How Tesla Drag Strip Mode Works

Drag Strip Mode preconditions the battery and drive units to ideal operating temperatures for maximum acceleration. Cheetah Stance lowers the front suspension for optimal weight transfer during launch. Together, they help make Model S Plaid the quickest accelerating mass-production car on the planet.

A little part of the initial launch from the outside seems to be sped up. I think it doesn't look this instant from the outside. From the inside though you feel all that insane torque you have at the launch. Edit: If it is actually real acceleration, I'm WOWed cause, there must be an incredible grip between the track and the tires and also the car needs to be able to send that much torque to the wheels. Why I say that is because at launch you can have very much torque with very little horsepower since the wheels are not spinning yet, so manufacturers have to limit the torque that is available for use (horsepower = rpm*torque/5252, and since the rpm is close to 0, you could have insane amounts of torque that could break something if not limited). If the torque can get so high, the driver could be easily accelerating at above 1,6G's which is insane.

Terrific explanation. And also the reason why Corvettes, etc are still very cool -- even if my Model Y can apparently beat almost all of them on the street. (I haven't tried and won't.) To get the most out of a 'Vette you have to know how to drive it. It's completely different. I'm a good driver, but I am not a race car driver. (I used to drive with one, he could take curves in the car we shared at speeds I could never even get near. I asked him one time and he said, "Yep, you're doing everything I do, but....." ) To maximize the acceleration, follow the torque curve, in an ICE car you actually have to know what you're doing. In a Tesla the computer knows. We should all respect the difference appreciate each other's cars. I might sound like an ICE guy making excuses. Nope, Model Y Long Range 2020 Full FSD, and a stockholder. I know that my Model Y LR is one of the slowest Teslas, and I know that recent year Corvette has a 2.9 0 to 60 time - in the same conditions as a Model S Plaid, but on the street? The 'Vette would be burning rubber and my computer would be following the torque curve.Love driving my Tesla. Can't wait until I can tap the stalk twice and take a nap....

There´s still quite a road ahead to full autonomous driving. These systems need to prove they are fully everyday reliable which basically means they have to prove they are more reliable than the average human driver. Right now I am fascinated by what is already possible but I always caution that, no matter how advanced the tech is, the deciding and controlling factor has to be the driver. You don´t just let your car do stuff blindly, you work with your car to better control your journey and thus protect yourself, your passengers and your surroundings. Reading through your adventures here with your friend I can finally understand why some very experienced and involved drivers consider Teslas to be "boring" though.

I heard about this in some videos, although apparently some rules have been adjusted by now to allow the S to go full power even without a chute and rollcage. .... chute and rollcage 🤣🤣🤣 You know... sometimes I kinda pity some of those performance cars. Imagine building a dedicated powerhouse, almost completely useless for anything other than drag racing... and then some luxury sedan just rolls up, quietly nonetheless, and smokes you.

@Robert Mändl End of last year if I let off to 149 they were OK, but for 150 plus ya gotta have a chute and cage in your kid taxi. Yeah, leaving the track with the family, running the AC, letting the car drive itself we passed all the fat tired slicks on trailers the plaid smoked, lumbering behind tow vehicles, special race gas etc. Love a dragster but Elon wasn't BSing when he talked of a dinosaur like extinction. The onslaught continues....

@@robertmandl9326 don’t feel bad. They are having fun building and driving the car. Tesla “drivers” don’t put any effort or skill into it so they get no satisfaction from the “drive” except by bragging on the internet.

@@HaloDude557 Haven´t met a Tesla driver yet that is not satisfied. You may also leave out the quotation marks around driver. Just because you can´t handle a Tesla and don´t know what its capable off doesn´t mean there aren´t others who do. Also nothing wrong with a car that can be racer and family shuttle all in one. Get with the times.

@@robertmandl9326 "can't handle a tesla" BBAHAHAHHA. How hard is it to turn on launch control and drive in a straight line? Tesla "drivers" do not need skill to drive, much less they do not drive at all. The car does almost everything for them already.

Calling it "gas pedal" is pretty much grandfathered in, the same way as "calling an Uber" is allowed even if you're calling Lyft. We all know what he means.
