Mentioning Scotland is close to an analogy. I think the English historical treatment of Ireland is closer though. The English have been very like the Russians towards their neighbours. They have used cultural and language erasure, planted population and land theft in exactly the same way the Russians have with their neighbours. The English in their heart of hearts don't see the Scots, Welsh or Irish as equal to them. No fraternité but plenty of coercion, control and looking down their noses (the northern and poor English aren't included here, they get treated almost as badly). The English have lost the stomach for violent conquest after centuries of horror. Unfortunately the Russians haven't. The only thing that will force Russians to lose the stomach for inflicting horror in the name of national pride is bodybags arriving back to wives and mothers. Hundreds of thousands of bodybags. The only real tragedy is that innocent Ukrainian civilians and defenders will die as the bags are filled.

You have a great point. Vatniks would use this analogy to say because England did it, it's okay for russia to do it too but in the 21st century I personally think the whole world should stand against any conquest like this. It should be seen as unacceptable on the world stage

When say you "The English in their heart of hearts don't see the Scots, Welsh or Irish as equal to them" I assume hope you are referring to Westminster and Whitehall, and even then I'm not sure I'd agree with you on that. But from a personal stand point, I'm English and I regard the peoples of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as our equals and brethren. Wether they feel the same way or not is a different matter and one that's up to them. But please be specific when referring to certain people and how they feel because I can promise you there are many Englishmen and women in my life whom I've met all over England that have nothing but love for their neighbours to the north, west and across the Irish Sea. And I've met scarcely a handful that feel otherwise. -PS recognise that you might indeed be English yourself! But if so thats all the more reason not to make such a broad generalisation of English public's attitudes to our neighbours and indeed fellow citizens. For the record: I'm a unapologetic unionist and would be absolutely heartbroken to see the United Kingdom break apart, but with that said I believe in self determination and would accept (albeit with a broken heart) any of the aforementioned nations seeking independence and breaking away from the union. Also in closing I do however concede that your point of historical cultural and language erasure, planted population and land theft is not an invalid one. It's sadly a part of our history now. I only hope like so many before that things improve for all mankind, whomever they are, wherever it is they might be.

No race see each other as equals. Humans are naturally tribalistic by nature and will always have preference for those who are more genetically similar to them. Also comparing the English psych as akin to the Russian psych is also an asinine analogy. English are classical libertarians by nature while Russians have always seen themselves as being collective. English and Russian history are not the same

I'm certainly no fan of his , but Putin never described the collapse of the SSR as 'the greatest political catastrophe of the 20th Century' - a more accurate translation would be 'one of the great political disasters of the 20th Century'. It's a subtle, but quite important difference in translation.

Does Peter even speak Russian - what qualifies him as an expert on Russia?
@natalieblack1698

People who quote this statement usually take out of context, whether due to ignorance or malice. There’s a second part to it that explains what he meant. He spoke about Russians who, as a result of the collapse of the Union, “suddenly found themselves abroad” without the opportunity to return to their homeland. “It was impossible for them to return, to reunite with their relatives. There was no place to work, no place to live. This is a great humanitarian tragedy, without any exaggeration.”

Well, if the number of Russian comment bots is proportional to how concerned the Russian propaganda machine is about a particular commentary, this must have been an excellent discussion. But unfortunately, often missing is a discussion how much confidence Putin gained from the fairly cheap and riskfree Russian disinformation campaign. For example, Trump the disruptor was one of its products.

The sheer amount of approving and cheering comments by ordinary Russians in response to videos depicting the atrocities against civilians and prisoners of war in Ukraine were just as shocking to Ukrainians as the war itself. We had somehow grown accustomed to the war, but the realization of who we have been living alongside all this time without even knowing it is still horrifying. Those savages referred to themselves as our brotherly people. One can only imagine what they might do to those they consider their enemies given the opportunity. Don't give them that opportunity because it's you who they call their enemies. Negotiating with Russia is akin to negotiating with Ebola. Allowing Russia to remain undefeated is like undertreating a deadly infection - it will only return stronger. This is why any peace agreement that doesn't ensure a clear victory for Ukraine is merely a temporary ceasefire.

Pavel (or Ivan), you should pay attention to the word "vital" that appears in the following letter from Stalin to Roosevelt: "Your decision, Mr President, to grant the Soviet Union an interest-free loan to the value of $1,000,000,000 to meet deliveries of munitions and raw materials to the Soviet Union is accepted by the Soviet Government with heartfelt gratitude as vital aid to the Soviet Union in its tremendous and onerous struggle against our common enemy - bloody Hitlerism. On instructions from the Government of the U.S.S.R. I express complete agreement with your terms for granting the loan, repayment of which shall begin five years after the end of the war and continue over 10 years after expiration of the five-year period. The Soviet Government is ready to do everything to supply the United States of America with such commodities and raw materials as are available and as the United States may need. As regards your wish, Mr President, that direct personal contact be established between you and me without delay if circumstances so require, I gladly join you in that wish and am ready, for my part, to do all in my power to bring it about. Yours very sincerely, J. Stalin "

great interview ... nice to hear the back ground info from the old days, I have been living and working in Moscow and in Kiev. ..... 99% of the Russians are very afraid to stand on their own feeds, to make decisions on their own, they rather follow a leader, even if this leader is abusing them from the left to the right, poisons them with nerve gas or kicks them out of the window. Prigozhin was an exception. That's why people welcomed him in Rostov. He did exactly what the rest of Russia should have done long time ago. Kick the dictator out. But everyone in Russia is to scared of doing that. I still have Russian friends from the old days, non of them is in support of that regime in Moscow, none of them wants to live in Russia. They all live in Thailand , India, Israel, or Europe hoping that they can renew their passport when it will expire. In March 22, there were a 100 000 requests at western university's and tech companies from Russian students/scientists for a job. This type of brain drain puts Russia back into the middle age.

Russians, and especially Soviets were taught to be this way. In the West people are taught from an early age to make choices; maybe 100 per day. The Soviets, and later the Russians were taught to obey; and that choices would be made for them by more "qualified" people. In Soviet times, these "qualified" people were the Party honchos; now that role has been taken by an authoritarian Putin regime for the benefit of the oligarchs. I had such hope for the Russian people in the early 1990s but in hindsight I don't think they ever had a chance to learn to live in a free pluralistic society.

Throughout history, Russians had a very special relationship with people who wield power. Tzars and emperors were referred to as “The Lord’s Anointed”, the one who reigns by the divine right, and their power was believed to be sacred. That's why these days the Russian “government” is thought to be a separate, almost miraculous entity, something entirely different from the people. As a result of this unhealthy relationship with the government, the regular Russian person is born with a rare genetic malfunction: an inborn submission to any authority.
@wildmouse5888
@wildmouse5888 5 ай бұрын
@@christianevanherck6023 It is hard to describe just how alien that mindset is to an American. We fought a revolution to get away from a Monarchy and we bristle at the very thought of a hereditary aristocracy. Our nation was founded upon a bedrock of distrust of government and elites of any sort.

@@goenzoy712 You offer no facts that might support your opinion. Therefore it looks like wishful thinking. In 2021 Russia was not under international sanctions and had gold in their hands economically speaking. Among other things, well paying reliable clients from the EU for oil and gas exports, joint ventures with western companies and know how to exploit those resources efficiently and hundreds of modern aircraft from Airbus or Boeing to maintain the necessity of Russia's civil aviation. And now? Do you really believe you know better than Binyon or Zeihan who analyze developments and both conclude that Russia is declining with even a risk of disintegration?
