"Complete silence is very addictive," says Rebecca Knill, a writer who has cochlear implants that enable her to hear. In this funny, insightful talk, she explores the evolution of assistive listening technology, the outdated way people still respond to deafness and how we can shift our cultural understanding of ability to build a more inclusive world. "Technology has come so far," Knill says. "Our mindset just needs to catch up."

I’m hearing impaired and i remember how every new pair of hearing aids broadened my perspective on sound, i started listening to music cause it actually sounded good, i started hearing little things like birds chirping and newspapers rustling. I’m so glad i get them provided for free!!

Or make it easier to turn on the Close Caption. A lot of people don't know what those 3 little dots in the corner do. Also the Close Caption voice-to-text is still not perfect.

I wish (as a songwriter) I could afford to have a sign language interpreter on my music videos. Instead I try to lyric videos with a legible font (for those with low vision or dyslexia) and will still edit YT’s automated captions to ensure words appear where they are meant to especially when the video may not be of the singer but of visual art.

I’d agree, technology is making significant headway. Now we need people to to do the same and to do that requires listening and learning. From the ground up and top dow, the middle point would become a level playing field.

"Smart designers include multiple ways to access technology." I could not agree with that statement more. It reminds me of how Microsoft used to put a huge amount of effort into making their OS usable with only a keyboard, no mouse. Sure, you could use a mouse like everyone does, but they recognized the value in being able to interact with the OS in multiple ways. Microsoft might still be doing this, but I don't use Windows anymore.

They have improved in leaps and bounds with their approach to inclusion. Designing with everyone in mind is nit only good design but essential as our agent population is ever increasing. However, design should be about the ‘hear and now’ and who needs it. I enjoyed your comment 👏🏻

I came here because I wanted to understand more about technology for the deaf, I recently started a job with a deaf staff member in my team. She blew me away with how capable she was, and I just had to learn more. Thank you for this TED talk! You’ve changed my perspective a whole lot. P.S. this is literally my first comment ever ever!!

Even though I can hear and understand the language of a video or movie I prefer subtitles or close caption . When I listen to music I have to know the lyrics otherwise I don't understand it , gets to mixed up in my brain.

Interesting, informative and well presented. How unfortunate it is that even in the 21st century those of with various human imperfections have to explain ourselves. The good news, today more people are willing to pay attention, learn and hopefully be more supportive. Love your sense of humor, Rebecca Knill. Indeed, humor is the best medicine and one thing no one can take away from us. Warmest wishes. Be a blessing.

I relate to this woman but unlike her I don’t have a physical disability. I was an orphan and a lot of those things like the pity and the belief that you can’t or that you must be suffering because of your living situation. The annoyance of their ignorance. This woman knows more than one world and so do I. Think about that whenever you meet people especially those who aren’t “privileged”as you.

Wasn't thinking how blessed to hear I was until I watched this. Also didn't know that some deaf people didn't necessarily want to get better. I remember a bible passage where the disciples asked Jesus "Who sinned to make this person like this" because that was a normal belief at the time, but he responded that it was for the glory of God. Still don't understand it fully, but I have seen some people healed through prayer in Jesus' name.
