Ever since the 1969 riots on the streets outside New York City’s Stonewall Inn, L.G.B.T.Q. communities have gathered there to express their joy, their anger, their pain and their power.
Few places are so tightly identified with the birth of a movement as the Stonewall Inn and the streets that surround it, in the downtown Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village. This month marks 50 years since the Stonewall riot, which galvanized a half-century of activism and agitation for L.G.B.T. rights and made Stonewall a recurring stage for public protest, grieving and celebration.
Cheryl Furjanic’s new Op-Doc, “Stonewall: The Making of a Monument” traces that history, exploring the process by which a chaotic street fight in protest of police brutality has been engraved into history in the form of a national monument. Furjanic’s film, built from a chorus of voices and archival footage, is also a case study in how mainstream acceptance can, ironically, be a mixed blessing for political movements, as people struggle to control their own history.

If it wasn’t for these people, I would have been afraid for what is in store for my transgender son. The path ahead is still being forged, but my hope is that my son has a place in this world without discrimination and hate. I won’t stop fighting for peace, acceptance, and a happy life for him until I no longer can draw breath.

I am standing in the gym, bawling. Adoption is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child. I could care less when someone tells me "we're pregnant!" But when I hear someone adopted a baby, I am like "I want to hear EVERY detail of your adoption story and making your family whole!" I couldn't care for you, so I gave you an opportunity to go to a family that could.

I will never understand how someone can have a problem with someones sexual orientation?? I was brought up in a catholic house, Im married with a son, And when that topic comes up saying it’s “wrong” wrong how why are people so worried about someone elses sexual preference why do people think they can dictate who someone chooses to love? In 1969 there were 3 TV networks none of which reported on Stonewall. The country depended on those networks and their local city newspaper and maybe the state newspaper of record. If any of those newspapers carried a story about Stonewall, it would have been a filler or 'news of the weird'. I only found out about it because I was in college and found the story in the Village Voice at the college library. I don't think that most of the country really found out about it until the student groups at colleges started having Stonewall anniversary events.

One more little big point: Anita Hill, beauty-pageant winner and known merely as a spokeswoman for Oranges via Advertisements, became a Spokeswoman who declared: “Homosexuals should NOT be allowed to teach our children! “ Yet, because women were fired upon committing the ‘Act of Marriage’...who HAD taught America’s children, in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s and 1950’s...?! This was a profound coming together of these #ChristianFundamentalists...#Fascism, right now.

I grew up well with bio parents yet with growing pains like everyone....In my life I have met some really accomplished as well as regular people who were adopted, so I think people should just be grateful that they met up with parents who wanted them and were in the position to care for them. I have also met people who grew up with abusive biological parents. Melodramas are just a waste of time. Always move on and pay it forward. Reliving difficult circumstances is futile. The past is done, the future unknown...all we have is the moment of now...🤓

hey Ava, wrong video. But to your comment- You are not adopted, you do not understand. And I did not see anyone in the video talking bad about their adoption parents. It just is a great loss and a traumatic experience. No matter how well you will have it with you adopting parents. And as a Korean and not white in a white family and community must also be an alienating experience or at least has the potential to do so. Being adopted myself - I think it is important to be able to talk about your experiences. I appreciated the docu vey much.
