In this video I think I do a decent job of explaining how a sway bar works and only briefly get into suspension setup philosophy. Any constructive criticism or questions, please leave them in the comments section below. Thank you!

One good way of demonstrating how sway bars function is by standing straight with legs slightly apart. When you bend one knee, you tend to become off-balanced as the other leg is still straight. Now if you have a sway bar, that is connected to both legs, if one knee is bent, the sway bar would force the other knee to bend too, thereby keeping you balanced and your body upright.

The outside suspension compresses as inside suspension gets lighter (expands). Sway bars are engineered to resist & balance asymmetrical compression to more desirable amounts via a twisting force as a feedback-loop. A turn transfers _x % of load:_ The CoG-change + centripetal forces' sums to dynamically spread across an axle transferring more load to the outer wheel. The law of conservation requires that (on avg) the sum of weight across an axle be equal to the weight over the axle. The center of gravity's transition however, can be mitigated; this is to maximize PSI over the inside-tire. While the PSI over a contact patch determines friction between most materials, tires are different: As force increases over a tire, it will provide a lower 'ROI' of the weight's investment. As force decreases over a tire, it provides a HIGHER 'ROI' to the weight's investment. (this is one way a sway bar can be helpful). You want roll, squat & dive; you just don't want all its travel consumed (except F1 who use bump stops). Tires also act like shocks; higher PSI = stiffer 'shocks' and lower = softer. A sway bar thick enough to resist all torsion would cause both side's suspension to compress equally. But apparently, it can also make the inside wheel lift in some circumstances (rumor?). A sway bar's utility is increases agility: Stiffer suspension + sway bars TRADE stability for peak traction. The weight experienced by either side is a function of Physics Laws, and: THE LAWS OF PHYSICS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO REPEAL NOR SUSPENSION

One thing to mention, stiffer springs are not entirely a replacement for a sway bar. The sway bar does *nothing* when both tires are compressed the same amount, for example, on a hill, speed bump, or elevation change, the sway bar doesn't do anything because both sides are coming up or down together on their own.

so when u "upgrade" a front or rear sway bar, are you just getting a thicker metal or different type of metal so that it doesnt flex as much? also, for a front wheel drive car would it be a good idea to get a stiffer rear bar to reduce understeer?
@goddom
@goddom 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. Typically you are getting a thicker bar. I suppose you could get a different material, but that would be pretty uncommon. Correct, a stiffer rear bar will help with understeer - not always the case, but generally the case. When doing some endurance racing with a FWD car we opted for a stiffer rear bar to reduce understeer and it worked well.

Hi Eddie, What happens if you change the positions on a adjustable swaybar from side to side. So you set one side in the 1st hole & the other side in the 2nd hole. What will be the result & why would this be an advantage or not?
@goddom
@goddom 4 жыл бұрын
This could be done. There are some companies that provide adjustable sway bar links that allow you to pre-load the sway bar in some fashion. This would depend on the track - it may or may not provide some advantage. Off the top of my head, if you have a particularly tricky corner just before the the only straight - preloading the sway bar so you can take that corner even 1-2mph faster will net you 2-3x more miles at the end of that straight and a second or so of time. I am making some wild generalizations here, so don't take these numbers to seriously because it depends on the car, the straight, the rest of the track. I am not very familiar with circle track - they have their own black magic for suspension set-ups - but I could see where there is a constant turn, you could pre-load the sway bar and it would help pretty significantly in this situation. I hope this helps and if I wasn't clear feel free to ask more questions I will try and get to them quickly.

I have some questions...I recently lowered my car, with a suspension kit, and at the time of doing my research before buying it, I came across 2 mods I don't think I quite understand: adjustable drop links and different size bushes for the anti roll bar. Would appreciate the enlightment lol Also, I have a fwd car with a solid rear axle, does that mean I have a lot more room to stiffen up the front at all?
@goddom
@goddom 2 жыл бұрын
Adjustable drop links help with fitment and you can, if necessary, add some preload to the sway bar. Usually not necessary. Different bushing sizes might also be more of a fitment, not sure off hand the benefit of bushing size. As for the sold rear on the back, it all depends on how stiff the car is right now. If the car is a bit oversteery right now, then you can stiffen up the front, but if you are getting understeer than you need a stiffer rear. The sold rear axle doesn't change the need for a sway bar in itself because the sway bar controls weight transfer as the body rolls in a turn.

in the most simplest explanation... when the car turns to the left , the left side of the vehicle starts to LIFT UP and the right side starts to press down. which causes potential roll. with the sway bar, when the car turns to the left , the left side of the vehicle starts to LIFT UP but the sway bar tries to keeps it from doing that because its solidly connected to the RIGHT. pressure from the right help keeps the left side down through the sway bar.

The only thing I would say is over steer and under steer are fundamentals of steering and suspension geometry, so the anti roll bar does not effect thise principals. What you're actually describing with that incorrect term is a loss of traction as you have exceeded the coefficents of friction on the tyre! Yep, a mouthful, better described as skew or a skid. Any loss of traction is technically a skid. 🙂 The best way to think about over and under steer is where the Akermann intersection is (where the lines from KPand steering joint cross) if it is before the rear axle or anti-akermann, it will under steer, if it is behind the axle it will over steer.this will be measurable and seen at 1mph (you need to avoid tyre deformation to get a true result).

so the sway arm is connected in a way that shortens the length of the struts evenly against lateral forces of the of the body movement, by basically compressing the strut on the opposite wheel to keep the car level through a turn.
@goddom
@goddom 3 жыл бұрын
Well, its trying to use the resistance of the strut on the opposite side to help resist the compression of the strut on the outside of the turn. Which does lead to some compression of the strut on the inside wheel

So I lowered my car a while ago and found out that sway bar links need changing as well. I used BC Racing coil overs and dropped it about 2” total, and it feels just fine. I want it to handle, that’s the thing. It seems to be great in corners, considering I’ve pre-loaded both sway bars by not shortening the links how would that affect it?
@goddom
@goddom 3 жыл бұрын
Well, if both links are the same length then it doesn't pre-load the sway bar. You can pre-load it by having asymmetrical links, but that might only help you at certain tracks. But having links that are to long may prevent it from working properly in certain situations. Depends on a lot of things though like spring rates, and body roll. If it feels fine, not running on anything you are probably OK for now.
@dielaughing73
@dielaughing73 6 ай бұрын
If you've dropped by 2" you've probably changed the swaybar geometry somewhat. The bars are most effective when the 'arms' are horizontal (at normal ride height) and the end links are perpendicular to the arms. You might need shorter end links to keep the geometry as close to ideal as possible. Adjustable links are beneficial because they can be fine-tuned to make sure there's no preload on the bars. If you adjust your ride height, corner balance etc there will always be some degree of preload with fixed-length links. Might not be an issue but if you do any performance driving it's probably worth the investment.

Hello teacher , I am the one that described my Kia forte 2019 (ONLY 16000 miles ) with chirping sound in your other video I hope you remember me ??? i told you that when i turn the car aggressively into right ( especially in bumpy road ) i hear the chirping noise in my driver side) . you kindly advised me that i would tell the Kia dealership to check my "sway bar bushings" before they change my struts . Today , I just found out they did NOT changed my sway bar bushings because the technician told me that he ruled it out ( the sway bar bushing's potential problem) by disabling "the sway bar from the left and right end of the car ' and he said that he could still hear the same chirping noise when he drove the car, after disabling the sway-bar , so IT COULD NOT BE THE SWAY BAR BUSHINGS .... Is disabling the sway bar from tiers rule out the problems with " bushing rubber ) ??? I think they were lazy and they did not want to change my sway bar bushings ...After watching this video , I demanded the kia dealership to change the bushings ....ARE they telling me the truth ??? Can they rule out the potential chirping noise coming of the sway bar bushing by disabling the sway bar form right and left ends ???? base on your great explanation, i told them the bushing still CAN MAKE NOISE even if sway bar is disabled . dear teacher , am i right ???? Well it depends on how they disabled it. Do sway bars work better on fwd or rwd or both?
@goddom
@goddom 3 жыл бұрын
They work on both, you just tend to do different things. So a FWD car tends to understeer more than a RWD car - so you may want to add a stiffer sway bar to the rear to make the car a little more balanced and vice versa. Not always the case, but this might give you a little bit of a starting point. The difference is all relative. So you can put bigger sway bars on both ends of the car, but maybe a slightly stiffer one in the front or the rear. I hope this helps.

I recently changed wheel size on my Chrysler 300 18220 s now my tires are wearing crazy my front driver sideis wearing on the outside real bad real fast that passenger side has a little wear on the outside and the rear passenger is war real bad on the inside and the driver rear is it's okay well that have something to do with a sway bar
@goddom

Probably not, it sounds like an alignment issue. It might be because of the wheel change threw something out.

I am confused at 7:22 because here is a video saying the sway bar can be twisted like that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKx3nr1_17S4eXk.html
@goddom
@goddom 2 жыл бұрын
Kwunmei - what he is showing in the video - the bar twisting, which it does do because of where its attached to the car, but I think the diagram he shows will confuse people because the sway bar ends both want to go in the same direction. In the diagram XF Motorsports is showing, the 150kg pushing down is the outside wheel, the 150kg pushing up, is the inside wheel - the sway bar is going to try and lift that inside wheel, which takes the weight off it. So the sway bar gets twisted, but the ends aren't trying to go in two different directions. Thats why in his next diagrams he talks about the weight coming off the inside front tire, and more weight is applied to the outside front tire. I hope this makes sense.

was just looking for that new sway song, Incidentally put in new neothrane bushes, hated it straight away. Buy a bigger sway bar match them Front and Back. Rubber is much better

the clamps on the bushing it should be very tight no movement whatsoever. The reason why the sway bar is a an actual spring for each side it’s not meant to move on the other side because the spring on the strut will push it down to stabilise that side. so the middle of the sway bar is not moving. That’s my theory!!!! Thanks

What about when both wheels go over a bump then? I'll tell you: both ends of the swaybar go up because it pivots at the bushings. Otherwise you couldn't drive anywhere!

I think you're too focused on the outside wheel in your explanation. The way I like to look at it, your wheel assemblies are always in some state of compression. They are floating. If their load is lightened, the suspension will expand, if their load gets heavier, the suspension will contract. So basically what the sway bar does is creates a connection between the right and left side suspension. If one side compresses, the bar twists to compress the other side. Now you are accurate in saying that this does serve to correct the outside wheel, but that's actually skipping a step in my opinion. The more important feature in my opinion is the compression of the inside of the turn. The twist of the bar pushes the assembly up (or rather, pushes up the equillibrium of your tire assembly and suspension) and this allows the inside to be closer to the ground which helps to correct the weight distribution problem.

Instead of a sway bar, has any car manufacturer company created a suspension that makes a car body bank towards the side it is turning on.... Similar to a motorcycle when it turns....
@goddom
@goddom Жыл бұрын
Yes, some car manufacturers use active suspension to counter the body roll. They probably don't lean in like a motorcycle but they help to better distribute the weight of the car.

What causes engine vibration. My tweaker sister has hired her dope head mechanic to "repair" my dad's car and bill him of his money though he is a senior citizen and it's a criminal charge. Response would be great
@goddom

Hmmm, a number of things can. A misfire - usually from old/bad spark plugs - is the most likely culprit. If they replaced the spark plugs recently, they may not have gapped them properly. Luckily this is usually a fairly straightforward repair and will not cause damage to the engine. If you tell me what work the guy was supposed to do it might help me figure what might be wrong.

@@goddom they "replaced the plugs. Spacing idk? But I know about engine mount brackets. I think she tried lying to my dad about the sway which is bs from my understanding as that handles tire traction across the car amoung other things.
@goddom
@goddom 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, probably not sway bar. It sounds like the spark plugs are the issue. They need to be replaced or checked to make sure the wires/coils are attached properly.

is there something that is better than a sway bar? say electronic suspension
@goddom
@goddom 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, there are some new electric suspensions that are better than sway bars that sense when the car is turning and compensates for the lean of the car by adjusting individual shocks/dampers. But for most cars, they still use the cheaper sway bar option.
