Hi Lea Louise! I too love the staggered rows AND as an OCD- plagued quilter 😂 I love the 'no need to mark' hack. HUGE time saver! My question is about the Christmas rag you showed as an example of piecing a block. How did you get that extra fluffy-raggedy border? Did you just add and snip narrow strips? It's very cute! Thanks for everything!

Oh thank you, Angie, I appreciate you following along! In my early quilting days I would buy yards and yards of fabric just to make king size quilt borders without any seams. You can imagine how much extra yardage I always had piling up!! Those days are gone and I rarely buy yardage anymore. Primarily I use fat quarters and lots of them. It's so much more fun to group similar fabrics and make it interesting. Thanks so much for your comment! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

@@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise yes I certainly do. I bought so much fabric over the past 30 years or so that I now feel guilty for not using more of it. I also bought hundreds of different types of yarn. I knit and crochet baby blankets and many many other projects as gifts. I’m 73 years old now and my ability for making, sewing,quilting,and knitting and crocheting isn’t what it used to be. 😢

Love the off set seams and I love rag quilts. I have made several but I take mine to a laundromat to wash them. I ruined my wash machine at home and had the repair man tell me to stop washing so many old towels. I thought, “I’m not washing old towels.” He was pulling gobs and of strings and such out of my wash machine. It was all that frayed off my rag quilts!

Thanks for the tip, Kathy! You know, that may be why I tend to clip my seams closer than the traditional 1/2-inch. Perhaps those smaller pieces drain better...or I've just been lucky. 😊 Jean quilts seem to release the most and heaviest strings and can be tough on the washers. Dryers can also be a problem if the lint trap isn't cleaned out with rag quilts. Generally I'll dry them for about 20 min and clean out the trap. Then I'll finish drying. Did you know that dryer lint is an awesome fire starter? Either for your fireplace or campfire, it works fantastic! My husband keeps a zip lock of it handy which makes me laugh at how well a rag quilt can repurpose fabrics! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I've been sewing for several years now, but I started with knits and have mostly sewn those the whole time. I've never imagined myself a quilter, but I recently started to gain an interest in it. I felt it might be unattainable on my humble little Brother machine, but this makes me think I can make a quilt! I have a walking foot! Haha! These rag quilts are SO cute too! Flannel in the middle; what a revelation! :) Thanks for posting these videos!

You can do this, Mandi! I started sewing as a child. First it was doll clothes then it was my own clothes. Transitioning to quilting is very easy b/c you already have the sewing skills you need. The biggest change is using a rotary cutter. Once you get the hang of that you'll never go back! Have fun with you walking foot! Have a great New Year and Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

25:26 I wish i had watched this 3 days earlier. My dil asked me to make a quilt for the baby shower memorial day weekend. Ive never made a quilt. I have hand stitched dozens of already pieced quilts but don't like the geometry and wasted fabric of quilts and I dont have a table. I iron on a footstool and use a tv tray for my cutting mat. So i thought a rag quilt would be a good starting quilt. I used 4 inch squares. Its a baby quilt. Everybody says lots of snipping but i never thought about having to line up all of those bity squares. Its turned out so pretty but offsetting wouldve been so so much easier.

I had a bunch of fat quarters that I cut into 8.5 x 10 blocks. I had little waste, even on the yardage I used with the quarters. I was going to offset them but liked it better with seams matching. I watched your prior tutorial on offset seams and loved it, so my next one will be offset. I have pieced blocks and now I feel better about doing that, thanks for showing us all how to make the most of those odd leftover strips and blocks! Happy New Year!

All my quilts are made with 100% cotton, Neva. Most of my fabric is bought at quilt shops which I think is a much higher quality than the discount stores. The fabric in this quilt is made by Moda and is a great quality. My favorite fabric is by Art Gallery Fabrics - it feels better than any other quilt fabric that I use. Next time you're in a quilt shop feel the different fabrics. Find the one you like best and make a small quilt. You may find your own favorite! Thanks for following along. Happy Quilting Lea Louise

I love the quilt you made, I am looking at making my grandkids another bigger one ready for our winter down here in Australia, at lease I have plenty of time to get them done, the last ones I did I made the seams half inch. Should they be wider seams to give a better ruffle, I also used double thickness flannel fabric, like the idea of using cotton fabric top and bottom and the flannel as the centre, loved your video and thank you for showing us your techniques very helpful, take care and look forward your next video.

Great question about the seam allowance, Marianne! The general rule is to use 1/2-inch seam which I've always done. I have found when I'm using all flannel layers I tend to take it a bit larger, almost 3/4-inches. It feels like it holds all 6 layers together better though it will make your quilt a bit smaller. There's no reason not to take a larger seam. You're right that you do get more of a frayed edge but it will be a smaller quilt depending on how many seams you have. Either way your grandkids will love them! Thanks so much for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I like the tutorial and encouraging everyone to use what the they have. I’m very frugal and I love that! I do have a question,,,,,do you ever use batting squares in the middle and just use woven cotton material rather than flannel in the middle? I have done that and it’s a great quilt. Not quite as “fluffy” along the rag edges, but it did fluff a little.
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 5 ай бұрын
Yes, my first quilts had batting squared and they were puffier than using just flannel in the middle. Using just cottons and flannels are much easier for me plus I light the weight of the quilt, too. I've never used just quilting cotton. That would be a nice weight quilt even if the edges don't fray so much. I've also made a rag quilt with just two layers. A cotton top with a flannel backing - super quick and easy! Thanks so much for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Loved your great rag quilt techniques for 2024❤ A rag quilt was my first and favorite kind of quilt-making and now with your new ideas I'll love making them even more:). Could you answer a question for me or point me to a chart to figure out about how much we'd need of each fabric to make certain size quilts? Also I'm guessing that you use a 1/2" seam allowance on all your seams not just the outer perimeter seam. Thank you so much---❤❤❤ your video! Signed, Penny

Glad you'll be using these ideas, Penny! Half-inch seams are what I use, if not even just a bit more. The extra seam allowance is what makes the fluffy frayed edges. You'll enjoy making rag quilts, Karen! The blocks are pieced in rows and then those strips are sewn together. The difference with this quilt is that there are half size blocks on the ends which offsets the seams. Those are the red gingham blocks along the edges. It's makes sewing this quilt so much easier. I'll link another video showing that process in a bit more detail. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions. Happy Quilting, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fqp4iK9nqbW7ZYE.html Lea Louise

Great Video... I have made one rag quilt in my 20 years of quiltmaking..oh! No, that is 23 years! Wow...anyhoo - could you possibly make a video, rag quilt, but using one of those Olfa Cutters, where you sew lines 1" apart, then use that cutter to cut the top layer? @InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 5 ай бұрын
You absolutely can substitute thin or low-loft batting for the middle flannel layer, Cindi. Keep in mind you need to cut it separately from the fabric b/c it needs to be 1-inch smaller. That way it fits inside the seams and won't get caught up in the frayed edges. Hope you get to give it a try! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
