Additional Note From Djinnfor: As several commenters have mentioned, Cocytus is most likely based on a race of the creatures from D&D, the Gelugons. They are a race of Ice Devils native to the Nine Hells of Baator (which was also fashioned after Dante's Inferno), specifically the 9th circle of hell, Cocytus. While they only have two arms, they have many similar features to Cocytus, including ice magic, a long polearm weapon, and a tail they use in battle which slows the opponent on hit. However, it seems he may have just used them for loose aesthetic inspiration as there are also plenty of differences, both lore (e.g. they're devils like Demiurge, not insects, which would normally make them inherently evil aligned) and mechanical (e.g. his tail doesn't appear to slow on hit).

I know it's been a long time since the video was published but , talking about insects some colony base insects species change their biology to fit the kind of job they need to perform like bees and ants, all of them part from the same base form but change to warrior, worker or queen depending on external factors like pheromones .

I would also like to point out that Cocytus' appearance is very similar to that of the Ice-devil from D&D. Couple that with its abilities and I think we a reference for the design of the top tier insectoid daddy, Cocytus.

If I am not mistaken that at 1:23 is when I hear the main theme of Overlord the video game. A game that may well be suited for our favorite anime and Ruler Of The Frozen Glaciers.

For another Overlord video, some suggestions are: 1) Perhaps an analysis or a closer look at the Dragon lords, the Eight Greed Kings (Yggdrasil players?), or the Thirteen Heroes (though I know we don't really have much info for that, even in the light novels) 2) Who is Victim? (I also know that there might be a lack in info here as well, but maybe enough for a video) 3) A closer look at the Slane Theocracy: their strengths and influence, etc. (The Black Scripture? Zesshi?) 4) A method to create a Deep Dive VRMMORPG, create Yggdrasil, and play it within our lifetime. (Or perhaps a method to extend our lifespan or gain immortality to be able to live long enough to play this potentially amazing game that doesn't exist yet.)

I was thinking about the insect like races in ydrasil (sorry if i wrote it wrong) but my theory was that you could choose a basic insect or choose out of a select few base insects (like a more defence, attack, magic... focussed base insects) and that they can promote in it but that they are also influenced by their environment like cocytus leveled in cold environments or like kyouhukou would be leveled in a more damp area where cockroaches would be more effective

I think it's more likely that there are multiple Insect starting classes like how there is multiple Undead classes

Interesting thing about dnd and how it relates to this, the ice devil is actually a mid-high Cr fiend that has the head of an insect and a long tail, really similar to Cocytus, and is usually seen wielding some kind of weapon, usually a spear. In fact, in the official 5e art of the ice devil, it is shown wearing golden bracelets and other jewelry, really similar to how Cocytus was dressed during his fight against the lizard men.

I suspect Cocytus likely started as an Ant based Insect, mainly due to the concept of a "warrior ant" , which would make sense as it would give him bonus' to the Fighter and Lord concepts you talked about later on, Ant's after all are the most coordinated insect species on the planet , and their Soldier's known to be at least 2x as big and nasty as the more common Drones

I think the Insectoid race may be a reference to the Kreen race of Dungeons and Dragons, which has many, many subtypes which are unfortunately largely obscure from 3.5 on, other than the Thri-Kreen.

So in Pathfinder, a dnd derivative, there's a devil species called Gelugon. They are ice and insectoid based and look remarkably like Cocyutus. I always initially assumed he was one. I believe that the Gelugon also features in actual Dnd and looks more or less the same. So I think he was based on this type of Devil Edit: I now see I am further behind the discussion than I thought. Apologies.

Just watched this anime over the weekend, finished today as a matter of fact.

I think he is an insect chimera if anything, like it seems really similar to that classic form with human face,lion body n scorpion tail.

Ani, I just had this thought. Maybe the levels that are unknown are simply insect. Each level of insect allows them to pick and choose feature's they want. So Duke and entoma being relativly bases of insects would only need two and Cocytus would need ten for his various traits. Just a thought.

one set of underlins of his isn't insect type there's a bunch of snow queens ( level 80s ) guarding his flour ( in the side story of passing info among male guardians Ainz wanted to get all the males to enjoy and bath together ) . Tho it isn't mention what other types he controls . Demigue has more info about his minions in the light novel and anime tho . Aura and her younger sister has tons of animals creatures type on their floor which includes 2 level 90s dragons ( in the side story above Mare told the librarian not to take their away to kill them and make stuff which the librarian agreeds as all inhabitants in nazerick is not to be harmed by Ainz order ) . Shaltier has a bunch of vampire brides level 80s plus her summons household which we saw in first season . victim floor 8 is a death trap to any and all he/she ( I don't know it's sex sorry 😳 ) has an over powered world boss type under its control Rubedo and support magic from the leader of the pledietes maids with is overly powered support magic as well tho she's in charge of her own pocket dimension to guard the staff of Ainz and not to interfere in battle , victim itself is so weak a normal person can one hit it but it comes with devastating effects ( with that in mind you kind of can picture why 1500 players got crushed in the 8th floor ) . not much info on gargantuan floor ( huge stone golem ) .
