How Solar Storms Affect Humans and Electronics on Earth | WSJ Future of Everything

Power grids and much of our infrastructure are susceptible to solar storms that have a nearly 10% chance of happening per decade. Economists estimate a severe storm could cost billions, if not trillions, in damage. Solar storms often contain a few major components: solar flares, solar energetic particles and coronal mass ejections. These space weather events could knock out satellites as well.
WSJ explores how scientists and utilities operators spend time preparing and building new models to forecast solar storms to avoid worst-case scenarios.
Chapters:
0:00 Solar storms
1:06 Infrastructure risks
3:50 History of solar storms
5:33 Building defenses

I've been waiting and hoping! BTW, these events are not that rare, it's just rare that they point at the Earth, but they are happening all the time.

Protecting the grid requires air gapping its components. Simply shutting down the grid - "turning off" the power - isn’t enough. Transmission lines… well, they transmit. Telegraph lines didn’t have to be powered on to carry electrical current from the Carrington Event solar storm, they carried it regardless of any manmade electrical current because… they are transmission lines. Some places in the world are still working to piece things back together again after a disaster, and it’s taken this long despite having today’s full support of mass-production economy of scale, transportation and distribution logistics, and, last but not least, the uninterrupted operation of the electrical grid supporting all of it (both directly and indirectly). Recovery will become inconceivably more difficult, if not impossible, and generations long in time if only the USA is hit by a Carrington-level solar storm, which is impossible because that strong of a storm would effect the entire world. At that point, kiss recovery goodbye. It’s back to sticks and stones after the bullets run out.

Look at your relatives and those around you who do not want you to do good and want you to do evil. Look around you, see people around you who want bad things to happen to you. .
