Flying far and in exceptional comfort is all well and good, but not if you can’t land at all the airports you need to reach. This is why Dassault’s latest Falcon 8X jet has been developed to be need minimal runway space to touch down on. AIN editor-in-chief Matt Thurber had the chance to test the aircraft’s short field performance for himself when he went flying with Dassault test pilots. The scenery in France and Switzerland was breath-taking, but so too was the Falcon 8X’s performance.

The G700 quoted field performance is 6250ft take off!! Distances are getting ridiculous. Many want private jets because of the convenience to land at smaller runways. Dassault have always (I hope they continue) to buck the trend and aim for short field performance.

It will only take one engine explosion to ground this plane forever. 3 engines closely together is an engine failure led disaster in waiting. One explosive engine failure will take out the hydraulic lines to the tail planes and rudder. Will possibly ignite an adjacent engine. will possibly destroy control input to remaining engines. DON'T TAKE YOUR FAMILY ON THIS AIRCRAFT.

The Falcon 8x/7x has the best short field performance than the two you mentioned. Whether the 650ER/7500 can land in that particular airfield will require a look at their landing performance data but I'm quite sure the 7500 has a better landing performance than the 650ER due to the 7500's wing slats resulting in lower landing speeds.

@Zak Giffgaff The SAAB Gripen and Dassault Rafale are among the top fighter jets in the world, with the Gripen offering unmatched performance and capabilities for the buck And the Concorde crash of 2000 was due to poor maintenance of a Continental DC-10, of which a chunk of metal fell off onto the runway, and led to the Concorde running over it causing the tire to puncture and parts of it causing the engines to explode. Making short field landings are relatively easy if you don't mins abusing the brakes and tires. You make landings like this very often and the cost of changing brakes and tires could be amazing to say the least. Not denigrating the airplane, am sure it is amazing, but these landings are not normal for any airplane. The Boeing 727, pound for pound, had the best brakes I ever used in any airplane, including the 747. But either airplane, depending upon weight, could make very short landings but you had to wait on the ground 45-60 minutes for the brakes to cool enough to take off again. Obviously, these are much heavier planes than a corporate jet but the principals are the same. I could go on but mercifully I won't. LOL

Trijet config is somehow has a lot of disadvantages especially for safety issues ,fuel efficiency is higher , lifespan of air frame, noise issue, operating costs ... etc... for example: safety issue : if the middle engine catches on fire , it will probably affect other engines too lifespan of the air frame : in trijet config the vibration in the small area of the tail section is considerably much higher than twin jet config and it makes high momentum due to S duct and the air frame is in high tension forces and it would have a lower life span and higher operating costs comparing to twin e.g. there are plenty of air worthy twin private jets made in 70's on the market but few reliable trijet on the market and yet no customer to buy even for late models. noise issue: S duct makes huge amount of noise in the cabin so manufacture should solve this issue by adding more isolation in the tail section till half of the cabin so it will cause more extra weight and reducing cabin storage space... just do a compare! trijet is known and very famous for higher fuel consumption by over 30%. operating cost of trijet is a least 25% higher than twin e.g. imagine if a mechanic should check 3 fuel pumps rather than 2 at the end the only reason Dassault’s Falcon makes trijet is that they don't need to go to a lengthy and costly processs of designing, manufacturing and certificating a new twin jet model so they improve their previous trijet models and try to look for the advantages of trijet config

Ok, 8x can land where it can't take off. So what's the use?

This is all great, but as someone below pointed out, Dassault needs to create a real competitor to not only the G700, and Global 7500, but also the G650, and in some ways the G500/600. I say that his because the 900 can’t do what the 500 can do. The 7x can’t do what the 600 can do and none of them can do what the 650 can do. They may be able to fly the same distances (in some cases, and at much reduced speed) and get in and out of shorter runways, but 99% of the time, runway length is NO factor. When we look at cabin size, and long range cruise speed, the Falcons, as good as they are, don’t touch the aircraft mentioned above.
