With all the different styles out there it's hard to know what styles work and for what you're looking to learn! This video should give you an idea on what it is you should be looking for when choosing a style to learn in order to not be learning from an illegitimate style and get a false sense of reality!
Comment below your thoughts on what you think makes a style worth learning or not worth your time!

FMA practitioner here. We do realize a fight between two knifemen is not going to look like the "beautiful" drilling you pointed out, but the drilling does help develop certain attributes you'll need for a fight. That sort of drilling is no different to us than hitting focus mitts is to a boxer. But in regards to self-defense, I like the minimalist approach. An art that gets too overly complicated and complex is not good in my opinion. I have a bit of a bias here since I'm a boxer too, but I think boxing is one of the best arts for self-defense. It is so minimalistic compared to anything else, you'll get good at it much quicker than any other art, with just a few well practiced combos and a couple of months spent on footwork. Back in highschool when I was just starting to box, all I knew was how to throw a good jab-cross and a jab-cross-hook combo, but it was enough to stop a bully who was apparently some sort of kickboxer. I have to thank my coach who pretty much wouldn't let me do anything unless I've first mastered those two combos. Even in FMA, knowing just to throw solid angle 1 and 2 strikes with your stick is sometimes enough if you ever find yourself in a situation where you have a weapon in hand. Just look at the Dog Brothers, a lot of their strategy is throwing those two strikes with a lot of power (appropriately called "Caveman" strikes in their system), and it works out for them. That all aside, I also advocate going for grappling arts with standup game like judo or wrestling, instead of doing BJJ.

Thanks for your opinion and fair play that you would stand up for your style and I appreciate your perspective, and I totally agree that boxers on pads is the same and that is my point to be fair. You can see strikers on pads and bags look amazing, like they’re absolutely elite ! But then when you spar then, they don’t look the same at all and even in BJJ which I practice as well and as a purple belt I can further provide my own experience of seeing people drill great and spar badly what I’m trying to say when it comes to the kali knife sparring vs the drilling was you don’t see any of the skills being practiced, the deflection work is not being utilised and they start to look like combat sport athletes with how they test each other out and flinch and get scrappy etc. At the end of the day, I agree you have to drill to improve basic skills and develop new techniques etc, but this techniques , if worthwhile , will present themselves in the non-compliant practice, and if they don’t then it’s hard to justify they are worth practicing. Which was where my point of ‘do you spar’ is made as I can’t tell how many times a BJJ teammate has said “check out this new move I’ve learnt” showed me and then I say it won’t work if they resist, they disagree I say ok, let’s see, and it fails to work every time. I’m not saying FMA itself is useless, I’ve practiced it myself and I have a karambit tattoo as the symbol of my further growth as a martial artist, to stay open to all manner of styles and techniques. In short, I’m saying you have to be careful you don’t get sucked into some of the “dream” aspects of practice and instead make sure you focus on honing skills you know work in non-compliant sparring or training and if you’re saying you and your gym do this then that’s awesome and I hope to one day train with you guys too!

@@MadRobFights Haha, I got what you were trying to say from the very beginning. If I sounded provoked or offended by your video, I assure you that is not the case. I largely agree with with what you said about the knife drilling, but I wanted to add a bit more info and context to the story. If you really want to grab or knock someone's knife hand away like in all these videos online, the drills are only 20-30% of the way (I think good footwork and athleticism play an equal or even bigger role), and this is the sad truth that most FMA people aren't willing to admit, as most would prefer to run FMA as a business that just drills you the entire time rather than teach you effective self-defense and martial arts.
