Everybody knows the A-10 can bring the pain to ground targets like few aircraft in history, but the aircraft’s tight turn radius and powerful gun can actually make it a force to be reckoned with in a dogfight too.

I was at DM in the late 70s as a load toad on the A-10A. We sent some birds to Red Flag, they racked up 4 Air to Air kills in a single mission. Five aggressors in F-5Es saw a flight of four A-10s flying in the weeds through a low mountain pass. They dove straight down on them. The problem for the aggressors? The A-10 pilots saw them start their dive, opened those barn door sized speed breaks and the aggressors leveled out right in front of those guns. Two of the F-5s broke right, 2 to the left and one max climbed on burner. The A-10 didn't carry Sidewinders back then so that one was the only one to get away. It only takes 11 frames of the gun camera to score a confirmed kill at Red Flag. One of our pilots had his target in the kill zone for over 150 frames. Yeah, you can out run the plane, but not the gun.

You've just made the point for why exercises are BS, the kill being some frames of gun camera footage. That would be fine if said gun actually had a radar ranger, but it doesn't so there would be a high chance that an A10 gun would miss at anything but very short range.

This was my father-in-law"s idea Col Michael Mecca first generation Italian. He won in his career the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Sliver Star, and a few others. He was engineer going into military in WWII. He volunteered to be the first combat helicopter pilot in the Koren War. During the time he pull out a company of soldiers trapped in a river while they were being attack by Battalion of Chinese and Koran soldiers on the other side of the river. He spent over eight hours back and forth pulling them out with his helicopter, the only helicopter, while taking incoming fire the entire time, which resulted in the helicopter being completely shot up He flew combat planes, jet, test pilot, designs. I think he came up later with A-10 out of that experience. As you can see the A-10 design protects the pilot, which he had none during his missions, and supports the ground troops. So the he designed specially the "box" to protect the pilot so that they couldn't get shot by ground fire and, and the weapons systems for the plane. I have some of the original test firing of the 30mm "nuke" shells and the steel targets that they were tested on and a couple of the original design models of the A-10 which actually his grandson has now. He and his wife are buried in Arlington Cemetery with full honors. He was a super intelligent, kind, unassuming, and brave man that I felt deserved a mention at this time and was appropriate. He served his country with distinction!

Anything except even the most basic air defense. These were grounded partway through the invasion of Iraq because they kept getting shot down. Like, fucking constantly. As for the supposedly amazing gun, most of the kills came from the missiles. If all you want is a ground attack platform with a long loiter time, then the Super Tucano is a better option. No, it can't handle any level of air defense, but then again, neither can the A-10. The damn plane is too expensive for what it can do. I promise that in any near-peer conflict, these wouldn't leave the US for any reason. And don't discredit us by comparing this outdated shit-bird to a Marine. Marines are more like the F-15, if anything; it's big and can, apparently, carry as much as their CO deems necessary. Or, maybe the F-16, because they cost almost nothing to maintain and can fill most roles they weren't designed for. But not the A-10. The A-10 is more like an artilleryman on a towed gun: fuckin outdated as shit and too slow to keep up with modern battlefield.

@@CaptainFrost32 Not likely. That is a myth, soft kills were very common for the A-10 in Desert Storm to the point that they specifically pulled them off Republican Guard units as they followed the Soviet Doctrine of embedded anti-air units. They were getting too many aircraft that were damaged beyond local repair. That was with AAA and MANPADs which have much smaller warheads compare to air to air missiles. So while the A-10 might survive the hit and make it to an airfield, it isn't going to be flying missions the next day. Sidewinder's fail, like in Syria 2017, they don't track into the sun, can be decoyed with flares & active laser blinders, can be min-ranged, max-ranged (Jamming the WEZ) and aircraft only carry 2-4. AMRAAMs can also be min-ranged, max-ranged, decoyed with chaffe, jammed with ECM pods, DRFM decoys, or AESA radars, and most aircraft carry 6 or fewer. As a result an enemy fast-mover may well encounter a Hog with few or zero missiles and try to just gun it. Moreover, the A-10 has recently been tasked with dropping the GBU-39, winged SDB at stand-off ranges, probably in order to take out threatening SAMs on the day, and was likely chosen bc its toughness gives it the best chance of surviving pop-up threats like AA (ZSU-23-4, Pantsir, 57mm, etc) small arms fire, and MANPADs. This means the A-10 will be operating forward, probably in concert with Wild Weasel aircraft and may well be engaged by enemy fighters before CAP can splash them. Bottom Line: It would be stupid to let good A-10 pilots die bc you just assume away all A2A threats. Better to update the software in their Mark 1 GrayMatter so they live to fight another day. Both pilots had over +500 hrs in their respective aircraft too so it wasn't like a rookie pilot vs a vet. And the F-16 pilot can be heard complaining how he can't really do anything against the A-10 and is sorta locked in a losing turn battle. It's very interesting to watch.

The question is was this a set up as a guns only turning dogfight or was the engagement a “real” one. I.e was it a classic WW2 style head to head merge and turn fight or was the F16 allowed to enter the fight at high speed in a zoom and boom attack, using its radar and speed advantage to choose when and how the engagement was initiated.
@Cameron0214
@Cameron0214 2 жыл бұрын
@@robstone4537 The fight was a merge with the F-16 having to get eyes on the A-10 before firing. It was pretty understood before the fight that the F-16 would stomp the A-10 in a BVR fight hence they decided to have them merge. Also it was noted that high speed zoom attacks don't work very well against the A-10, because the faster the F-16 goes, the wider it's turn will be, and the A-10 will always turn inside the F-16 and let off a sidewinder. They also talked about how if you managed to extend away from the A-10 it can use it's 30mm way further than the F-16 can use it's 20mm and how the A-10 is totally capable of surviving the 20mm while the F-16 would just melt against 30mm rounds.

@@Cameron0214 Any visual merge and turn fight will likely be won by the slower, more manoeuvrable aircraft. This is the main reason F4’s were initially at a disadvantage in Vietnam against Mig17’s: in the early stages of the war they had to visually identify targets before they were allowed to engage them. An F86 Sabre would probably defeat an F16 under those conditions, but there is a reason the airforce now uses F16’s, not F86’s. With its higher thrust and speed no competent F16 pilot would willingly get slow and dirty with an A10, using his radar from long range he can choose how and when to engage. If you are in an F16 and end up in a turning fight with an A10 things have already gone wrong.
@ChucksSEADnDEAD
@ChucksSEADnDEAD 2 жыл бұрын
@@robstone4537 Not just that, but F-4s were at a disadvantage because the Air Force had to travel through areas where they had no ground radar coverage while North Vietnam could see them coming with plenty of time to react. So they sent the MiGs around the border and came in from behind. Many times these F-4s were flying slow to escort strike packages so the MiGs did high speed passes to attack and fled before the Phantoms could speed up and give chase. The Navy Phantoms always had their ships giving them radar coverage from behind so they didn't have this problem. The USAF Phantoms that went out to look for MiGs didn't have this disadvantage either.

Absolutely spot on. Great analysis. In a dog fight it isn't always about speed and altitude. You stated it perfectly. Turn radius and who can get their nose on the enemy first is more often than not the factor that determines who will be the victor in a dog fight. If I was down low and just made the merge and survived with say a Mig-29 or a F-16 and they were at 6 or 700 knots and I was at 350 I guarantee I could get the A-10 pointed at them way before they made 270 degrees in their turn and when they got there they would find several hundred rounds of red hot armor piercing 30mm shredding their bird. The Hog may be slow and ugly but damn, what a beautiful piece of nightmarish killing machine it is. Great video...

The A10 can wagon wheel, but even with a 30mm cannon you are talking fractions of a second to snapshot him, and you have no radar gunsight so its WWII deflection shooting and prayer that you hit him. everyone says this, and everyone forgets that the A-10 is not a glorified WWII fighter. Boom and Zooming does not work nearly as well when the enemy has missiles. If you don't kill the A-10 on your first BnZ pass, and try to "zoom" above it and away from it, it will have plenty of time to turn inside your circle and hit you with a missile. This couldn't happen in WWII, so the comparison isn't great. Sure, in a prolonged vertical fight the A-10 would probably never get guns on a fighter jet, but it doesn't really matter with how far away missiles can be launched from. No amount of zoom will get you away from an AIM-9's effective range in time, and even though it isn't guaranteed to hit you, you really don't want to take that chance... So as soon as you get in close to an A-10, you either have to commit to the turnfight, which gets you killed obviously, like you guys said, or attempt to extend away with your superior speed and climb rate, which might put you in position to get locked by a missile. Either way it's not ideal.

Well, no, however, the A10 has no radar gunsight. The odds of actual air to air guns hit are poor from the A10 under most cases. Probably my favorite aircraft ever built, a lot of people will say the hog is an ugly machine but I've always though it's beauty lies in it's simplicity, it's an aircraft designed for close air support, tank busting and general ground attack and it does it's job better than anything that came before it. 👍

On the "chess board" of war planes the A-10 aren't the fast moving Rooks, Bishops or Queen that can fly all the way across the board. They're the slower moving Knights that might take a minute to get there, but move in sharp L's that can wreck havoc quickly once in position.

Like many, I am a fan of the A-10s but, with the current capabilities of air-air missiles and radar, I thought dogfights were extremely rare to the point jetfighters still carry machineguns as emergency defense measure only (probably to be phased out in 6th gen aircrafts). Am I wrong?

LFMAO, any simulated dogfight player would tell you the best turn rate wins. I was in very boring fights where, for minutes, we circle each other. Ofc with a wingman this would be much easier. The answer how to dogfight against faster crafts was answered during WW2 against Zero in the pacific theater.

very seldom do a-10's go at ground forces without defensive air support as well. So, in reality, there is few and far between missions were enemy aircraft will engage them. That being said, most a-10s have damage from the ground forces fighting back at them.
@amistrophy
@amistrophy 2 жыл бұрын
It's really the only thing thats good about the plane, but conversely it's still bad. It's slow and low enough that small weapons fire from the ground can hit it and damage the plane enough for a mission kill.
