Ship's engines are one of the biggest diesels. In this video, we are trying to explain the working of a large 2 stroke slow-speed marine diesel engine by analyzing the similarities and differences it has to a common automobile engine. The video throws light on the constructional differences, operational differences and maintenance differences. In this video we talk briefly about 2stroke diesels, the need of crosshead, how reversing of an IC engine is done, the differences in cylinder lubrication and cooling of a marine engine with respect to an automobile engine, etc.

Regarding lubrication of ships engine,cylinder lubrication is only for liner and piston rings for preventing different types of wear.Other parts such as crankshaft,camshaft,crosshead etc being lubricated by lube oil which is different from cylinder oil and is pumped from the main engine lube oil sump to the engine through cooler.

Space constraints വകവെക്കാതെ ഒരു ഇലക്ട്രിക് മോട്ടോർ starter വെച്ചാൽ കൂടെ അവിടെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രശ്നം ഉണ്ട്... ഈ മോട്ടോർ പ്രവർത്തിപ്പിക്കാൻ ആവശ്യമായ ഇലക്ട്രിസിറ്റി അവിടെ ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. അതിനും മേൽപറഞ്ഞ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. 2. ഇവയെക്കൾ ഒക്കെ പ്രാധാന്യം ഉള്ള ഒന്നാണ് ഈ പറയാൻ പോകുന്ന പോയിൻ്റ്... കപ്പലുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടവർക്ക് അറിയാവുന്ന ഒരു വാക്കാണ് "Dead Ship" എന്നത്... കപ്പലിൻ്റെ പ്രവർത്തനം പൂർണമായി നിലച്ച് പോകുന്ന ഒരു അവസ്ഥ ആണ് അത്. That block is often called as crosshead block and the part in the block which is rubbing the guide rail is called guide shoe or crosshead shoe, hope it answers your concern.

I knew that ship engine could be operated in a reversible manner due to film Titanic, in which they show the reverse moment of the engine, coincidentally you asked the question related to it. OLYMPIC was the sister ship of Titanic. Built by Whitestar line.

Nalla informative video 👏... Oru doubt...How's the ignition taking place ....is it SI or CI?? I have also heard that modern day ships can go reverse without changing crankshaft direction, but by adjusting angle of propeller..

It is compression ignition like a normal diesel engine, those propellers are called controlled pitch propllers where you can adjust the pitch to increase speed and reverse motion. Those are mainly employed on smaller ships which are made for special purposes. But normally big cargo ships have fixed pitch propellers.

ഒരുപാട് പഴയ എൻജിൻസിലൊക്കെ സീ വാട്ടർ ആയിരുന്നു കൂളിംഗിന് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത്, അത് പൈപ്പുകളെയെല്ലാം നാശമാക്കുകയും കൂലേർസ് എല്ലാം തടസപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിനാൽ ഇപ്പോൾ ഉള്ള എല്ലാ എൻജിൻസിലും ഫ്രഷ് വാട്ടർ ആണ് കൂളിംഗിന് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. ഇ ഫ്രഷ് വാട്ടർനെ കൂൾ ചെയ്യാനായി വലിയ പ്ലേറ്റ് ടൈപ്പ് കൂളറിൽ സീ വാട്ടർ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
