Look, when it comes to crash landing Starships in ANY Sci-Fi show or movie, it’s hard to walk away without at least scratching the paintwork. In the case of the USS Enterprise-D, they lost the Stardrive and then the saucer section crash-landed on the surface of a nearby planet So all in all, how in the world did they recover the saucer section for use 20 years down the line?

Geordi restoring the Enterprise-D is the 24th (and 25th) century equivalent of a gearhead restoring an old car. A pet project taking many years and being put on hold several times to handle other business. Nice to have the old Spacedock as the “garage.”

Glad they didn't try to fit the D in the upper part of the spacedock. There was always a running joke in TNG that the ship fit through the same spacedoors as the Constitution did during Kirk's era, but it was explained away that the station used by the D was a bigger but identical spacedock (like the one seen with the Binars). Since this is the spacedock that used to be around Earth, the one Kirk used with the 1701 and 1701-A, the D should have been too big to go through the doors on the top section. It was a nice touch making a new bigger bay at the bottom of the spacedock instead.

That entire scene is etched into my memory. Everything about it was... exactly the way it needed to be. Data being happy to see his old chair; I don't know if it was an intended reference or not, but in the First Splinter novels (some of whose writers work for the franchise now), Data exactly re-creates his old Ops station on a ship of his own design. The moment Picard took at the Tactical station; a subtle nod to Tasha. The crack about the carpet; lampshading both the difficulty the production crew had in finding stock for the set, and the eternal question of why the deck of a ship would have rugs. It was the details. And when the Main Computer announced that Picard was in command, I literally broke down in tears when I heard the correct voice: in that moment, the last surviving crewmate - the ship herself - reported for duty.

So weird to call the D old. I still remember when I was a kid and she came out. My head was exploding because we were getting a new Star Trek series. But to find out that it was actually set a century after the TMP period was insane! Then when I first saw the Enterprise-D, I fell in love. She was beautiful... sleek and new. Nothing would ever replace the original Enterprise and the Refit, but the Enterprise-D was a worthy successor.

On occasion, in sci fi, certain ships develop a personality and become characters. For example, in Star Wars, the Millennium Falcon had so much personality that it became a character. In the TOS series of Star Trek, the original Enterprise was treated as a character and thus gained a personality and became a character as well. And during the seven year run of TNG, the Enterprise D became a character as well, watching her demise in Generations was to me, heartbreaking. I won't lie, seeing the Enterprise D returning from the dead brought tears to my eyes, it was like seeing an old friend return. I have to admit, I didn't see any of the publicity photos or anything that hinted at its return prior to seeing that Episode of Picard, so its reveal came quite as a shock to me. It was probably one of the best surprises I have seen in a long time.

Enterprise D was a real beast: survived multiple alien attacks including battle with Borg, then engineering hull exploded but saucer survived that while also landing on planet and remaining mostly intact! Then 30 years later she goes toe to toe with Borg's Mothercube (yeah cool name ;P ) Peak of engineering. Also don't hate on me but D0T drones are brilliant. It would explain how starships are always so quickly repaired and cleaned between episodes. As I remeber from Enterprise, T'Pol revealed that Vulcans used them to explore planets and ships. So during that era Earth Starfleet had non of them, forcing ships to be repaired by hand or in spacedock. After Federation was founded Vulcans shared that tech with rest of races. So D0Ts are cleary Vulcan technology.

The TNG technical manual detailed the procedures of a controlled landing of a saucer section and subsequent recovery by the stardrive section, I assume it was just as simple as getting a ship with sufficient technical manpower and tractor power to stabilize the saucer then tractor it back in orbit, from there it's a simple rig for towing.

The technical manual specifically stated that the aerodynamic and impact stresses would ensure the Saucer would be damaged beyond repair.
@8749236

@@SVSky beyond repairs usually means repairing it does not make sense economically or in terms of efficiency. For example, if a Boeing 747's wing snap at its root on the ground, repairing it will cost more than buying a brand new airplane, it is certainly possible to repair it.

When season 3 was announced I knew she'd be back as well as seeing hints going back to episode 1. She's not just a vessel, but also a beloved character in TNG. I love the lines Geordi and Riker say when she's forever placed at the Fleet Museum: Geordi: "It's difficult to imagine what we would of been without her". Riker: "Different certainly. I liked the idea that came up with the Ships of the Line calendar for how they got the saucer back. Back in August, 2018, the calendar had a shot of the saucer getting salvaged on Veridian, including swapping out the bridge module and pulling the escape pods. I had assumed that the Corps of Engineers pulled as much dead weight off of the saucer while fixing the engines and dampeners enough to let the fleet of tugs be able to lift our favorite Frisbee out of the treeline.

I have a simple question: Why is the Enterprise's bridge configuration in Picard not the same one as in Generations? 😮
@Schindlerphoto
@Schindlerphoto 8 ай бұрын
While I have not heard anything official, here is my theory. According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, the Bridge module was designed to be swapped out, and this had taken place during an upgrade prior to the events of Star Trek Generations. The older Bridge module was probably stored at a Federation facility awaiting disposition, to be recycled or reused, when news was received that the Enterprise has been lost. Starfleet more than likely preserved it to be used as a museum piece. When the saucer of the Enterprise D was recovered, the newer module, being heavily damaged, was discarded and the older module put in its place. Just a theory. Or, as a good friend would always remind me, when I asked questions like this, "It's just a television show, don't read too much into it!"
@LukeAndLeisan

And probably Nostalgia sake too from Geordi. The Generations bridge was only in operation for a very short amount of time. There was also probably more spare parts from the old configuration as other Galaxy ships got upgraded bridges.

"secondary hull just laying around". Yeah, after the dominion war, choices were made. Ships to badly damaged were scrapped, some saucer and engineering sections were miss matched if it could get the ships out quick... any ships that would take longer to repair then to build a replacement... would be scrapyarded. while you could cobble togeather ships from the scrap yards... the federation was already working on new generations of ships so it was easier to "build new" then salvage old. These scrapyards or bone yards. become a dream for meusiums.

And to give the D one more victory over the Borg a second time in 35 years ( beg pardon - 36 years from the time that Picard, Riker and LaForge's last visit on the bridge of the D !) of saving Earth and the Federation - that gave the NCC 1701-D a double distinction of this! Finally doing in the Borg as well!

This is the most in-depth review that I have seen yet! I like how you specifically mention that Geordie LaForge said that the "Engines and Nacelles came from the USS Syracuse." He never once said or implied that the entire secondary hull (aka the stardrive) was that of the USS Syracuse. For all we know, he had his drone techs completely reconstruct a new Stardrive Section for her. Crafting a new stardrive section would be a huge task but not for an army of drones and would only require standard building materials that all Federation ships have used. The engines and nacelles however would be considered outdated technology and likely use specialized materials, so salvaging them from an existing ship makes a lot of sense to me. On another note, when I saw that Deanna took the helm again, I about had a stroke....fearing that she would once again crash the ship into something and Geordie would have to start all over again! lololol

Picard should have used Voyager for the final battle. it would have made in-universe sense to do so. it was smaller, faster, and tougher, than the enterprise, and was a proven borg-killer.hell, it was THE proven borg killer, having taken out more borg than any other ship (and im not including the Endgame maguffin future tech in that assessment)

No. Having the TNG bridge crew of the Enterprise-D piloting the Voyager would have just been stupid and out of place. It wouldn't fit in with the entire premise of all of them coming together for one last mission to save the Federation and Earth.

Where are you getting the idea that the secondary hull was rebuilt? It's obvious that the Syracuse was just a decommissioned Galaxy class, and he just took the secondary hull from. It's nice that we see on screen that the Enterprise-D and Syracuse are listed together in old TNG as I like to think they were built around the same time.
@RoballTV

It's cos Geordie makes it vague himself, he says in the episode that the Syracuse donated the 'engines and nacelles' not the entire secondary hull. But we all know really that the whole secondary hull was the Syracuse, cos it's still labelled as such. XD

@@paulrasmussen8953 I agree, and it would have been a little nod to the fact that Geordi was the captain of the Challenger in another timeline. Plus, the fact that Challenger had a low number and could have been built at the same time as the Enterprise-D making the two parts more compatible.

Seeing the Enterprise D in full up to date VFX with OG bridge crew doing crazy high speed maneuvers and slapping up the Borg tickled my nostalgia spot in just the right place. Honestly it made me so happy and turned me into a kid again. I think however we should let the old girl rest now, she has done her time and her resurrection to save the galaxy one last time was perfect. If they want to do more nostalgia bait then I would bring back the Enterprise E and pair it with Voyager. Seeing those two sleek ships fight side by side with the same treatment that the Enterprise D got in Picard S3 would be pure perfection for me and I would like nothing more than to see that.

in beta canon, after the events of Generations, Galaxy class had received a stardrive retrofit. i shall quote an Excalibur novel, "a hot rod", implying the excalibur was given a minor retrofit. btw in that novel series, originally the excalibur was an ambassador class. the galaxy class Excalibur is set after the dominion war. the novel premise was fighting an "improved" /mutated borg cube (droneless).
