Discover the engineering innovations that made building Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, possible.
--
In 2004, construction began on a new building in Dubai, promising a revolutionary design that would dwarf the rest of the world’s skyscrapers. Five years later, the 828-meter Burj Khalifa was complete, surpassing the previous record-holder by over 60%. What innovations allowed for such a huge leap in height? Alex Gendler digs into the architecture of this unprecedented project.

2 lives lost, only one of them was an accident, they were paid 10 dollars for 12 hours of work, they weren't allowed to leave because the supervisors withheld their passports from them. Don't say ''well, only a life was lost'', as if those two lives meant nothing, as if their hard and grueling work meant nothing, as if the way they we're treated meant nothing. They were barely treated like workers, more like slaves.

I used to work at the Petronas Twin Towers. Every Friday, the facility managers would conduct special prayer sessions (I can’t remember what it’s called) to appease the spirits of the workers who died constructing the building. Apparently, they even had the Towers blessed by religious personages on regular basis. Many have claimed to encounter ghosts but I myself never did.

So they planned 3 major express elevators, like you mentioned, 3 major floors ( I don't remember i think 42 , 120 ad so on) with a dozen of minor elevators to complete the Trip. I mean the people who made this miraculous tower are great i feel really sorry for their suffer...

i've been to Dubai several times, and one thing i can say (being related to this video) is there is A LOT of skyscrapers. They are so tall you have to turn your head all the way up in order to see tops of the buildings. If you keep your look straight it is very simmilar, as someone just stretched them out of sight. It gets even worse with Burj Khalifa, as if you stand near its foundation (The Dubai Fountain at one of Dubai Mall exit in my case) because it feels like someone keeps stretching it out of sight, until you are almost looking straight at sky, you can barely see top of it. It was mindblowing to remember that you are standing next to 828 meter building.

Louis CK said something like this... every incredible human achievement in history, was done with slaves. They just threw human death and suffering at something until it was finished. Of course, he’s a comedian and I don’t agree with him, well not entirely, but I don’t think this building could’ve been affordable if not for the way it was built.

What goes unspoken here--practically all the major players in building the tallest structure in the world were South Asian. There's the theoretician behind the tubular design concept that made the Burj Khalifa a reality, Fazlur Rahman Khan. Then the people who actually put in the sweat to build it. Fascinating, and interesting to know that one of the people most responsible for the way our modern cities look is someone I've never heard of--Mr. Rahman Khan.

Company I work for at the time USG supplied the sheet rock, and studs for the building. Watched video were they used a plumb Bob in order to keep the building center onto itself. Had me chuckling. The amount of money tossed into the project and it took $20 worth of string to keep billions of dollars in line.

It would be really nice if you could explain more how these designs disperse the forces for example, why does each wing's weight carry the other two? You don't have to include it in the video, but maybe just include such facts on you website
