In lesser hands, Data would turn quickly into an unstoppable 'Terminator' type character, but what made the character so enduring was the fact that instead of being a murder machine, he was more focused on studying music, painting, writing poetry etc In first contact, he basically becomes the Terminator at the end, even down to the exposed skull. Even before Picard they were straying away from what made TNG great.

Pro tip to Kurtzman-tier writers: If your character has many times normal human strength, is highly durable, and quick, all those fancy martial arts moves are entirely unnecessary. In fact, if your character employs all those flamboyant kicks and flips, it actually makes the character appear physically weaker, because the audience understands those moves are used to overcome a lack of physical strength in the upper body by leveraging lower body strength and torque to deliver far more powerful blows than what the body would normally be capable of. TNG writers understood that strength in combat is communicated in five ways: 1) Your character doesn't bother to block or dodge attacks because those attacks are incapable of causing harm. 2) Your character effortlessly throws opponents across the room 3) Your character delivers devastating blows with little care or effort. The juxtaposition between a seemingly weak attack and the devastation it wreaks on opponents communicates, very effectively, that your character has extreme physical strength. Even a light backhand sends an opponent reeling backwards. 4) Your character's movements are not stopped, or even slowed by opponents. 5) Your character can grasp hard enough to cause extreme pain, or completely immobilize an opponent, and with little effort.

What made this finale ridiculous in my opinion was this detail of their big stupid threat! They are enhanced, biological creations, that can be seen with the Golem: it looks like a clone of Judge Dredd (the movie with Stallone).....but at no time do we see cybernetic elements: which is ridiculous because Data explains it at various moments: they are artificial, cybernetic, they have nothing biological. ...as opposed to Maddox's synthetics, which are more like the delusion of perfection that Dr. Arik Soong dreamed of with his augmented ones.... basically, they have taken over Blade Runner, without understanding its meaning, nor why the human/android boundary was destroyed to make them biological in the movie..... simply because the movie Blade Runner talks about human, about how we can take away the humanity of individuals because they are born artificially, cybernetically and biologically improved (so improved) .... but they are not real Androids, they are called that way because it allows them to have the public opinion against them: they say it in the movie: nothing allows to differentiate a human from a "replicant", except the lack of empathy. ...why? because they are biologically human.....so if we follow the same logic with STP, the Synthetics are biologically improved humans......broadly speaking, nothing to do with Androids, but they tried a good repompage of Blade Runner, without understanding anything of the movie.

I always thought Data was grinning like that because he was trying (too hard) to seem less intimidating. "Do not fear me. I am kind and friendly!" I think the argument could be made that you're looking at different decades here. Think 60s vs 90s. Tech changes over time. At the time of TNG, Android tech was in its infancy and Data struggled with being a prototype android - there's even an episode where his creator creates an emotional chip for him but dies before he can install it. In Picard, it's decades later, and so you're exploring a universe where Android tech has progressed a ton. It's like comparing computers decades apart, yes the ones in the future will be way better.

That said, I totally agree Picard flies in the face of what made Star Trek what it was. It has NEVER been about the violence, violence has only ever been used when it made sense, to add gravity to a situation. Even then, almost every time it ends up being the threat of violence and not the real thing. Look at how many times TNG climax has them facing a hostile ship where they might have to destroy each other, and how almost every time Picard finds a diplomatic solution. Violence in Star Trek shouldn't be spectacle.

@@nikitazkolibri5560 The writing is a major problem with the show, as they are not consistent. I would not mind if as much if it was different from the series. Otherwise, I would be a hypocrite since they change things in the TNG era compared to the Orginal series, such as the Klingons or technology. Things need to be updated to keep the story consistent as they could do things with better technology or technique. Not to mention, we have a better understanding of things and realize that things need to change to consist of true science or make them stand out better. The problem is they are not consistent within STD or Picard, for both show that it is very much a case of the power of the plot, if not by how awesome it is. And not even we made a new procedure or new technology to get out of a jam like the old series that is consistent with their technology. It is, as you said, unless you look at it with mindless fun, you won't have fun, for it really pushes the audience's acceptance of disbelief in the nth degree. Because they don't understand that the "Androids" of Blade Runner are Augments, not androids: in the movie, they are humans, an augmented biological creation: It's easier to make people believe that we are killing "machines" than artificially created humans, like the Augments of Star Trek. This would explain some things: the fickle physical strength of synthetics, the fact that they can die from a fork in the eye, bleeding ect.... they are not Cybernetic beings, they are not Androids, they are Augments, biologically advanced beings, improved via cybernetics: Cyborgs at the limit...but not Androids! The movie Blade Runner takes this side to destroy the border with the human, precisely because it asks the question, at the same time on the Ethics but also on the humanity of such a creation.

@Billy WilliamSynthetics are not biological beings, they are creations made of silicon, they are androids totally, nothing to do with the improved biological creations of Blade Runner, which can reproduce with humans, and therefore are human, CQDF. If we look at the background of Blade Runner, we create human beings, living, calling them "Androids" with what it implies (being considered as a machine because they live only 6 years and have superior physical abilities), in order to hide that the only and last resource used is human....(Blade Runner depicts a world where the resources are so exhausted, that they force the departure to the outer colonies). This absence of the androids was a big drawback to K. Dick's novel, but it implies an interesting reflection in the movie. The only problem is that the director has obviously never understood what the writer of the script wanted to express.... in view of his outbursts on the subject of Deckard. The famous synths of soong are like the "Replicants" of Blade Runner or the Clones of Judge Dredd: Totally biological, which is a nonsense towards Data.

What is black goo? The entities of Blade Runner are biological, but nothing is explained in the film on how or from what. But it is said in the movie that they are indistinguishable, except psychologically and empathically, from a human, so that means they are genetically indistinguishable from humans: so they are humans.

When Data first creates Lal, Picard makes an offhand comment about how dangerous it might be to have her wandering around and uses the phrase: "with the strength of ten men". While Picard might not be being literal, it at least gives the impression that he thought Data was approximately 10 times stronger than a human. Given Klingons and Vulcans are canonically three times stronger than a human (despite several episodes where human characters manage to defeat them in fist fights), and Data is still able to completely overwhelm Vulcan and Klingons, this seems about reasonable.
@Pepesmall
@Pepesmall 3 жыл бұрын
I always assumed the humans winning was more based on technique, sort of in the way that a smaller human with practiced technique can take down a human of much greater physical strength, like despite the Klingons being a warrior race they seemed to fight based more on emotion and sheer violence (except for worf, who had the practiced technique of humans.) Beating Vulcans only really makes sense through guile (which of course, we’ve seen used to expert effect in star fleet) but an android of data’s capabilities should be able to easily defeat any humanoid, even 10 at a time, given his improved strength speed dexterity and mental speed. An android would be able to simply think and move too fast to ever face any danger from a single humanoid

Romulans and Vulcans for that matter have been depicted repeatedly with effectively superstrength as well, it should also be kept in mind that these are not fully synthetic androids but some kind of biological hybrid. So it actually makes a lot of sense that the only biological lifeforms we actually see physically contesting with androids are Borg and races with superior strength. Like I get that a lot of people forget how strong Romulans and Vulcans actually are because they’re always portrayed as more mental characters.

Soji and her twin sister who died in the pilot seem to be the only impressive synths. They may have been the masterpieces from Soong like Data was. Also, Data was never made to be a killer machine. Those robots were still JUST robots. And as JUST robots...they destroyed a lot of shit. It makes sense that they were used as just very capable robots... because that's what they were. They weren't on the level of data or those robots that became sentient..that he made an argument for. They were just following orders and doing their job just as any other computer. So..not slaves. I think it is understandable that the aside from Soji and her sister, most androids in Pickard are actually equivalent to humans. The original android from TNG was created as a "high performance tool" for assist missions, and due to Data tech innovation, he were granted a "human" status (oh, that famous trial, it was amazing). Soji and her sister actually carry the "task" of being their (new androids) leaders, hence the need for them to be able to defend themselves with high skill levels, but the rest of them were actually created IN HUMAN'S IMAGE, which was the original dream that Data had.... To be HUMAN, not more than it. So yeah, Data is strong AF, SOJI and her sister are strong AF, the rest of them are just high tech pleb.

I love how throwing someone two feet in the air causes them to fall from 9 feet in the next frame.

Remember the Kurtzman rule: all lore and logic can be disregarded if you want a scene where a Romulan ninja kicks someone in the face

Wasn’t the main difference that Data was closer to a robot by having been built like a machine with non organic matter as steel and so on while the androids in Picard were more like the augments? They weren’t humans that had received genetic enhancements but rather augments build from ground up, made up of organic matter. Organic matter still has limits inferior to non organic matter like metals.. Aside the androids with non human appearance, Soji and her sister stood for some time in a society that has contactless scanners and where androids are forbidden which means that they were indistinguishable from regular humans. It’s only the secret programming that separated them from regular humans. They are like the gen 3 synths from Fallout where alive, they pass every test as a human, only when killed and the head opened, you can find a component which doesn’t belong there.

Let's all appreciate the fact that Brent Spiner's Data was better in every conceivable way & didn't rely on trendy, overused modern Dub-step/techno music to look cool & do what he does best. *it doesn't make sense* Preaching to the choir, man.
