This shield is used mainly when storming apartments. Criminals mainly use either Makarov, Kalashnikov, or smoothbore rifles. That is, the shield performs its task 100%. And the operator will not have time to get tired, because storming the premises is not a marathon. But there are other shields.

This shield isnt used by regular army...it's used by Speztnaz Storm Groups Like the Alfa (A), Vityaz (B) , Vympel Group and FSB and more or less by Omon...the 🟥 is ment as psychological effect so that person aims and shoots at it during a firefight...newer shields have a bright flashing strobe light for that instead.

In Russia, protective equipment based on ballistic fabric is decommissioned after five years. Since it is believed that the fabric loses its properties over time. If this shield is 5 or more years old, then it is impossible to say exactly how it performed when it was new.
@karwashblark7499

"it is believed" Do they have empirical evidence for this? I'm skeptical. Even if there were some sort of measurable degradation over that short a timeframe, it would probably just *barely* be measurable. Definitely not the kinda degradation to where it would have stopped a higher caliber beforehand, but now it can't.

@@karwashblark7499 I read that after the collapse of the USSR, the armed forces were in degradation, and they bought equipment from the cheapest materials, and then really low-quality aramid fibers were susceptible to aging. Charlie, hello. I've watched a lot of your videos, you've done a great job. I would just like to correct you, ballistic shields such as "Vant-LM" and "Vant-VM" are not used by army units. They are used by the internal troops of the FSB and OMON, the so-called "anti-terror groups" aimed at countering gangs and terrorists, respectively, they are designed to protect against fragments of homemade call devices and light weapons.

A few misconceptions here. The Vant is/was only used by anti-terror/police units. Not regulars. The Vant is an old shield dating back to the mid 2000s. Top tier FSB units now use titanium shields which are lvl4 rated and will likely stop 30-06 AP. look up the Armokom "Veer6". Cool vid anyway. Thanks!

Hello from Russia! As always, GT, great video. First ballistic test on VANT I've ever seen - many thanks for such content! And, well, if anyone is wondering, here's some info on the VANT: (I'm into all our police stuff and shields are no exception) FORT Technologies stuff are almost exclusively made for police usage. And ВАНТ-ВМ (eng. VANT-VM; the one in the vid) is no exception. It's more then 10 years old by now and was essentially the first full-size shield for FSB/SOBR units. Yes, there were shields like Забор-С/Забор-М (eng. Zabor-S/Zabor-M; goggle them up, its ridiculous), but judging from the fact that I've only seen them on the training photos of regional units, whom are always underfunded, they were either too impractical or came up at the same time as VANT. The shield has level 4 ballistic protection (level 5 pre-2014 reform) and should stop an LPS gz round out of SVD from 5-10 meters. And, considering 7.62x54R is loosely the same as .308, we can see that it can - M80 proves that. The red velcro in the center is meant to attract the attackers eye - storming of the house usually goes with a lot of suppressive fire, shouts and overall intimidation of an enemy - sum it up with the fact that VANT is usually equipped with a strobe and you'll get an enemy who'll only see a constantly flashing light and a big red square entering a room). He'll probably shoot it, not something else. About the obsolescence of the technologies used: VANT is by far the most produced shield in Russia and it still does its job greatly - so why change anything? Yes, we already have more modern shields (by FORT themselves and by NPP Klass), but you should understand that replacing something in anything that is state-owned, especially in Russia, is EXTREMELY difficult - we have a massive corruption problem in every branch of the state. Plus we're talking about military and police here - they are very conservative. About the weight: IIRC, FORT made special attachment system for bulletproof vests that has MOLLE on them. It comes with the shield. And also consider that police guys are more buffed than the army guys. And yes, the VANT was and is used in the military in relatively small numbers - our army has different SOF's after all. They are used by FSB and SOBR teams in Ukraine rn.

@Cragified 2 жыл бұрын
It came about on the tail end of the 'battle rifle' days. WW1 still had engagement ranges >800m so they used a potent rounds at long ranges as the M1 Garand development started in 1928 and it made logistical sense to use the ammunition that the U.S. both had stockpiles of and the capacity to produce in mass. WWII however proved that newer infantry tactics and engagements would be at much shorter distances and a lot more fluid so the 30-06 was extreme overkill. Which is why the M1 Carbine was quite popular among troops that could get their hands on one. Lighter, could carry a lot more ammo. I still enjoy using the 30-06 for hunting but in military use the 7.62x51 is more then enough. Interestingly the commercial .308 is actually quite a bit hotter then the military 7.62x51. While 5.56 is hotter then the standard commercial .223
