I would NEVER wanna live in such a home. It's a total waste. People with money always want to show off. To be honest I wasn't impressed. TOO BUSY was this house.
