The upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) will transform one of the world's most productive X-ray light source facilities, enabling it to produce X-ray beams that are up to 500 times brighter than those it currently generates.
This will open new avenues of discovery across many scientific fields. Laurent Chapon, Argonne's associate laboratory director for photon sciences and director of the APS, explains how the upgraded APS will change the world.

ABOUT ARGONNE
Argonne National Laboratory seeks solutions to pressing national problems in science and technology. The nation’s first national laboratory, Argonne conducts leading-edge basic and applied scientific research in virtually every scientific discipline. Argonne researchers work closely with researchers from hundreds of companies, universities, and federal, state and municipal agencies to help them solve their specific problems, advance America’s scientific leadership and prepare the nation for a better future. With employees from more than 60 nations, Argonne is managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit the Office of Science website.

Brighter?? How does that help? I Feel like this company doesn't know what they are doing since their logo is nearly the same as Google Drive.

More wasted money. No impact at all. Nada. As useless as the fusion boondoggle

Not really wasted money, no. Just because you don't hear about the impacts, doesn't mean they don't exist. The CERN particle accelerator, for example, has contributed massively, yet I bet you haven't heard of any of these contributions. People like you have to realize that innovation and research take time. Best example being the Lithium-ion battery packs, which is used in almost all consumer electronics. A concept known since the 60s took over 30 years, until finally being mass produced in the 2000s by Sony. Would you consider this a waste of money too? Couldn't imagine electronics nowadays without the damn thing. Also, highly amusing, how people always complain about how other countries like China are going to catch up with us, while simultaneously opposing every kind of research they deem unnecessary.

@@adh615 Interesting “logic”. I haven’t seen a unicorn. How can I say it doesn’t exist? I can’t. I’m sure your statement violates a well accepted rule of logic. I’m no logician so I don’t know which one. But I bet it exists! What frustrates me is this magical thinking perpetrated by governments, governmental agencies, “scientists “ University professors ad nausea that FUSION and intermittent power without storage will supply grid power. There are no facts to back these claims up. What is a fact is that Alvin Weinberg by 1970 operated and proved the concept of the molten salt nuclear reactor. Perfectly safe, 99% efficient, cheap limitless thorium fuel, will burn nuclear waste while generating massive quantities of carbon free pollution free heat and electricity. Yet THE WORLD is fixated on “solutions” that WILL NOT WORK. Germany is the test case. Let’s see how their grid and industries perform in a few months when the cheap, stored RUSSIAN natural gas runs out. Brownouts, de industrialization, political and social unrest is what I predict. We won’t have to wait long. This is short term. Long term? Batteries will STILL not save Germany. They are SCREWED. LNG at 10 times the price of Russian pipeline gas will throw Europe in a depression. The renewable magical thinking will be exposed for the fraud it is. MSR’s are being developed worldwide, albeit slowly. Will the world wake up from its renewable dream world in time?

@@patricksullivan3919 Care to explain, what's wrong with my logic here? You can literally look up all the contributions to science, projects like CERN have. I did, took me less than 5 minutes. Sure as hell won't list them all here, I'm certain you're able to look for yourself. Germany also isn't the best arguement against Renewables, since countries like Denmark and Iceland, which also have a huge amount of green energy production, seem to be doing better. They're proof, that renewables DO work. Germany is a different story. The reason for the german energy crisis, is not renewables, but the atrocious and powerful bureaucracy, which slowed down the switch to renewables immensely. Russian gas was to be a stopgap, because of this. Noone could have predicted the war and the souring political situation, so again, not the fault of wind turbines ans solar cells. Also a big reason the current prices are so high, is because Germany's exporting a high amount of energy to France. Maybe you've already heard, but at least a third of their reactors were offline this year. Less renewables didn't really benefit France in any way. And I would know, I live here in Germany :D Maybe there'll be political and social unrest, maybe not, hard to tell and predict. But I'll keep you updated on the situation.
