How synthetic media, or deepfakes, could soon change our world

Synthetic media, better known as deepfakes, could be a goldmine for filmmakers. But the technology has already terrorized women who have had their faces inserted into pornography. And it could potentially disrupt society. Bill Whitaker reports.

It's not that difficult. If you look at enough of them, you will be able to tell if something is real or deepfake. Usually there is a moment of glitch in all of them. Ps: I work with computer vision technology :)

What is the exact meaning of someone's identity? Is it merely someone's appearance? Their SSN? Their gender? Etc. Is someone's "identity" permanent or everchanging? What if someone is a public figure and they fall under the umbrella of public domain? Things are very muddy, not so clear and there are no easy answers legally or ethically to combat something as ephemeral as "Identity" Just something to ponder.

I've actually been in the process of making a video covering many of these same topics and more. Sometimes I forget that this is such a relevant topic other people are rightly looking into it too. One of the things I'm personally concerned about is not only the creation of media that can fake the now. But also media that can fake the past. In a world where we are constantly trying to dig up things from the past to try to contextualize it, what will happen if somebody create something fake but so unbelievably convincing that we are put in a awkward situation or it even gets passed as real. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

what im more concerned about is a 'diluted' nation.. nobody really has the 'monopoly' of truth so the past can always be questioned. majority of the population just agreeing silently to the story told by the elitist or some beguiling mouth and thats how you create history. im even questioning now if history is even that important aside from science facts, the rest like politics and the likes are just crap. poticians get voted just by their name in history and not by credibility. anyway whats needed is honing ones perception to able to diligently seive all these varied opposing ideas and information. individually, we become our own feeder of truth and identity with the advent of technology, we have the capacity to become globally aware and choose our own virtual world.

My husband and I have gotten off and deleted all social media no more Facebook Snapchat tick tock Twitter or anything else we barely ever turn the television on maybe once every 2 to 3 weeks possibly just looking for the weather on the news that's it. We do still like KZfaq for the time being. It has really helped us so far. We are so much happier than we've ever been

The vast majority of people have never heard of this because they're too busy updating their Facebook page and going to work. Too many people are easily deceived. It was said by someone famous, "Its much easier to deceive someone, than to convince them that they have been deceived". This is very dangerous. This needs to be heavily regulated by an independent source. I hope that things change for the better soon. Thank you.

This won't be seriously regulated, until we've been seriously and irreparably harmed by it. Whatever that event is, it will be happening within just a few years. Eventually, we'll no longer be able to vote for people, but for platforms, as we won't be able to trust what we see and hear from elected officials as legitimate sources. We'll need to rely on released statements.

- “I don’t want to fool people.” - “I want to entertain people.” - “I want to make people aware.” I get it and I understand. But there will be those that will take this technology and repurpose it for self-gain because of greed, self-loving, self- indulgence, etc. If a presidential candidate who doesn’t have good communication with his audience could be reconfigured thru deep-fake to appear more warming and approachable. Even create your own audience as well. The technology and the graphic-users could fool the very “elect”; so know the Word of God folks.

"The technology itself is neutral." Nothing meant to fool you into thinking you're seeing something you're not seeing is neutral. I'm sure there are positive or creative ways it can be used, but it is disingenuous and false by nature. costumes don't have to be used to conceal identity; they can be to dress up for fun or to perform... but costumes obscure who you are. That is their purpose. The manipulation of reality is not neutral, even if it doesn't necessarily have to be used malevolently. Because they inevitably will be. If we keep insisting that all of these steps away from tangible truth are innocuous and benign, we're going to find ourselves struggling to cling a common thread of truth and reality. Oh, wait. Too late.

It’s frightening to think what might be possible. We are all vulnerable to being blackmailed, accused of committing a crime, cheating on partners etc with this technology. Government departments, corporations, retail stores already use voice recognition software to capture & authenticate our voice. Our smart devices listen to us & watch our eye movement to see how we respond to certain content. So many people are obsessed with uploading photos & videos of themselves. We are most likely guilty of helping to fast track this technology. We may like to think that AI is neutral but it seems like it’s developing into a monster that will destroy us. Surely it cannot end well.

Cool so...how do you intend for that to happen? Because abolition failed when it came to physical goods like alcohol. How do you intend on banning programs that can be copied, forked, and spread around with no resistance? And ban what exactly? Machine learning for the purposes of editing? That's so wide reaching it would be about as effective as banning pencil lead because carbon is used in gunpowder. At best, fakes should be labeled as such.

You have clever uses of the technology as part of the explanation making it relatable. As this develops, DF will have two outcomes: 1) most people will understand it is entertainment, and won't trust videos they watch that come from "important" people unless they are (a new requirement) officially verified, 2) some people will 100% believe them and be compelled to act. As said, the tech is neutral. People are people. Oversight has to catch up with the tech - and THAT'S the big problem right now.

There are unusual levels of radiation at ancient sites that modern science has documented. Plus there are some really horrible people on Earth and the only way to control them is to threaten to vaporize the entire planet.

So, if a computer engineering student may respond, you might want to isolate the basic code format that is being used and place a deep fake code detector into computers, phones and televisions and monitors that can alert you to the presence of such deceptive technology. The deep fake system uses codes to communicate to all of these. If they record the final deep fake product into a video format you would need to use pixelation detection that is a high definition system that runs in the back ground on these devices that detects invisible imperfections that go unseen by humans and alerts the user to the presence of a deceptive use of this technology. There are many ways to detect " deep fake" technology its just that the fear of its existence us limiting the detection software from being created. There can also be laws made, similar to laws limiting subliminal technologies, that can be used to force creators and users of this technology to inform the viewers that the technology is being used. The law may be quite strict and high dollar fines imposed if the viewer is not informed of its use, or simply outlaw the use of this technology all together unless in video game formats and persons personal appearances have been approved by the holder of that personal appearance.
