In the African Sahel a country called Niger bordering the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world, is stopping desertification and turning is deserts into an Oasis.
Regenerative Agriculture is leading the way with a technique called Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration or FMNR
FMNR was pioneered in the 1980s by Tony Rinaudo and Australian Agronomist who is widely known as the forest maker. The innovative technique has been adopted by local farmers through peer to peer learning making it cost effective and easy to implement. Over the last 40 years the visual results and the data have shown FMNR has been extremely successful in turning desert into farmland. It has regenerated 5 million hectors of degraded land, 200 million trees have been restored and has benefited 2.5 million people increasing house hold income by 18-24% the available arable land has doubled since the severe droughts of the 1970s and tree density has 10x since its all time low in the 1980s.
This is an extraordinary achievement considering Niger only receives on average 6.5 inches of rainfall a year and 80% of the country is considered a desert. The country has been effected by severe droughts and suffered huge land loss over the last decades and as a consequence Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. However Niger has been turning this around, by turning its deserts into a farmland oasis through the technique of FMNR which you will learn more about in this video.

Since 1 third of the world is desert I think this is a great initiative and its all done naturally with regenerative agriculture unlike some other videos I've seen floating around about Saudi Arabia regreening the desert with horrible chemicals. This isn't good. It would be much much better to either, A, conserve the forests we already have, or B, plant native tree's in area's that have been deforested. The reason why this isn't going to help against climate change is because of color reflection. Yellow-white is more reflective on the heat from sun, while green takes in more heat from the sun. If you are planting this in the desert, while you are turning carbon into oxygen, your heating up the planet more, and wasting lots of water.

I did a similar thing on a much smaller scale. More than 30 years ago we moved into a suburban house with a typical grass lawn. In spite of running the air conditioner 24 hours a day from February to October, the inside of the house was virtually unlivable. The front door on the Eastern side of the house would get so hot it would burn your hand if you touched it. I initially planted 60 hardwood trees on the property surrounding the house, and 90 Holly bushes around the perimeter of the property. The trees absorbed and blocked the direct sunlight hitting the walls and roof and the Holly bushes blocked the reflected sunlight bouncing from the lawn into the walls of the house. Now, 30+ years later, over a hundred additional trees have come up naturally, The house stays comfortable all year long and the natural wooded area surrounding the house is self maintaining. The woods require no mowing, weeding, chemicals or watering. In the mid summer months ,when there are periods of drought, the neighbors grass lawns die and turn brown while our yard is still green. Our electric bill went from almost $400.00 a month to $89.00 a month and there are no more lawn care costs.

In my case it paid for the initial cost of the house many times over.

We just did this to our front yard. It faces south. Saving more money to do some more next year. It will be a few years before the trees will be big enough to benefit us. With Global warming I wish everyone would plant more trees for shade. If everyone would do a little something in their own part of the world, it would greatly help the whole.

Laurie Crater, A house can be thought of as having walls and a roof. The roof receives only direct sunlight while the walls receive direct sunlight plus reflected sunlight from the lawn. That is why the shrubs and bushes were critical in reducing the heat hitting the house. I planted Buford Hollies because they did not require any human intervention to thrive.

Texan with no relevant knowledge, but I think the major difference between the Sahara and Australia's deserts is Aus deserts are much, much older than the Sahara. I'm not up on all the ways this makes a difference, but i would think the same techniques used in desertiying or recently desertified areas might not be as effective there and might not be a good idea.

This is so amazing and inspiring. 2 months ago I attended the Graziers Conference in Pennsylvania and saw a guy who was restoring the desert in Mexico by capturing rainfall and grazing cattle, and in 6 years or so, it turned from desert to prairie and the rains came more. Also there was a guy there with a company called Trees for Graziers and he was planting black locust in grazing fields and it was improving everything, and giving the cattle pods to eat in the fall after the grass stopped growing. The cattle beating their hooves and pooping and peeing does amazing things to the microbiome of the soil. The trees do other things like some shade, roots hold moisture. We just had farming wrong and this all can be corrected with education world wide. At least we can try. Traditional farming makes deserts. That's where the dust bowls came from in the US back in the day.

I met Tony in 1989 when I was working for USAID as Natural Resources Management Specialist in Niger and was immediately impressed by the work he was doing. He continues to promote FMNR to this day and it is really encouraging to see the worldwide spread and impact of this simple practice. The part I love the most is how the practice is passed along from farmer-to-farmer, peer-to-peer, with a minimum of costly project administration expenses, so typical of the many other well-intentioned, but less effective efforts.

I don't think so, but it's a nice idea.its to late for humanity and people, mother earth is done with us, and nobody who understands what it is to respect and share to the good of the one who gives everything life. Just like the indigenous peoples of mother earth and their relations with everything alive. From a tree, to a rock. From salmon, to the bears that live though the winter by fatting up, so they can sleep all winter by hibernation. Did you know that before Columbus, there were 60 million indigenous people in the Americas,? Along with 90 million bison running were ever they wanted to. Thanks to the great spirit for saving just enough of each. So they'll be ready to start again, at what they had already done for tens of thousands of years before Columbus. And mother earth just can't seem to get rid of old white men fast enough. Should have done that along long time ago. Kerry Grant luvs mother earth and not pludoctats fracking narssistic psyopathic autocrats.

You have parking lots everywhere, streets that are multiple lanes wide, and plenty of other structures made entirely of concrete. For the spaces that aren't concrete, they are usually nothing but grass, kept only a few inches high, with no other plant species growing there. This can be especially true in suburban residential areas; as far as I know, insurance companies are happier if you have nothing but grass in your yards. The concrete alone makes everything get hotter under the sun. This is certainly not the right way to go in regards to Global Warming, but it seems to make the

Worth mentioning that the degradation referenced, here, stems from a 1970's decision by the World Bank, telling countries of the Sahel to convert their prime agricultural land to cotton production to finance their debts. Food production then moved onto unsuitable soils, pushing pastoralists even further afield. Voila, soil degradation, forest destruction and desertification, all of which produced the regional famines of the mid- and late-70's. Glad the banks got their money, though, because otherwise what suffering might befall the wealthy of the world?

This is a good point. History has taught us that cotton production is very taxing on the soil. Look at Georgia in the USA. After a little over a century of large scale cotton production in soil that was ideal for it to begin with it got to the point where crops were failing all the time. Although Dr. Carver was able to turn it around there, cotton farmers there did have to adopt Dr. Carver's methods to really change things at the time.

I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days. Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians. And I know that the record which I make is true; and I make it with mine own hand; and I make it according to my knowledge". 1 Nephi 1-3 Hello friends, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The verses above are the first three verses in The Book of Mormon. I know this probably isn't the most ideal place to talk about religion but I really do want you to know that God loves you. You may not love Him or care about Him at all, but He still will continue to love you. You are a beloved son or daughter of God. He knows you personally and He truly and deeply desires for your happiness. He loves everyone who has every lived on this earth, with a perfect equal love regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, faith and values and beliefs. The Lord loves you more than you can think or comprehend. "He inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile" 2 Nephi. He is our loving, caring Heavenly Father. We are literally His children and creations. When we were in the womb, he knew about us" Jerimiah 4:5. He knitted us and we were created in His image. I testify to you that you and I are not a mistake. He knows the very moment when we stand and when we sit. He is familiar with all our ways and knows us personally who we are. The hairs on our very head are numbered. God loved us so much, He sent His Only Begotten Son for us, that we may be able to return and dwell in the presence of God again. The Lord has not forgotten about us even when it feels like He has. He will never forsake us. When we are happy, He and His angels rejoice alongside us. When we are sad, He heals us and lifts us up from our trials. He has always been there for us. He has always been our loving, compassionate Heavenly Father and God. Will we always be His children and people? I testify to you that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. Both love you exceedingly and rejoice when you are happy. They both love you so much. They love you with a love unfeigned. They will never ever stop doing good unto you. I know that The Book of Mormon is true. "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost". Moroni 10:4 I promise and testify to you, that if you will read The Book of Mormon, ponder on its message and ask God if it is not true, you will come to know of its truthfulness, whether its true or not true. Remember my friends that God loves you with all his heart, might mind, soul and strength. He wants you to be happy. He knows what you are going through and dealing with right now. He desires for you to return back to Him. Unfortunately, He has been misrepresented and seen as a cruel and angry God who anticipates for us to slip and writes down every mistake we make waiting to punish us by those who do not know or know Him fully. My friends, God has stored many opportunities and blessings for you. He is incredibly eager and desires with all His heart to bless you abundantly. He wants you to live with Him again. He only wants the best for you and your well being. He wants to experience everlasting joy and indescribable happiness in this life and in the life to come. He wants you to partake of His goodness and come and follow Him. The Lord does not care how early or late you decide to come unto Him. I testify to you that if you have strayed and wondered off the path that there is peace and hope in Jesus Christ, The Savior of the world. The Lord accepts those who come unto Him whether your early, late or just in time who desire to change. The Lord will accept you wholeheartedly and forgive you if you are willing to change. The Lord will welcome you and will always be ready to embrace you with open arms. The Lord will lift us up in our trials and use us to bless the lives of those around us if we are willing to change. If you desire to learn more, you are always welcome to visit comeuntochrist.org. There you will learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ and our core beliefs and values. If you have taken the time to read The Book of Mormon and this comment, thank you. It takes a huge leap of faith and a lot of courage to muster enough faith to read in the Book of Mormon and to believe in something in a personage that you may never see in this lifetime. Although we may not be able to see God and Jesus Christ in this life, I testify to you that they are real. They do truly exist. I promise you that if you will pray to know of their existence, you will come to know whether they exist or have been made up. You are my friends. The Lord loves you unconditionally and is fully aware of you and despite all our weaknesses and shortcomings, he still loves us and will forgive us if we will humble ourselves before Him and diligently seek correction and do whatever is needed to repent. Remember that The Lord is always available to talk to through prayer 24/7. No question sounds too silly for Him. James wrote, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" James 1:5. If you must know whether or not something is true and uplifting, or evil and deceptive, you can always pray to God. He will help you know what the truth is and what is not the truth. He will never be too busy to talk to. He will give you strength you need to overcome and conquer your temptations and will give you the strength you need to endure through your trials and afflictions. Paul said that The Lord will not give you temptations that you cannot resist, but that in your temptations, He will provide a way for you to resist, overcome and conquer them. He will provide a way. He wants to bless you and reward you abundantly in Spiritual and physical things. The Lord knows you and will not forget you. You are loved. You are utterly amazing. You have incredible potential. You are not forgotten or ever will be forgotten or forsaken. You are special. You are unique. You really are one of a kind. You have been reserved for this time and The Lord needs you on His side. It just simply would not be the same without you. That is just how much the Lord need you on His side. Thank you dearly for your time

This may be an old video, but I just read an article in National Geographic and what is presented here seems true and honest. Also according to National Geographic, before colonialism farmers in the Sahel, managed their trees, and the stumps left after some trees were cut down for wood. They did not pull the stumps completely up or clear cut large tracks trees for agriculture they, always left the stumps. These tree stumps, would regrow sprouts from the stumps. When the French colonized Niger, they intended for Niger to provide food commodities to sell on the open market. So they encouraged farmers to pull up stumps and then you would have neat lines of food commodity crops to sell. No shade and no nutrients returning to soil, when it rained the water would not penetrate to the water table, because the mechanism to allow it to happen was removed. All Niger needed, was to remember the roots (literally), living in the Sahel and building a civilization there is no easy feet, and these people did it, because they understood the cycles of Nature and all it took was to remember traditional farming techniques. Now all Africa and all Africans have to do is remember the food crops that sustained their civilizations and Kingdoms, and not see their traditional foods as peasant (poor people) food and Africa will truly return to its greatness. Here is hoping for that day, for all who will contend Africans bellow the Sahara were all hunter gather societies here are some links to dispel that myth. oxfordre.com/view/10.1093/acrefore/9780199389414.001.0001/acrefore-9780199389414-e-179 www.khanacademy.org/humanities/big-history-project/agriculture-civilization/first-cities-appear/a/the-origin-of-agriculture-in-africa On the second link, the archeological record is constantly being updated and it is believe that agriculture (farming may have started much earlier), in any case it is good to remember ones roots and find a way to meld modernity with ancient practices. Its not a either or decision. www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/how-farmers-in-earths-least-developed-country-grew-200-million-trees#:~:text=200%20million%20trees-,How%20farmers%20in%20Earth's%20least%20developed%20country%20grew%20200%20million,the%20Maradi%20region%20of%20Niger.

I live in an environment that is the antithesis of the Sahara yet there was a lot of take away for me, from this video. Thank you. I live in Alaska. Which strange enough, much of it is in fact is classified as a desert. There's not a lot of precipitation. What we do get tends to stays. Tending to our enviroment and stewarding our wilderness is part of being an Alaskan. These are principles I grew up with. My dad just called it good stewardship. I don't think it should be relegated to people living in remote and diverse environments. Help the world you live in grow. Be part of the world where ever you are. It changes you.
