In this installment of his series of videos on how speakers work, John DeVore talks about the "brain" of a speaker and explains what a crossover does, and how it works. Using the little DeVore Fidelity gibbon 3XL as a model.

You know someone REALLY understands something when they have the ability to capture the essence in such a concise and engaging manner. Thank you sir, just what I was looking for!

Thanks, John. Excellent explanation of a crossover network, but easier said than done, or at least done well. I’ve really enjoyed your vids, and am so glad you started a channel of your own. Wether it be music recommendations or technical information, it’s all been great, especially from someone as respected as yourself. Please keep your channel going, if times allows, and once again, thank you, John. Be well and stay safe! 🎶👍🔊🙂

Wow. New to your channel. This reminds me of the passion me and my friends had from the mid 80s through th mid 90s. Thanks for all this.

Thanks, this gives consumer like me a perspective on what effort was put in to our beloved speakers and that's the gibbon nine for me. Planning to make a youtube sound test of the nines to somewhat show off their magic.

This is the best hifi info on KZfaq. Guttenberg is also great if you need guidance on what to buy, but DeVore explains how things work and I love that. Although I need to watch a couple more times to get all of it.

Thanks John, I appreciate the explanation greatly. I can / do design and build power amplifiers ~ but ~ building speakers is such an art... one that truly escapes me. I appreciate what you do and your stellar reputation as a craftsman...

@@DeVOREFIDELITY John, a little late to this series, but do you intend to do another episode on speaker enclosure tuning that you referenced in the previous video? This series is very helpful and getting a lens into your views on things is awesome. As someone that can’t afford a pair of your speakers at this point in my life, it’s still nice to get a peek behind the curtain.

Xover also prevents parralel frequencies...which prevents drivers wired in parralel being ' seen ' by the amp that way ( prevents huge impedance drop )

would like to hear your thought about impedance corrections since you want speakers to be on the dynamic side of the spectrum. Do you avoid them at all costs? What are your opinions?

In your speakers, what kind of crossover do you use (Butterworth,Bessel,Linkwitz-Riley),and are they first, second, third or fourth order? Thank you for the reply!

A passive crossover is an evil amalgamation of capacitors, inductors, and resistors designed to keep the Hi-Fi industry permanently suspended in the 1970’s. Because Studio Engineers and the Pro Sound industry know how damned good DSP is.

I don't see an issue putting a small value resistor in series yes your changed its impedance but the impedance is changed anyway in the operation of the driver when it's working, what value are you talking about in parallel of the resistor would have to be high?
