Feudalism was dying. In the age of globe-spanning colonial empires, commercial printing, and the scientific revolution, the idea of a state held together by a myriad of personal arrangements between ruler and nobility was beginning to show its age, and those who could not adapt would be left behind. But history is not a straight road into the future, it is a hydra-like network of half-worn paths mired in shade and brambles. Take, for instance, Great Britain, where the rights and privileges of the king were so contentious as to drive the kingdom into civil war and begin the gradual transfer of power from Sovereign to Parliament... and then, there was the French method.

I think one thing that is often overlooked about France's success under Louis XIV and Louis XV is that they both lived so long, and that meant that there was very little instability at the top of the government. Their form of Absolutism only worked because there was absolutely no change in who was in charge; for almost two centuries, there were only three kings of France. That's really rare, but I think it's mostly why it worked.

He actually gave himself the name “Sun King” by adopting the Sun as an emblem to represent him. I’d say it fits seeing as how all affairs of state revolves around him, similar to how the Earth revolves around the sun. Also, Louis is a really overrated monarch imo. He plunged the nation into massive debt by the end of his reign, and started many of the practices which would lead to the French Revolution.

Louis may not have been a fan of Protestants, but he did allow the Jews to stay in France after being kicked out in 1306. Jews who'd escaped from Portugal had been living illegally in Bordeaux and Bayonne for about a generation before he was born, but with the annexation of Alsace in 1648, there were a lot more, so he went "okay, you can all stay, but _never go to the colonies!"_ And Esther Brandeau was like "cool story, bro."

The parts where the crowned heads of Europe are absolutely *freaking out* about Spain’s upcoming succession crisis and trying to figure out a land division that will avoid war is my favorite thing you’ve ever done, and I’ve watched every video on this channel. Bravo, man-bravo. You get all the kudos. The rest of the episode is also really great, too. As a Paradox gamer, feudal relationships (Crusader Kings) and the transition away from feudalism (Europa Universalis, Victoria) are some of my favorite aspects of history, which is one reason I absolutely adore the 1600s as a period of history-feudalism is kind of dying, and the leaders of society are either trying to preserve it, or trying to build something better out of its ashes. No one is really sure where society is going. We’re going through something very similar today, actually, except instead of the end of feudalism, it’s the beginning of an internet-and-AI future-but some of the social aspects are the same: an elite that’s trying to keep things the way they are as much as possible amidst massive change, and uncertainty as to how everything will shake out.
@JackRackam
@JackRackam Жыл бұрын
You have my thanks! Yeah, I've had similar thoughts about a hypothetical AI-driven future. I'm trying to think about how to phrase this without sounding too high-minded or political, but I wonder if AI (assuming it gets to the point where it can realistically replace a large amount of the labour force without creating a similar amount of new jobs) poses a real obstacle to capitalism. I say that not to pass judgement one way or another or to suggest what kind of alternatives could/should exist, but if human labour at a large enough scale were to be outmatched by AI, that sort of complicates how the labour market functions and what most people will do to get by; and the idea of who owns AI-generated content is already sort of murky (I could imagine a world where Google tries to claim some degree of ownership over everything their AI makes, there's issues in the art field already where artists whose work was fed to the model want to claim some kind of ownership rights, then of course there's the individuals directing the program to consider). I suppose only time will tell!
@jonathanrich9281
@jonathanrich9281 Жыл бұрын
@@JackRackam Ahhhh, I got a response! Awesome! Yeah, I think that if human labor is outmatched by AI in enough fields, capitalism…I mean, it won’t necessarily be *gone,* but it will have to change. If the people in charge want to stay in charge, they’ll have to institute some sort of UBI or something similar in order to support the masses of people who won’t be able to find work. If they don’t, they could end up with a French Revolution style of turmoil very easily.

@@JackRackam One thing I always come back to is how automation in the industrial revolution was also something that in theory should've overtaken the need for labour and made us all need to work less...and was just used by those in charge of the economic system to make things worse for the labourers, by making them individually less valuable. AI automation feels like it could go the same way.

Louis XIV was such a massive impact on European history that even today, direct descendants of his are *still* sitting on European thrones :the current King of Spain (Felipe VI) is his 9Xgreat grandson in the direct male line, and the current Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Henri I, is also his 9x great grandson. Both through his grandson, Felipe V of Spain, who he plonked on the throne of Spain following the War of the Spanish Succession. In case anyone is interested the descent goes: For Spain: Louis XIV of France>Louis, the Grand Dauphin>Felipe V of Spain>Carlos III of Spain>Carlos IV of Spain>Francisco, Duke of Cadiz>Francisco, King Consort of Spain>Alfonso XII of Spain>Alfonso XIII of Spain>Juan, Count of Barcelona>Juan Carlos I of Spain>Felipe VI of Spain. And as regards Luxembourg: Louis XIV of France>Louis, the Grand Dauphin>Felipe V of Spain>Filippo, Duke of Parma>Ferdinando, Duke of Parma>Louis I, King of Etruria>Carlo II, Duke of Parma>Carlo III, Duke of Parma>Roberto I, Duke of Parma>Prince Felix of Luxembourg>Jean I of Luxembourg>Henri I of Luxembourg.

You’re onto something with how both France and Great Britain had civil wars with apparently polar opposite results actually: the Fronde actually wound up consolidating power in the hands of the monarchy (or, more precisely, the nascent central government as this was the time of Richelieu and Mazarin). Louis XIV didn’t attain his personal rule until Mazarin passed away in 1658; he built on the Cardinals’ achievements by further removing the nobility from political power by encouraging them to serve as professional soldiers and/or attending Versailles (where they could be carefully watched). He quite literally tied their interests to his own rather than simply side-lining them. Obviously there’s way more to do it than this brief summary, but that’s the shortest version.

He did have a reason, the warden wanted to hype himself up by having a “mysterious super important and dangerous and real prisoner whose imprisonment is entrusted only with this kickass superstar warden.”

I think the greatest bit of humor in this was the scene where Louis listens to all his justifications as he decides that peace in Europe (tm) is overrated.

Let's just say he helped the revolutionary hundred years earlier by creating a massive contrast between the nobility and the commoner, giving opportunity to the commoner to exercise their competancy, and making many many geopolitical enemies so the revolutionary army could project power later. The comedic timing in these videos is something else XD. I'd like to point out a couple of things though. Joseph Ferdinand, Leopold's grandson, is a representative of the house of Bavaria, traditionally rival of the Habsburg and, unsurprisingly, ally of France. His claim descends from his grandmother Margaret Theresa, (first) wife to Leopold I and sister to the future Charles II, king of spain. Marriages between rival families is really not uncommon and even Louis' mother is a spanish Habsburg herself, king Charles' aunt. So I don't think Louis XIV would really think of Joseph Ferdinand as an Habsburg. BTW the poor kid is only 7 years old when he dies

Funny enough, the wars he started or provoked, was only done so the nobles would have a outlet for their energy alongside the massive parties. Ironically, his cult of personality led to the fall of the monarchy as none of his successors could match his charisma

This is the best combination of history and entertainment I’ve ever seen on historytube. The jokes are more clever than the usual tropes we see, and the adoption of a particular facet through which to understand the evolving landscape of a period helps tremendously with establishing a cohesive narrative _(of course history is more complex than a series of cause and effect but we all know that)_

Of a sovereign state, yes. But he acceded at the age of 4 and was under a regency for the first eight of his 72 years in power, so Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom beats him in terms of length of actually being proper head of state. Some non-sovereign rulers beat him comfortably - Sobhuza II wins in that department as his reign was largely during the British rule of Swaziland. He's worth a video in himself, I would say.

You havent gotten to the funniest part yet! The part where Louis XIV managed with the change of Balance of powers in the War to come back and therefore stopped peace just a bit longer for more greedy victory to stabilise his claim for his grandson. But while the french king outlived all monarchs of Europe like a boss, his ENTIRE main familly line consisting of his son and his grandsons died in just a few short years leaving shortly before his death a sickly child, AND his grandson from the Spanish side, the same who wouldnt be able to inherit France nor reclaim the lost territory to Austria because of the very legitimate treaty (that and the Orleans line but they do not come from Louis XIV even if true enough the treaty would make the next regent lol, the successor since again Spain doesnt work). The next few years past his death consisted in the Grandson looking at the treaty of the Spanish succession war and sh**ting on it leading to several wars with Austria and a few with France where the punishment always involved "recognised the f***ing treaty" "Yes yes i will for real this time... lol lmao see you in a few years". All until the New King of France with his advisors despite the clear anti Hegemony problem managed to scam Austria out of Italian lands giving it to more familly members of the Spanish lines just to recognise the daughter of the Emperor as the heir "spoiler: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" This whole century is just one long joke and the punchline is the French revolution

Fantastic video! Quick question though Jack: could you please do a video in the future on Louis XIV's Minister of Finance Jean-Baptiste Colbert? He's an incredible and fascinating man in his own right and without his incredible acumen for finance Louis probably couldn't have financed his wars or Versailles.

One minor problem with all of these 17th and 18th century wars is that most of them end on a compromise because none of the sides can achieve a complete victory. This leads to many of them being long, drawn out and immensely expensive affairs and all of that money has to come from somewhere. Hopefully for all of these monarchs the taxpayers don't start resenting the enormous burden placed upon them so that crowns are on the heads their leaders want in charge. They may start getting certain ideas about the whole monarchy thing.
