The Amazon rainforest absorbs huge amount of CO2 and helps to cool the world, but recent studies have shown the rainforest is approaching a tipping point, with profound implications for the global climate and biodiversity.

The section in Brazil, which has suffered the most deforestation since 2006, is already producing more carbon than it absorbs, and there are worrying signs that the rest of the forest is not far behind. Josh Toussaint-Strauss investigates how the Amazon has reached this point, and how agriculture and Brazilian politics are playing a central role

80% of the world's soybean crop is fed to livestock, so you missed the compounding effect of increased deforestation via cattle/livestock which needs more feed, hence an increase in soy feed allows for more cattle/livestock.... it just keeps the cycle going and more damaging. Deforestation is bad regardless of speculation on climates changing or not.

The meat industry is the leading cause of deforestation of the Amazon (pasture+soy). Given the fact that Flying Rivers created by the forest irrigate Brasil, there will be desertification in a major scale.

soy, becoming cesspools and polluters or toxic subtances ..fast. soy, that besides the land trasformation into almost desert (whenever it's bare soil before plantation) and savannah aspect (which doesn't compares as efficiency or climate/temperature humidity etc stabilization with trees/forests), which bc of nonhuman/human animal needs/consuming would be very quickly and efficiently turned into feces amonia methane co2 or other substances that act as toxins/disadvantages for this environment.

so the British news is blaming Brazil for the heat they are suffering in the northern hemisphere knowing that it was the British who started the first industrial revolution that considerably increased the Earth temperature, in addition of course, being on the continent that practically destroyed its native vegetation

No one knew about global warming until about 50 years ago. I still think Britain wouldn't have cared if they knew about it during the industrial revolution though, which is why I think it's the responsibility of Britain and similar countries to help Brazil and similar countries develop in a sustainable way. The Amazon is very important to the whole planet's ecosystem so it can't just be ignored. The problem is that people like Bolsonaro care more about corporations than they do about the planet.

Why didn't you mention the biggest reason for Amazon deforestation - cattle ranching. "Cattle ranching is the leading cause of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. In Brazil, this has been the case since at least the 1970s: government figures attributed 38 percent of deforestation from 1966-1975 to large-scale cattle ranching. Today the figure in Brazil is closer to 70 percent. Most of the beef is destined for urban markets, whereas leather and other cattle products are primarily for export markets."

I guess there's only so much that can be discussed in a short video. Make it too much longer, to cover the many, many concerns that deforestation causes - and you lose half your audience (since we're slowly being trained to accept 'bites' of information rather than solid 1 hour long videos). At least this short video gets a small part of the information out there, being watched by more people, gaining views, affecting the algorithm, and giving those who are more pro-environment a bit more information with which to strengthen their stance - while hopefully wearing away at the arguments posed by someone who might still be 'on the fence' or in denial.

Like the vast mycelium networks that quickly break down forest litter into nutrients and feed it back to plants, getting carbon 'fixed' more efficiently - whereas, pulling down trees and tilling for crop-growing releases masses of CO2 into the air just through soil disturbance, and that's before adding all the CO2 and methane resulting from the massed death of microbes, insects, etc that could only thrive in a steady state rainforest environment.

To be clear, the Global North will benefit from climate change and they are the ones who have caused this problem and could do things like paying to prevent deforestation. They won't. At that point, they'll just invest in keeping their shores pretty while African, South Asian and Caribbean people deal with the repercussions. The solution? The Black world invest in allies in the Global North who can develop solutions to water shortages, can get access to the tech to genetically modify plants to survive higher temperatures and saltier water, etc... And who can bring some of their people out of the regions at greatest risk. It's like asking Congress to cut their own pay and ban themselves from lobbying. This doesn't get us anywhere. The developed countries are the most efficient on the planet, in terms of emissions per economic output. The climate doesn't care who cut down their forest. Also, you wouldn't even need to cut down the forest to be economic. Brazil could maintain and protect the rainforest for the world and take a high pay for it. But your politicians aren't even open for such concepts. At this rate the Amazon will keep shrinking and our climate will keep getting worse.

Soon they will be burning "deniers" on stakes, in the public square, in acts of faith! That the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is basically kept stable, regulated, by the flora. When they know that there is gaseous fertilization, from CO2 greenhouses, to make vegetables bigger. That dry air has only 0.04% CO2. That to produce a greenhouse effect, capable of raising the temperature considerably, you would have to multiply this mass by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times. I don't see another way than to lower demand for Brazilian soy than to find ways to mass produce soy or a viable alternative elsewhere. Possibly through vat grown protein alternatives for livestock feed or even human consumption. Cultured meat alternatives are already being made. How much easier and cheaper would it be to produce protien rich alternatives that are not nearly as palatable nor technically challenging as something closely resembling meat... Or maybe find ways to really ramp up soy bean production in large indoor farming. As long as there is money to be made in poorly regulated markets, through any means - No matter the downstream costs, somebody will be willing to make that money.
