It will soon be a year since the Russian army invaded Ukraine. The consequences are devastating: entire cities have been destroyed, fields and houses mined, millions have fled, human lives have been destroyed. But the war has not only changed Ukraine itself, but the whole of Europe, probably even the whole world, says Ivan Krastev.

The decisive factor is not only what happens on the battlefield, but also who votes for which party. The elections in the USA, Russia, Poland and Ukraine, but also in Taiwan, cast their long shadows ahead.
The Bulgarian-born political scientist Ivan Krastev, who lives in Vienna and Sofia and is one of the most respected voices when it comes to analysing the political fault lines of this time, sees a global crisis of liberalism looming that will be decided at the ballot box and not in Ukraine.
How do people as a society remain resilient in the crisis? What feeds liberalism and why is it crucial to understand Eastern Europe in order to understand the world?

Another food for thought, thank you, Sternstunde Philosophie. What prof. Krastev is commenting on is highly interesting, hence the lack of a deeper insight makes it a bit shallow in my opinion. First, the peaceful power change of 1989 wasn't caused by the unknown historical whirlwind, but by Polish labourers helped by Polish intellectuals for the peaceful existence of all people. Secondly, it was neither an unknown History whirlwind, nor a political agenda, but the inner values of Polish people who one by one and en masse decided to open their homes and give a shelter and protect those vulnerable flying from the atrocities of the Russian war homicide. Pardon my French, but the honourable guest, who is of Bulgarian nationality, as a Bulgarian did not develop the deeper insight to comprehend and comment the Polish heart and spirit values rooted deeply in the Christian love commandment, not only read, but passed hereditarily and lived out of our genes. Summing up, it is fully correct Mazurek Dąbrowskiego, our national anthem starts with the words: "Poland has not perished yet...", but the next line is clarifying the context "... So long as we still live. What the foreign force has taken from us, We shall with sabre retrieve..." To my mind, a Bulgarian who has never lived amongst us should have never publicly put our values in question to ridicule Polish geopolitical situation. Wien has probably taught you how to ignore certain issues in a charming manner, but one thing should be put into a spotlight: Was Polen betrifft verstehen Sie Bahnhoff.
