This is what’s going to happen in the coming years. Probs within this decade. Because of the high influx of songs beings submitting n uploaded daily to yearly. They’ll have to restrict it. They’ll do it by targeting the quality of the music being uploaded. Some if not many mixes and masters are not truly too standard. They’ll create a true industry standard mix or master. That if artists sounds don’t match. Their songs won’t be accepted for upload on DSP. This will drastically reduce the amount of music being uploaded. Increasing the market value of music and streaming. High demand low supply, contrary to the high demand and supply we have now...the future 60% of world claim to be artists won’t be ready for, or the consumers.

A mix IMO is subjective. We've all heard a recording from a major label artist and asked WTF as far as recording quality. If they judge a recording for submission on a "standard" parameter on the mix and master who's to say Spotify won't do the same with musician skill level and or the songwritig? If that happens then we're right back at some giant being the gate keeper again. You know damn well the labels will collude with Spotify to only allow their people to post songs because they are afraid of the unsigned indie artists. Maybe we should have two of each streaming service as in Major Label Spotify and Indie Artist Spotify.

Great guest. I'm a rarity but it's all possible guys. I'm touching M's being indy and not having to sell anything to anyone or merch or tour my life away, just make great audio and be listener supported (and it's the APPLE checks that pay best, Spotify is kinda shitty, broken, easy to exploit, and gets tons of spam, which Spotify encourages/allows). The 'artist' route is different than the 'umbrella hybrid label' route where you can operate as hundreds of artists and grow an actual catalog/monetize in a huge way all by yourself. The standard 'artist' route is dissipating fast, peoples search habits are also changing a lot, ppl look up lifestyle/mood terms way more than artist names, like "help me sleep, lofi chill beats, workout music" etc. The changes in the eco-system are also big right now, and with AR/VR/MR/AI platforms launching so much I think we'll see another round of music stores/streaming platforms/ways of incorporating micro content/full music are expanding. More money will be made from existing catalogs as the tech expands (aka TikTok just took me from 200million streams a year on the DSP's to 5-6Billion, they pay sh!tty but the point remains..).

Alot of people say they want to be an artist/musician and even pursue it. I eventually came to ask myself what even is an artist or a musician? I think its fundamental questions like these that help us form an identity and actually pursue this music thing seriously. these q's helped me remind myself that as an artist, its imparative that you live life as a creative entity with enough open endedness to pursue your craft in a million different ways.

❤🍕 the music business is a sector in the economy world wide. Your potential piece of the pie or pizza is getting smaller because of inflation and Streaming generating way less profit then Vinyl sales and cd sales Historically. So streaming bottle necked is the term. The lack of viable ways of music consumption changed from buying hard copy to streaming it, either with ads or paid subscription no ads. Its all about ads. Less about the business of hard copy sales. Hard copy is where the money is. But getting fans to be engaged in 2024 enough to purchase HARD COPY takes engagement and content

"CD's" are still profitable because it is a 'PHYSICAL" product, and "STREAMING" is not. There are individuals that still prefer this "MEDIUM...!" It is a "MEMORABLE" item to have, as a reminder of who your favorite artist is. And, they are making a "COME-BACK" among "INDEPENDENT" artist, because it is a "PHYSICAL" piece of Memorabilia to give to "FANS." And, CD players still exist, and can be brought, unless you have been living under a "ROCK...!" They are rarely sold in stores, and hard to find, but still exist...!

It’s simple. Artists just need to bring something way more valuable to the table than just their Art… Art isn’t something that people can directly apply to their lives, in order to get a tangible result. Give your audience information and/or a tangible product that can transform their lives forever, and they’ll pay high prices for it.

I agree with you, but to be honest with the amount of resources it takes to put out a song (industry standard) its just unthinkable to be tryna exert your energy into offering more. Its all marketing especially for arising artist. What most artist have always struggled with is getting the correct attention.
@444Hz
@444Hz Жыл бұрын
@@hunterslice7468I hear you, I really do. Let me just say this friend… If artists don’t learn how to become die hard entrepreneurs and supply their core audiences with a valuable product, and sell that value at a great price; then there’s no point in entering this industry. The rest of the world has already been doing this in other multi billion dollar industries, yet this industry is so far behind because majority of artists have no business skills whatsoever. We can’t continue to push this industry forward if more emerging Artists don’t start taking notes from others like Nipsey, Tyler The Creator, Russ, LaRussell, Tech N9ne, and a few more. There’s so much room for innovation in this industry, but you can’t innovate without figuring out this business stuff.

You might have more people listening to you than was possible compared to the pre Napster era but you aren't necessarily making much money. On the low end you might have 1k or 2k monthly Spotify listeners which is 1k to 2k more than you would have had in the old days because you weren't signed and on the radio but if you getting only one or two hundred streams a day, you're working another job to supplement your income.

ai got this from this video - Streaming is saving the music industry and it is reaching new all-time highs in annual revenue. Independent artists have benefited from the accessibility and distribution provided by social media and independent distributors. However, independent artists often struggle to stand out among other products and face challenges in gaining visibility. Some artists use high numbers as a measure of success, but it may limit their growth and profitability. Despite the decline in CD players, some artists still offer free CDs as a promotional strategy.

Respectfully, him saying the music industry is shrinking is misleading based on his explanation. Everything is impacted by inflation. Finance 101 teaches you a concept called the time value of money and that states that a dollar today is always worth more than a dollar tomorrow. I understand the idea of bringing guests on to share knowledge, but he should lead with the fact that this is a "theory" and not a fact. Cause in all actuality, gross revenue is indeed the biggest factor in the music industry. Every business in the world would be worth more in the 90s than today based on inflation. But we're in 2023 not 1990, and gross revenue is higher than before. Not trying to overstep and maybe this is what the audience for this platform appreciates. I'm just extremely passionate about our culture and worked in this industry for years. I think it's worth stating the facts as it pertains to our culture and the artists looking to come up in it. Peace and respect - long time supporter of your content for a few years now

Thanks for your thoughts man...to address your statements. "Every business in the world would be worth more in the 90s than today based on inflation. But we're in 2023 not 1990, and gross revenue is higher than before"... Whether or not an industry is shrinking industry or growing is not dependent on inflation. Inflation is simply a variable that goes into consideration when determining if an industry is truly growing or not.
@musicmarketing
@musicmarketing Жыл бұрын
it's not a theory - there are many industries that have gone up relative to the M2 money supply and the CPI. The music industry only found a bottom and started "recovering" at the beginning of the largest expansion of money supply ever.
@musicmarketing
@musicmarketing 8 ай бұрын
Also, I'll note that the "time value of money" has nothing to do with inflation - which should have been something also learned in "Finance 101". The time value of money is related to the implied return of money over time. For instance, the S&P 500 has a stable average annual return of 9%. Based on that 9% implied return floor, $100 today should be worth more like $109 in one year or ~$119 in two years. The implied return dictates the time value of money but it does not account for the value of the currency involved.

Not only is the industry currently at $28b notional, not the $10b figure you proposed, but the music industry's largest dip in notional annual revenue occurred between 1999 and 2007, starting over two decades ago and ending over a decade ago (as opposed to the "dipped HARD a decade ago" claim you made). The music industry's notional annual revenue (notional meaning in terms of dollars, not accounting for the value of the dollar) keeps going up, but its real value is sideways and down when adjusted for the value of a dollar. Shaking MY F***** Head. Do YOUR Research.
