In an article Emma Watson herself said she didn’t want to wear corsets but corsets aren’t just for small good looking waist, at that time women wore it for good back posture too, they thought of the corset as something elegant but nowadays people think of it as some type of weird jail which squishes the body.

Yeah I know it's like a fantasy movie but a little historical accuracy wouldn’t have hurt

If only she had some kind of platform she could use to educate people on the history of the corset instead of bending to the propaganda men created to make them look bad

Belle’s blue dress being hiked up always made it look like she went to the bathroom and accidentally tucked her skirt into her underwear and goes about her day not noticing…

Even the "Once Upon a Time" TV series did at least two better versions of Belle's yellow dress than the 2017 film did. Their take on Cinderella's dress, though...not so much. If you haven't watched the show, I highly recommend it. It's the one series I would love to be able to completely forget about so I could experience watching it for the first time all over again.

I love Once Upon a Time! I do like Belle's dress, it's clearly lower budget but that's kind of the charm of the whole show. But I love the costume design in the 2015 Cinderella film so much, it's kind of hard for anything to beat that.

Well the first problem the dress was not yellow in the animated movie. It was actually a really shiny gold. The other issue I have with the yellow monstrosity was the wierd ribbon thing going looking like rags that hang in the back. The bodice doesn’t even match the dress. That and if it’s not even fully floor length where you can see she’s wearing some kind of black boots.

I think making the 2017 dress yellow wasn't a bad idea honestly. The original Cinderella dress was silver, but the blue one in the newer movie is beautiful. As for every other element of the dress, I agree it was really poorly put together.

@@alyssanicole336 it might have looked a little better if it was gold. However they claimed they tried to copy the design from the original but the original has gathering and ribbon, not very hard to translate to reality. I’m glad I’m not the only one to think the dress is ugly. Plus the pink lipstick they put on her I not very flattering either. I also feel the scene was kind of forced, Emma Watson is a great actress but she just doesn’t seem to immerse herself in this scene. She did not convince me she was falling for the beast, it was more like cold and robotic at times. Even the dance itself looked rehearsed and no much feeling at all or fluidity.

They reused the footage ftom the end of sleeping beauty for the part when belle and the beast are dancing the end which could be why the background characters are dressed in the medieval style.

Great video, I love that you went so into the details of the costuming, what worked vs what didn't. It was very insightful and made me think about how they could have done things differently. Have you seen the 2014 French version of the fairytale? La belle et la bête has AMAZING costumes especially their green dress! Beauty and the beast is one of my favourites so really excited someone talked about this!

I think the fact that the costume designer went out of her way to emphasize how much input Emma had says everything. That is a woman trying to subtly tell any future employers not to blame her because the star and everyone else tied her hands.

I'm not sure how true that is, I suspect it must have been a little frustrating for Jacqueline Durran to be told what historical details she had to disregard, but it is part of the job to listen to the actress, and I think an important part of creating costumes. She did also work with Emma later, in Little Women from 2019. Regardless, we don't actually know and all we can do is speculate.

The reason the end ballroom scene has people dressed in clothing from the wrong time period is because that animated footage was copy-pasted from Sleeping Beauty. I know that sounds crazy but it's true. Disney copy-pasted their own footage a number of times. The waltz that Aurora and Philip have in their last scene is the exact waltz Belle and Beast have. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nsdkg5mJq5eYd3U.html

Hello, thank you for making this video. It was very interesting to see the comparisons and your (historical) insight. I agree with many of your points in the video. Probably the biggest pet peeve I had about the live-action adaptation (aside from the iconic yellow dress) was the Toms shoes. When I saw them in the movie, it just really took me out and it took a while for me to believe I saw them right before facing my shocked denial that they really were straight up in the movie. 😂 I did appreciate the layers of fabrics and patterned versions of the iconic blue dress Belle wears, but I would have loved to see more dress types. AND THE GREEN DRESS! I've always loved her dresses; I was hoping we'd get a French twist of Scarlett O'Hara's iconic green curtain dress from Gone with the Wind. Seeing this video made me want to see you react or talk about the French Beauty and the Beast adaptation, "La Belle Et La Bette" from 2014. (It's free on Amazon Prime Video/Movie with ads and rentable on Amazon video/movie and KZfaq). There are many diverse and grand princess-royal-looking dresses in that movie of which I think are absolutely gorgeous and deserve much attention. As I write this, I realize the 2014 movie kind of has the green dress that I was hoping to see in 2017 BatB. If you haven't seen the movie and you like beauty and the beast, especially one that takes a little bit more from the OG fairytale version but also has a very unique twist, I definitely recommend checking it out. Aside from my rant, I love the golden make up and yellow shirt along with the very cute earrings paying homage to Belle I am assuming. I love it when people dress up a bit based on the topic they are talking about. Overall, I enjoyed watching this very much. ✨✨✨

Although the 1991 animated adaptations is more likely in a 1889/1890 setting (and therefore makes the 2017 live action adaptation kind off inaccurate) I still love that the 2017 adaptation was set in a rococo setting. Still hate the yellow dress. And I wish that the 1991 animated one would have alos been in a mid 18th century setting T_T
@alyssanicole336
@alyssanicole336 5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure the 1991 animated film has many inspirations from the late 19th century, but I do think that many Disney or other fairytale films are so loosely based in history that it doesn't particularly work to try and place them in a specific era.

I don't think it was her fault that the movie was subpar, but I do dislike when I watch a movie and all I see is the actor instead of the character they're playing. I do think she had the potential.

I wouldn't recommend wearing Corset under any dress. I can tell you about them. They're very uncomfortable to wear. And besides this what Corset do to anyone body. A corset will gradually cause the core muscles to weaken, leading to back pain, poor posture and overall physical weakness. Cinching the waist also reduces lung capacity and pushes the intestines down

Well if a corset is worn incorrectly it can hurt you, but if you wear a corset that fits you in the right way then you'll be fine
@Wizard608
@Wizard608 Жыл бұрын
this has been proven false and inaccurate already. Corsets are just underwear. There are corsets made for plus size people, and there are different sizes of corsets for different kinds of people. Again, the corset is made to make your posture look good and to support your body while wearing a big gown. It's not a torture device.

I can tell you about them, too. I've made and worn both modern and Victorian corsets. They are SCAFFOLDING. Most of the shaping comes from padding and while the odd person on occasion might have tight-laced, it wasn't standard. There are so many dress historians on KZfaq alone that have covered this topic and they ALL cite the research they use in the videos and many (if not all) of them have practical experience with corsets as well. Type "Corset myths" in the search bar on KZfaq. If you are willing to entertain the possibility that you are wrong about corsets, you can learn a heck of a lot and the next time some ignorant sensationalist nonsense reaches you, you will have developed the critical thinking skills necessary to not let people lie to you. I suggest starting with a channel called, "Prior Attire." She has many videos debunking this stuff by showing the viewer what she can do while wearing a corset. Not just breathing or touching her toes. She does some rock climbing, sports, gymnastics, horseback riding, and fencing too. Please stop spreading this "corsets were the WOOOORST!" stuff. The people who actually know what they're talking about are tired of playing Whack-a-Mole with over a century of anti-feminist propaganda.

I am glad that the costume designer Mark Bridges won for Phantom Thread as Best Costume during the Oscars 2018, Beauty & The Beast too was nominated but I am glad it did not win, I prefer the yellow dress from the 2D version since it was sleeveless and lovely to me while Emma's looked boring and it looked like some cheap prom gown/dress to me. Coincidentally in the movie Phantom Thread, there are sleeveless gowns in the movie, so this is proof that you don't have to create decent and covered costumes all the time so that it'll be 'Oscar-worthy' which is close-minded. Facts are facts in the end, it was Phantom Thread that beat Beauty & The Beast during the 2018 Academy Awards. This is what I really think, and these are all just based on my personal opinions after all. No matter what, the Beauty & The Best live action never won at all during the 2018 Oscars and there must be a reason why they never won though they were nominated. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZNka8d427iun58.htmlsi=R_xNJE1P_1_e1277 He did only won the Oscar but also the jet ski fyi, good for him!
