Awesome that the alyssum makes such a difference. I always plant it among my tomatoes to encourage the little predatory wasps, I didn’t know it deters aphids as well! Great to know!

Andrew Mefferds book is top notch info. I do the same ‘V’ trellis with my indeterminates but plant higher density, 6” spacing in the row with one leader per plant alternating one to the right the next to the left. With cherry tomatoes I do double leaders with 6” spacing per plant because of the extra vigor and smaller leaf size. With determinates I do 1’ spacing and basket weave. White hay tarps in the walkways to reflect light, retain soil moisture and to keep the overall greenhouse temp lower.

Tomatoes & peppers as double leaders. I learned that when frost took above ground peppers. Leave roots & trained regrowth as double leader. Amazing harvest! Covered end of season for extended harvest.

Always fascinating Farmer Jesse! I actually use a similar method in my home garden since I have limited space. I don't have a tunnel so I'm doing exactly what you recommend not to do. I actually started pruning heavily because my plants would always die from fungal infections. I started pruning up from the ground as well as pruning suckers to increase air-flow. It has prevented me from getting wilt for the past 9 or 10 years. I always remove yellowing or spotted leaves immediately which gets me to about July with living plants. In order to get them to my first frost in mid-october I started making my own anti-fungal spray: garlic and cayenne pepper steeped for a day or two in water. I spray it on my plants every 7-10 days or when I see signs of fungal disease starting... That has been a game-changer for me. My plants usually stay healthy up through the first frost as long as I'm consistent and vigilant with the spray. I also prune to 2-3 leaders; it just makes sense when I consider the space usage. I will absolutely have to keep the alyssum in mind. I already love it; maybe I need to plant more!

Another good and timely video. Although our tomatoes are outside and under a shade cloth. We are going to attempt the double leader in growing our tomatoes this year. We also had plans on grows some sweet alyssum as well. As always Thank You for the great videos!

Sorry, Im diverting to bed prep in old cow pasture instead of asking about tomatoes but I dont plan on using about an acre, acre and a half until next year. I have compaction and nutrient deficiencies to over come. I have a question burning a hole in my brain after binging your videos for several days about corn as a cover crop/bed prep crop. Broad fork, plant corn. Allow it to grow to flowering stage and mow it down. Before mowing it down plant a legume/grassy cover crop between the rows and allow it to grow through the corn residue and winter kill it. Of course inocculations of microbes will be applied and a compost mulch after the first couple frosts start killing the legume/grass cover crop. Or something along these lines. Corn for pulling nutrients to the top and biomass. Corn roots to fill gaps in soil from forking and keep it apart. Time to allow corn residue and roots to break down as second cover crop fixes nitrogen to the soil. This has been bugging me for several days now not knowing if it will work or not. Now, if you dont know if this will work should I do it for the science and small farmers everywhere?

We do double leaders on our 300 tomato plants. We've been doing this for 5 years now. I would say we get pretty close to double the weight of produce compared to the one year that we did single leaders. Of course this all depends on the quality your soil, your plants, and your care. We do not experience any less growth out of our Tomatoes doing double leaders. We still have to prune and manage the plant just as if it was two plants

Research papers from universities say single leaders give higher quality individual tomatoes, good for fancy heirloom, while double triple and quad leader all give about the same if accounted for the space used

I’m not a pro but I realized outside it’s more of an abundant harvest not growing vertically. Plants like shade and moisture to grow. You get less morning dew moisture and less shade growing vertically. You save space yes but that space is needed for more plants to equal the same harvest. I’d rather have one plant take up 6 feet and give me 128 tomatoes throughout the whole season then 6 plants giving me 20 each

Cannot let them grow on the ground here...goodness. Way to damp and too much blight..wilt..bugs..everything. Tried it one lonely year with a few and maybe got 2 or 3 tomatoes.

@@lindawilbert3202 I let them grow laterally on a ground trellis for support and on fences. They grow just like a vine,but yes I’ve also grown them straight on the ground

@@RaoneG34 the more non fruiting branches left on the plants is more nutrient usage in a faster time frame converting to a speedier growth the more you stress the plant the more energy is redirected into healing and other things before it’s returned to focus on whatever growth is left. If you just leave it alone you’ll have more energy left in the plant to grow. Once you see bloom heads start to appear then you can start pruning if you wish. I just don’t see the need to do anything unnatural to a plant. A plant can only produce naturally what it can hold. So the stronger your plant the more and bigger fruit you’ll receive.
