The standing on the left thing is actually a habit instilled into children in school. It's not really for escalators per say but rather when in school, you have entire classes moving together. Everyone standardises to stick to the left when moving. So, there is smooth following human traffic in the school compound especially on the stairs. This becomes deeply ingrained by the time you become an adult and start working. So, that's why you see everyone stick to the left on escalators.

NYC pride themselves with a subway system in operation for more than a century. Sure it's old and outdated but not easy to shut a line and stations for modernization and disrupt the commute of hundreds of thousands citizens. NYC economy would be in shambles.

@@2ry1n That's not an excuse though. Singapore also managed to renovate and update their trains and stations bit by bit. It wasn't that high-tech and modern at the start when it first opened. There were no ceiling fans in the past, no monitors showing you the arrival times of the next trains, no barriers to stop people from falling onto the rails, no elevators and some stations didn't even have escalators. They renovated when the stations are closed for the night. Surely the subways are not open 24/7, right? All that talk about being impossible to upgrade is nothing but an excuse to not spend the money for it, all so the money goes into the pockets of the investors or the owners of the subway system. The stations, trains and rails in Singapore were kept high-tech and updated by the company to ensure quality service and experience, even if this has to cut into the yearly profits. I believe the government made the laws to ensure it that way, to ensure that part of the profits will be used to put back into the system. Now we have more stations coming up. New trains and the likes. Uncontrolled capitalism like USA is just a dystopia waiting to happen.

I think the problem in the United States nowadays is the ridiculously high construction cost. - For no reason one transit project in the United States cost more than any other country. I would say NY subway system is a century older than any other system. To shut down a line and stations for cosmetics modernization, the government is capable but at a cost to the citizens of that community that depends on it. The commuters would suffer and object to a shut down. Otherwise a system still in operation for more than a century is bragging rights itself that has helped maintain NYC as the richest city by GDP over the mentioned cities.

I think we got the impression that the service disruptions in the early-2010s are more avoidable if the rail operator had invested more in maintenance. The fare hikes in late 2019, the steepest ever approved in the Public Transport Council's then 20-yr history, was apparently to fund the follow-up maintenance that'd reduced the disruptions from the early-2010 highs, which seems to risk causing a moral hazard - where commuters are made to pay for the operator not having spent more on maintenance earlier

Sorry I will not put China in the same category. In Japan, keeping the train clean and quiet is a way of life, and has been so despite the train systems being decades older. In Singapore, most people are civilised only when there are rules and laws in place. Our oldest stations and lines are also not as pleasant as the recently built ones. China's system are far too new to judge, and the people far from being civilised unless they are the urban educated elites. Give them another 100 years, and see if they are as clean as the systems in the West, many of which are over 100 years old.

In many stations new tech is being used which is not even in Singapore or Japanese subway systems. To be fair there're also other ways that other cities' public transportation are better e.g. Sydney & Melbourne's trains may be less frequent & more expensive, but have more seats, while HK's MTR & London's Tube have more cross-platform interchanges although they're more expensive & their stations aren't as open-concept in design. So I guess there's some trade-offs. & Singapore doesn't have so much political pressure to contend with e.g. worrying about industrial action if it replaces conductors & other staff with more automation

It is the government that adopt policies that put the welfare and interests of the people Frist. Before ideology, before profits, before greed. Singapore is successful because it never take its eyes off the fundamentals: roofs over people's heads, food on the table, education for their kids, meaningful, well paying jobs, and the ability to save for retirement and access to healthcare. Happy people, fulfilled people do not vandalized. You can literally give them a spray can and tell a Singaporean they can vandalize their mrt trains and they won't get arrested and they still won't do it. Because they don't find fulfillment in destroying public properties because they have a stake in their countries.
