Personally I dont mind the idea of more games being digital but it is strange to see a company like Sony finally helping kill Gamestop with their online marketplace.

I still prefer physical copies. Also these system have stupidly small hard drives. They need 2TB minimum.

I not a big fan of a digital future; this is because of the fact that you don't own your digital media. I love the fact that I can hold a disk in my hand and know damn well that this piece of media is mine and no one else's.

I couldn't have said this any better. As a physical game collector, I hate to think of the prices of physical media if/when this happens. However, even I find myself buying more digital games these days. Price is the major factor over anything else in my book.

I will keep buying physical copies. When you down load a game and it sucks ass like COD IW, you are stuck with it.

Sony doesn't give you a refund if you didn't like the game and you want to return it though. Xbox does. Gamestop lets you buy a game preowned and try it out for 7 days and if you don't like it you get a full refund. What i would do is use gamestop as a rent center. Then check out if the game is cheaper on the ps store. If not, then get it from gamestop.

As someone from a 3rd world coutry in South America where retail games that cost $60 in the US cost us about $120, I worship digital media and downloads. The only way for me to get a $60 game at that price and day one is through digital downloads. When I bought a PS3 I had to create an American account and use an international credit card to buy games that way because my country is so small and insignificant that gaming companies don't care about as a market and so there was no option to choose my country when creating the account. My country was added to the list of countries on the Playstation family of consoles on 2016. Almost 10 years after I created my account back on my PS3. I could make a new account for my country but I'd lose the "collection" of digital media I've bought over the years, AND games are more expensive (around $70, which is a lot better) on my country's store. The reason I'm writting all this is, I don't think GameStop is so bad. I wish I had a retial store where I could walk in and buy a $60 game on day one. You can just ignore all the magazine subscriptions and pre order incentives. Nobody is forcing you to buy those or get ripped of trading your games. I'm also writting this because I don't think Americans know how bad we actually have it in South America. And how you rant about being able to go to a store and buy a console or game on day one at the intended price is such a tragedy. The Nintendo Switch in my country is $700!!! The PS4 was realeased at over $1000! That's having it bad as a gamer. The worst thing that happens to Americans (in terms of gaming) is running out of stock on release.

All GameStop had to to was match the 20% off deal from Best Buy for new releases. Just charge an extra $20 annual fee or whatever to their Powerup Rewards. Anyone with a GameStop location within closer driving distance to them than a Best Buy would have instantly joined. Their continued business ineptitude is truly mind-boggling.

DreamcastGuy, Imagine if all of those lovely games on your shelf had been digital only, then all those great years of PSOne, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2, would be lost to time. Nobody today could experience what it was like back then. Nobody today could create a retro channel and show some old games running because unless the DRM was stripped from every digital download then you wouldn't have the means of showing anyone these classics. Imagine, in 10 years time and you want to return to your PS4/Pro and play some Wipeout, or some Zero Dawn. You sign into your old account and guess what ? It's gone, and so are the games. Even if you have backed them all up, as long as they're full of DRM then you ain't playing none of them in the future. Is this what we all really want ? Here in the UK, if it wasn't for pre-owned high-street stores like CEX, or Pink Planet, I wouldn't game on a PS4 or a Xbox One because games are simply too expensive to buy many over a short period. But because they exist, I can wait it out for a few months then buy pre-owned for half the price they once were. Those moaning at this are mostly the games companies, all moaning because they didn't get a second slice of the pie - i.e. a cut in the second sale. And why should they ? They had their cut in the first sale, they don't get cuts in the 2nd or 3rd sale. Obviously, shady tactics is another thing altogether. I don't live in the US, so I don't really know what Gamestop are really like. But I don't think using Gamestop as a means to end physical media is the right way to it. I think this situation is similar to when e-books came out and Barnes & Noble and Borders started closing stores. Later, however, independent bookstores began to gain in popularity. I can tell you how to find 4 different independently-owned stores that sells games (1 is specifically a gaming store), but I only know of 1 Gamestop and I'm not even sure it's still open.

What is sure is that the day Sony or else decides to go full digital, i will stop supporting them; Only on the PS4 i own more than 110 games in box (most of which were bought brand new, at full price or while in sales), and i love my game collection i started back to the Sega Master System; In that regard, i stopped supporting digital only games because i when i buy a product i don't rent it. That's why the day every constructor decides to release digital only games, i will stop buying their product and have fun with the hundreds games i already own on my multiple platforms, if i play on consoles, that's because they still have those games in box ot else i would be playing on PC.

When you get tired of a game or don't like it you can't trade in a digital copy you are stuck with it so I always buy the disc version so I can trade them in.

I live in Puerto Rico which is a territory of the U.S and here there were about 40 gamestop stores in seperate parts of the island, they are all gone now because of the fact that they have been having issues for longer than people think. Before they left they made to make some proffit and get rid of as much as possible by discouting everything to a point where even triple a titles at the time where as low as 30$ dollars brand new. Personally i miss going to gamestop because i could go in with 20$ dollars and get loads of used games, and accessories for cheap, was a place were everyone in their teens would go to meet up check to see if they had anything nice and then go hang out around where i live and i was more than sad that they closed over here because i had gotten my original xbox, gameboy advance sp, gamecube, xbox 360 and all their games and accessories because you could buy a console and if you had a few dollars to left you could leave with a few used games to start with.

I've been banned on PSN once as a warning I'm pretty sure if it happens again I'm fucked outta some games that I bought on PSN.

Don't forget Amazon gives 20% off new games at launch (with Prime membership). As long as you want all the other services that come with Prime then it's effectively just saving you money. I have two primary reasons for continuing to buy physical. 1. Console downloads make my ISP virtually unusable for anything else, and downloading a 60Gig game takes days. Disks are more convenient as a day 1 purchase. 2. Disks hold value after you buy them. I can sell, trade, and give away my game disks. As far as DRM goes, the physical kind is still infinitely more consumer friendly.

I hope gamestop doesn't die. Because I shop locally at one, and I prefer to have a physical copy of the game whenever possible. Digital is alright, I have a steam account with a large library. But with console games.....I still want a disc whenever I can. Because games are so large now (50gb is almost the norm for a AAA title), you simply can't have all that many on your console. And at that size, they take a while to download even with a fast (150mbit) connection.

I really hope you read this comment and hopefully talk about it for a future video. I end up buying ot of games physical still because of internet data caps in some areas we are still having to deal with companies not giving out unlimited data. This in turn makes it difficult to purchase content online and download it to play. My data cap right now is about 300 gigabytes looking at anything bigger would run me upwards of 100 dollars just to get to 500 gb. I'm not sure entirely if companies are aware of this happening but when i download two 50 gb games or see a sale on steam or ps4 i have to stop and think damn do i really want to use up that much data. This often stops me alone from getting some great deals on psn. Just something to think about i appreciate you taking the time to read this. It would mean all the more if you ranted about this since your channel is a bit bigger in scope than what mine could reach.

I hardly buy off the PS Store. It's a rip off. I will always buy from GameStop. Yeah, GameStop's a rip off with their trade-ins, but they don't over price games like the PS store. Plus, I like physical copies of games.

Tbh I don't mind Gamestop going under. The sooner the better I say. Close to retail prices on used products. Selling used in new cases. Changing prices at the counter. Cheating unknowing customers what they actually looking for. The list is endless.

I feel different about this entire subject. I love you and respect your opinion and the knowledge you bring forth. But I personally enjoy going to Gamestop. I have zero issues with it.

I have a local game store that sells brand new games for $2 lower then GameStops' pre owned price and they sell pre owned games $15 lower then GameStops' pre owned price. Why would I still go to the GameStop?

interesting article. I am wondering though if it was directly linked to PS4 digital copies as surely footfall would drop as well as sales. I imagine it is the same as here in the uk but we have a store called game that is also struggling and trying to get more custom with game exclusive editions that have additional content with the hope other purchases would be made. these however are physical copies. I am wondering if it is possible to get digital exclusive through the store that come with bonuses and then sell other items even if it is such things as snacks memerobila etc.

There's one aspect of switching to all digital that I think most consumers haven't considered - advertising. Without a physical media or a store where ppl talk about such things, it's going to be harder for companies to get their products noticed and sold, especially if they aren't the AAA games with the funds to spend on tons of ads and paid placement on a digital store's front page. But included in the advertising increase that will need to come without physical copies/a dedicated game store to talk up the products, there's going to be a necessary increase in the price of the games - especially for AAA games. There's also the fact that it'll probably be harder for ppl to get into gaming in the first place. Those of us that pay attention to such things and already have the consoles and gaming PCs know how to access info about upcoming games, know what we like, what we don't like, etc... But when it comes to new ppl who might be interested in gaming, it'll be harder to get into. Helicopter parenting is becoming more common these days (in my area, it's mostly very religious/conservative parents terrified of their kids hearing opinions and ideas different from their own - or worse! The dreaded swear words!) - talking your parents into getting a gaming console is much more difficult when they have to go to a big box store where the employees might not know much about the system and less about the games. Those employees won't really talk to the parents to calm their fears about what their kids will encounter when playing games or online. And I've known a lot of parents that won't let their kids play online or even connect it to the internet at all - including the mother of a 14 year old boy. My favorite incident when I worked at Game Stop was when the aforementioned woman had no problem with her son playing a game with violence, blood, gore, sexual themes, but the moment she heard it had strong language in it, she dragged him out of the store screaming at him for picking it out, "You know you're not allowed to play games with swearing in it!" To this day, it was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen. Basically, I think we're going to see a shrinking of the console gaming community once it switches to digital only. And I do think console gaming will see another crash. Mobile, tablet, and PC gaming are solid enough that those fields will probably continue to grow, likely with the more hardcore gamers moving entirely to PC as mobile and tablet are more accessible for casual games by the nature of how you control them. Attempts to publish AAA-type games on mobile have all been pretty bad and I doubt that's going to change any time soon.

I love physical media. You can't get the same excitement from digital. Wanting a game, buying it, holding it in your hands, and that drive home with that hype is amazing! But digital is I press a button and it's added to my library... kind of anti-climatic. Digital is faster and easier, but I will still prefer having that physical copy in my hand.

I live in the UK and the digital stores we have on consoles are stupid, it's almost always cheaper to buy physical copies. New games for download are usually £59.99 while a physical copy from a local store or even Amazon are often £49.99 and sometimes even cheaper.

You hit the nail on the head. Ever since I picked up my PSVR about 4 months ago I bought 52 titles and only about 5 of them were physical. 1 they are getting huge price cuts on the psn store ( up to 80 percent cheaper then GameStop ) and 2 when I'm VR gaming who the hell wants to break immersion and fumble through games. I put all the VR titles in 1 folder and call it one. I'm 💯 percent old-school but I'm learning to adapt to the future as well. Also remember as long as you set your ps4 as your primary you don't need internet or any connections to play your games you own. On the downside I own 2 ps4s and 1 ps4 pro so only my pro is my primary.

The used game market is the last thing they have however that I don't want to see disappear. Hunting around online isn't always preferable. But as a former employee, they're a miserable company.

Holy crap I must agree, I haven't been in gamestop since around April or May and I walked into one of the local ones and more than half the store was dedicated to clothes, hats and stuff like that when a year ago that same store only had maybe one small section for that kind of stuff and the rest for games and consoles and console add-ons and the such. I don't know if them getting rid of Wii U titles due to the Switch or stopping the sell of last gen games in the store is the cause of this, but it just feels weird walking into a Gamestop and most of the store is dedicated to clothes instead of games.

I like to hold the disc in my hand, but if games are going to be cheaper digitally I am all for it.

The problem I have with physical copies is they can easily get scratched or damaged and then what are you going to do? But my only problem with digital copies is that you can't sell them. But I still prefer digital copies anyways.

I got my house broken into and my ps4 and games and TV got stolen. When I got a new one all my digital stuff was still there to download again and the disc are gone forever.

The only problem with digital only is situations where a game suddenly is no longer available. You have no way to get it. This happens a lot with licensed games (Scott Pilgrim being the most notable one) but there are other games that can get delisted for a variety of reasons and at that point the game basically no longer exists.

You might be on to something. Doom 2016 was free for a weekend just recently and the price was cut in half (to $15 from $30) if you had PS+. I would've NEVER looked at Doom twice at $60 or even $30, so this was genius move by Sony and Bethesda. Although I do still want a physical copy of my games, I want good deals too and I'll make that compromise for a cheap purchase.

I could get with PS Plus for the discounts and free games (ones I actually want), but I cannot stand needing it for online multiplayer. I absolutely hate that.

I think companies like Sony, Microsoft and/or Nintendo should come up with a way for you backup your digital games (if we are in an all digital age) to a physical disc or cartridge. Have a system where you can upload the media for only one time and have people who want it physical to buy a disc or cart that allows for the upload. I was thinking about how with the Famicom Disk system, Nintendo had kiosks in stores where you could upload games to a blank disk and take it back home with you to play for a fee ,something similar to that.

Loved this video. I am a fan of physical but at the same time only buy digital if it's a great deal. Also reasons why I hate GameStop is they always try to sell me a open copy of game as new. Happens when they sell me the display copy all the time. And one time I went to buy a action figure but a employee told me the manager was holding it for himself, they even called him and asked if he'd be willing to give it up, didn't work.

I still rather buy games physically. I just hate digital purchases, they take up valuable space, could get accidentally deleted and it just doesn't feel natural or engaging. I rather physically own something where I can admire and take with me when I please, as well as having it display on my self where I can admire them. Digital downloads basically sucks all the magic of owning games for me. There can still be digital games as long as there's an option to buy them physically as well. Many gamers still prefer owning their prized games in person. Just my opinion.

Except here in Australia it's $100 for a game to buy digital day 1, where we have to go to other places to get it more for say $70 to $80 so that is why Digital won't take off here yet until the prices match hard copies

A lot of games are digital only an it drives me crazy there are some I want a physical copy of. The problem with digital only is they can stop you playing whenever they feel like, all it takes is one hacker and you can't access anything you have in storage.

I understand what you are saying and I hope that you can continue to get games on physical disks, but I don't know how long it will last and what security physical disks offer these days. Don't games for the newest consoles still need to be installed on the HDD regardless? Is data not downloaded even when you get a physical copy of the game? What happens to a physical copy of a game which is primarily/only a competitive online experience and the servers shut down? How does DRM affect your ability to play the game? When the services are shut down, will you still be able to play your games? I think that having a physical disk used to mean something, but these days with where technology is going and how integral the internet is becoming to any experience with gaming, I don't know that the physical disk means nearly as much as it used to.

That digital purchase number - is that including PC games? Cuz that would very heavily weight the numbers. Hardcopy game sales are still strong where I live and there's a very good reason for it - abysmal and extremely spotty internet service. And it isn't just rural areas, cities, or even just my state - it's the whole region. And my region (the Midwest) isn't alone in this internet connectivity and speed problem (in the US, of course - other 1st world nations aren't as badly connected to the internet as we are), it's not hard to find this problem pretty much across the US. It took me 23 hours to download Fallout 4 (for PC) - and I bought it on the disc, so it only had to download 2/3rds of the game. That's not the kind of speeds that encourage digital sales. If it had all been on the disc, it would have taken me roughly 2-3 hours to install the game (including the trip to Best Buy and back, 6 hours if you include the fact that I did laundry at my parents' house before heading home - the place I lived at the time didn't have a washer/dryer). But even though I still prefer hardcopy games to digital (when I buy for my few remaining consoles), I'm not really buying games at Game Stop (which is only a short 15 minute walk from my house) anymore. I've shifted to buying from Amazon from the most part - 2 day free shipping, but also there's just better variety. I still have a PS3, but every time I've tried to look at Game Stop's selection, it's just so small, yet still so high priced. I mostly just go into Game Stop these days to ask about upcoming release dates and find out if there's any news. But I definitely don't trust their employees to give me their honest opinions about their products. The manager of the local store actually tried to tell me that PS4's VR was better quality than HTC's Vive... Compared to my current PC (which isn't supported by Vive or Occulus), PS4's probably roughly the same, maybe slightly better. But if I were to build a new PC to Vive or Occulus' specs, there is no fucking way it would be competitive visually with the PS4. Ugh, I miss my old store (and boss) - we were at least honest with our customers. I don't know how many customers that asked us "What's the best version of Skyrim?" that we replied with "PC." Unfortunately, Game Stop corporate loves to run honest employees out of their stores - probably because we didn't try to sell ppl stuff they didn't want. I think our crew lasted about 1 year before they started picking us off one by one.

The problem with games on disks is that if you happen to forget to put the disk back inti the case theres a good chance that the game is gonna break and you’re gonna have to buy another copy of it

my idea for the future is an all digital marketplace with the option to burn a disk or Card ( Switch like game cards) where each game comes with an encrypted key (kinda like bitcoin) tied to the user account who bought the game. the owner can then burn a disk and have the option to set the game as "borrowed" to somebody in their friend's list so that then that friend can use the burned disk on their system. the owner can recalled the game at anytime to continue playing which would disable the burned disks used on other systems. PS4 already does this in a sense with the PS Share thing but that only last for an hour and both users need to be connected.

As a collector you can't beat a physical copy; something to have, hold and put on a shelf on proud display, especially when the cover art can be so good to just look at and can tell a story in itself. For money saving/ value and convenience, downloads are just awesome.
