Here is how the rather primitive SOUTH BEND MILL power feed works.
This obtuse feature was used on early SB mills. Later models used a SERVO variable speed power feed.

Mr. Pete, I've watched your videos for some time now and always enjoy them. So I thought I should take the time to tell you how much I appreciate your contribution to us all. I've often wished I could have done woodwork and metalwork the way you do, but life took me in another direction. Now at the age of 72 I thought I better tell you how much I appreciate you while I still can. Keep up the good work and I'll keep on enjoying every minute of your humor and tips and tricks.

@@mrpete222 I'm sure there are a lot more viewers out there just like myself who are enjoying your videos but just not saying anything. I'm sure that a message of encouragement goes a lot further than a click of the like button. Don't let the depression get at you, I've been fighting it for most of my life, but now and then I get an encouraging message and I know how much better I feel. So I hope you get a lot of encouraging messages today. Don't call it quits yet. What would you do all day? 🤣

I don't know but when you are used to these old mechanical power feeds , who were 100% predictable, these new low powered feed motors are quite a challenge. Haven't seen one where the feed speed was not influenced by the resistance of the milling operation.

I love how it appears they've just used a gearbox from a 9 or 10" SB lathe. 😂 I know you said it's a different gearbox, but I mean, at the most it appears they just made some modifications to the existing lathe design to wedge it onto the mill. I would rather have mechanical systems over servo motors every day of the week. But I just love the old machines, and would rather stand in front of an old mechanical manual machine all day and crank out parts slow as molasses than operate a fancy CNC. Thanks for the awesome vid! I love these old machines, and love seeing how they work!

@@mrpete222 It's still pretty cool how similar it looks I think. South Bend seems to have had a clear design aesthetic for their machines. I really like how easy it is to spot that a machine is a south bend. They have a very particular "look" to them. As do most of the old machines I think. You can tell a SB, or a B&S, or a Clausing, almost immediately at a glance, IMHO. Not like the "metal boxes" of today, that just kind of have a different paint job and name painted on them. You can really tell with the old machines that the way they look started at the end of an artists pencil, as a piece of art, before a casting pattern was ever made. I could wax on forever about them haha...

Lyle - Very interesting video. By today's standards these old purely mechanical drive mechanisms seem quite complex. I wonder - as did a previous commenter - about the power of the new smaller ones as compared to milling load. But then that is true of any machine - no matter how much power someone will figure out how to crash it. The mill I got from a high school is a 1968 Cincinnati CINEL with three power feeds and rapids. I'm just glad I've never been into the knee on it trying to figure out how it works! Much worse than a mechanical gearbox for sure. Have a good day and thanks for the edutainment this morning with the first cup of coffee.

Enjoyed the video, the Southbend feed system is very Rube Goldberg compared to the newer style. I've got a Cincinnati 1b mill that, at one time, had a power feed but when I purchased it that had been dismantled as I'm sure Bubba forgot to pay attention and it crashed breaking the gears, as I've learned from the Interweb that was often the case, so was dismantled. I have plans to build a feed using a stepper motor with a cog belt drive and your video has inspired me to get with it, it does get tiring cranking away all day when you have a big project. Thanks again!

Although the modern electronic table feed is great, I can't repair the high tech portion of it but I can repair the mechanical feed as found on your South Bend or my Van Norman. The Van Norman uses a separate motor to power a similar gearbox and drive shaft however the mechanism is all contained within the saddle after the drive shaft. It also uses permanent stops to prevent dangerous over travel and adjustable stops for stopping the cut on the work piece. Both can be used at once and it micro adjustable stop that can be manually eased up against after the power feed is disengaged by the primary stops. I guess I got a little wordy and off topic; my apology for that! Thank you for another great video. I don't think I will make it to Lost Creek Saturday; I really wanted to visit with you again as I enjoyed it immensely the last time( which has been a few years)!

Cool video, thanks for making and posting it. That's an interesting, complicated, large and costly power feed but it's also a piece of history. I would assume most of those machines had their original power feeds removed by their owners when the infinitely variable Servo type came to be. Assuming my above assumption is correct, have you considered contacting a machinery museum (if one even exists) to see if they'd be interested in that machine? It may be a tax break for your estate if it were donated (later of course). I've never seen a Southbend Mill in person nevermind that type of power feed. Surely someone somewhere is interested in preserving and sharing such machines rather than it rusting away in a basement somewhere or sold for scrap. Just a thought that may or may not have crossed your mind. Thanks Mr. Pete for all of your videos, they are appreciated more than you know!

Good morning MrPete. Good video, some complicated mechanisms for their times for sure. I noticed your Clausing horizontal table has the same geared crank device as my Clausing 8530 vertical mill. Is it a two speed, normal and 4X? That's the side I intend to mount my Vevor power feed onto, just haven't gotten around to figuring out how. When I do I'll try to document it well and forward the results.

I have a power feed for my Index mill. It still sits in the large bottom drawer of my toolbox. I'm not even sure if all of the pieces are there. I don't use it enough to make it worth investigating. I have a universal mill from 1948. It has the gear box at the same place as the bridge port and a similar driveshaft. It dosent have the long gearbox its more under the table (like the second mill) and you start the feed from a lever in front of the table. It is belt driven from the motor with 2 different size of pulley (2 speed v-belt change) then from that spindle via a 2 speed gearbox to a flat belt with 3 possitions (speeds). And from the main spindle a v belt drives the feed gear box that have 6 speeds. So basically when you change the tool/spindle speed you also change the table feed. Complicated?

Actually I did notice the woman, but mostly because she's wearing open toe shoes in the shop. One of the places I worked at when I was in high school, the secretary/assistant used to have to talk to people in the shop and she wore heels usually open toe. My stepfather was was managing the company at the time made her either just wear boots, or have a pair of boots to swap to when she had to go out in the shop. I'm not one of the safety sally's, but I do take it seriously, so the dress on the model wouldn't fly either, since it could get hung up in the works too. Personally, she would have been more alluring if they had drawn her dressed for the shop, and not a night at the opera.
