I agree, great video. I think my problem is feeling like my arms need to be straight at impact, timed with a snapping of the wrist. I just can't seem to grasp the concept of maintaining a bent right arm and how much to be conscious of some release of the hands. I used to be a bogey golfer but now I'm a complete mess on the verge of giving it up

This is the ONE and ONLY video that changed my swing. I am 42 and this is the year that I decided to actually learn how to golf. I did a few times as a teen and had a horrible slice. Instructors couldn't help. I quit. I stayed away from golf for 25 years. Avoided it. Hated it. I knew what my ball path was and it was not fun. This year my wife (good golfer) and I (bad) decided to spend more time golfing. I dedicated a lot of time at the range to try and learn. I have watched countless videos. I have learned A LOT. I have corrected a lot. That being said there was some inconsistency until I saw THIS video. This absolutely changed my swing. It changed my contact. It changed my consistency. Without this video, explanation of wrist position and what I am trying to achieve I would not have had success. Many other videos offers techniques to correct on the downswing the issues that were already present. This video highlighted the absolute secret to fixing slices, hitting it straight both driver and irons and making golf so much more enjoyable. Thank you so much!!!!

This lead wrist flexion tutorial starting at about 12:00 in video is only thing I thought about in round today and my usual blocks and flippy hooks disappeared. My score was SIXTEEN strokes better than my last round! I’ve had traditional pros over 30 years never describe this issue and have been very frustrated about my driver control for 7+ years. Today I was very much in control off the tee. I’m not a teacher, but have to believe that having a student realize your concept and see improvement almost immediately must feel like a purely struck one iron. Thank you Pro!

"Wrist hinge" has been my one most productive swing thought for a few years, leading to straighter, longer and more consistent shots throughout my game. But I've always wondered about the degree of wrist extension/flexion at the top of the swing. You explain the dynamics of this perfectly here, showing that the wrists move in two distinct planes with innumerable variations that all affect the club face at impact. Following your coaching, the feeling I'm working on now is a "wrist hinge" with more lateral than vertical motion. Your drill that shows how to create this by holding the club in front of you, flexing the left wrist and bending the right one back beneath, then simply bending over to the ball is brilliant. Totally different way thinking about wrist action. Super helpful, thanks!

Out of the countless golf lessons I have had, many were either a waste of time and money or down right wrong. This guy has an analytical mind that knows how to explain and demonstrate a part of the swing that is critical to good ball striking. Many thanks, Rob

Hi Rob, thank you so much for this video. I'm nearly 60 and just returned to golf in the last few years after playing in my late teens and early 20s. Since starting again, I've struggled with inconsistent heel strikes and with early extension/flipping and realise from videos that I have a cup in my left wrist at the top and tend to be too steep on the downswing. Whilst my game has improved a lot in the past 9 months (I'm back down to 11 now), I still battle with these problems. This video however explained so much to me - I realise now that whilst I keep my left wrist flat for much of the backswing, it is the last bit of 'hinge' at the top that is creating the cupping. After watching your video and paying special attention not to allow that last bit of hinge, all of a sudden I had a sense of the club coming almost from behind me on the downswing and I was able to rotate in an unimpeded way through the ball. The change to impact was astounding. Thank you so much - why has nobody ever explained this before? I am an avid subscriber now.

Hi Rob. I was a paid up member of the L to L for two full years. I’m a good golfer. Yet over the past three years I hooked everything. Searching, forever searching for the little draw, knowing all the while that with the little draw lurks the hook! I have now been with the S/T system for about 14 months. Yes the hook is gone, mostly slight pushes to the right of the target. The driver, for now a slight fade. This video on the movement of the wrists is absolutely the best instruction that I have ever listened to and watched. The detail is simple, easily understood, especially when you combine your backswing video instructions along with this video. I am one hundred percent into Stack and Tilt now. Twenty five years ago I tried the S/T although half heartedly and was told by the pro that I worked for that this would never work. Today, for me its given me a new start, I’m excited about my swing and can’t wait for the 2021 season to begin. I will continue to watch all of the S/T videos and pass them along to my inquisitive golfing buddies and playing partners. Now let’s talk a bit more about driving the flying wrist wedge through the ball. Thank you. Jerry. Hamilton Ontario.

This is literally one of the keys to golf. I remember the day that it dawned on me to cock the right wrist back, which also flattens the left wrist(or slightly bows it). I used to be just as you described…. I pictured cocking the wrists “up”. This did just like you said…. Shaft across the line at the top. Club face too open. Club shaft standing up(too steep) on the downswing. And, inconsistent strike. I managed to play 70’s golf, but with a high weak fade. Now…. I cock the right wrist BACK, and simply flatten the lead wrist. I do this early in my takeaway, and then don’t even think about my wrists anymore. I’ll then allow the forearms to naturally rotate, which lets the shaft follow its natural plane(glove logo up at about a 45* angle at the top). Then, just rotate through the ball, allowing the forearms to naturally rotate through impact, and square the face. I’m now a near scratch player, hit the ball further, and strike it much better, with that compression and hissing sound with my irons. My swing feels more free, and unrestricted than ever before. Listen to this man. He’s the best on KZfaq.

Just came across this video and it is EXCELLENT! I have been playing for 20 years, (46 years old now) and have managed to get ok (shooting in low 80's) I have plenty of club head speed but always lacked consistency. Well I have been hinging my wrists WRONG for the past 20 years! And I have thought about it in the past, thinking why would I open the club face just to hinge my wrists upward and then have to close the clubface during the downswing? Just seems like to many variables to control! But I kept doing it because I thought it was correct and instructor's said that is the way to do it. My misses are blocks to the right or severe hooks, which tells me my club path is ok (in to out) but based on where the clubface is at impact (square to path = block, or closed to path = hook) determined my shot, which was all based on timing and closing the clubface through impact. With this "new" wrist hinge method I don't have to think about opening and closing the clubface only bending the right hand back. Such a great Lesson!!!! I have played hockey in the past, and when you take a slap shot this is how your wrists work! The blade of the stick remains square to your path, you would never see a hockey player open the blade during the backswing just to close the blade during the downswing. So I tried taking a slap shot with my golf club (not actually hit a ball). If you move your right hand down onto the shaft and take a "slap shot" the wrists will naturally work correctly. Now work your right hand slowly taking "slap shots" along the way until your right hand is next to your left on the grip (use10 finger grip) and take another slap shot keeping same wrist action, you will be amazed at how this feels and this is the CORRECT wrist movement!! What do you think Rob?

I have taken lessons from several different instructors throughout the years, and I tell them my wrists don’t feel right in the backswing. But they invariably want to focus on something else. agree the best lesson I have seen. understanding that the wrists are always moving and working to discover the proper movement is really unbelievable tip. By adjusting the wrist movement on the upswing not only sets up the wrists on the downswing but also, for me, slows the backswing allowing for the proper sequence for the downswing. Your videos which does the swing in detail are outstanding. The one about the movement of the head has allowed me to make the full backswing. Thanks!

This is the exact problem I've had golfing for 40+ years. My last lesson (Golftec BTW) corrected 2 major flaws of my inconsistency of ball striking...opening the club face rather than keeping it square and bending my left knee inward rather than towards my toe. This move improved my overall rotation as keeping the wrists/club head in line, produced forward shaft lean, better compression and striking properly against the left side at impact. At first it felt quite awkward but now feels natural. The turning of the wrists downward slightly felt very strange but now I focus on that movement at the beginning of my downswing...it is all so incremental and difficult to describe but you've done an excellent job at explaining this movement. It seemed no matter how much I tried to strike the ground after the ball, it was literally hit or miss. The results were fat or thin shots. When seeing on camera that I was actually "flipping" the club head to "catch up", I was so surprised because it was the very thing I was attempting to avoid. Thankfully, the problem is now corrected and your teaching on this wrist movement has confirmed my previous lesson. Thank you Rob. Excellent as always.

Yes exactly! To achieve the uncocking action of cupped wrist is the opposite direction to the forearm movement which slows it down, a bit like backhand slapping someone starting with a cupped wrist is far slower than starting with a bowed ar flat wrist.

Hi Rob I, like many golfers misunderstood the way the wrists work in the backswing for 50 years. My first lesson with Darren Hopwood bought this home with a bang.like most people I had fanned the club open into a very extended position as you describe,he made me realise that I was dead in the water by p2 and p3,there is no easy consistant way back from this position, its luck if you hit any kind of sensible shot due to the amount of distance the club has to travel on the downswing ,there simply isn't enough time without a flicking action. To get used to the correct position Darren got me to feel like I was curling my hands under in the first part of the backswing this got me on a better plane and flexed wrist posion very quickly. This initially felt very weird having done opposite for so long . After a while it became more comfortable and now 8 months down the road I do this without thinking. Making any movement takes quite a long time because its not only the way your body moves but also your brain has to reprogram the new action and loose the old. Perseverance and repartition with the correct moves will prove fruitfull i can vouch for this at age 68 ,you are not to old to make change it just takes a little longer. Rob thanks for sharing this vital information, again pure gold peter

Rob, I can't believe how easy you made the explanation of our wrist. Now I understand completely what wrist hinge is, and how it works, how limited we are. But, more importantly, you've helped me to understand what problem the wrist "cup" creates. I hope this will help me be more accurate on my striking the ball. My only other problem is the loss of distance I now have. I will be 70 yrs. old next month, but my drives are, at maximum, only 200. My driver and 3-wood are almost exactly the same distance, so I use my 3-wood most often off the tee. I agree with all your other viewers, and I have subscribed, and have rung the bell. Rob I stumbled onto your website about the wrist action on the downswing. I have been slicing my drives and pushing my irons. But especially slicing my drives and then taking bogies and double bogies, very frustrating. I tried all kinds of tips on the internet but nothing worked and was surper frustrated. I should be in the high 70's but usually score mid to high 80's. Like your video points out I have been hinging my wrist all wrong causing this slice and taking distance of my ball striking. I went out the other day and tried your wrist manueuver and my surprise I was not only not sliceing but striking the ball straight, higher and longer. Some of the best drives I can remember. Can't tell you how good this felt and I can draw the ball as well. This simple wrist action sloved my whole problem I have been dealing with for several years. At the range I practiced triggering wrists vertically on back swing, then flattened wrists at top laterally, keeps everything in the slot on plane. With irons ball is popping. With driver ball is exploding and straight. I had fade or slice action before and struggled to get 246 yards max. Now I anticipate it will be going 280ish + consistently. Crazy!

Lost my swing about 4 years ago and have been trying to find it. I can tell something was wrong in my feel making a pass at the ball. Same weak right ball flight you said. I’ve gotten lessons and no one has addressed this issue I knew I had thank you!!! I kind of feel like this is a mistake most golfers make because it feels easy to create the lag.

Thanks Rob. I've watched way too many videos on how the wrists 'should' work in the golf swing but this is by far the best. I've been moving them pretty much as you advise but never really understood why or how it works. Clubface control is so important and when you've got it at a good level the confidence, enjoyment and scores flourish. You have a great teaching style and always enjoy your videos.

Rob, Excellent demonstration. I am a visual learner, and your teaching method with two views was helpful. My model for swing an iron is pro Steve Stricker. My thought process requires a connected swing. When I address the ball, I draw my elbows toward each other. This forces the arms to move with the rotation of the shoulders around the spine. The wrists stay in the flat flexon position throughout the swing. I use a slow takeaway, coiling around the right hip, and it feels like the club is aligned line with my left arm (I am a right handed player) throughout the swing. My right elbow locks into position in front of my right hip and upon weight shifting to my left side, a natural rotation of the body occurs. The downswing thought is to extend the left arm to maintain a wide radius, it is not a downward pull. Lag is not something I consider, but it happens as a result of a proper grip and the speed of the boy's rotation. The club is lightly held so that it swings due to its momentum in a path toward the target. I see more and more pro golfers using this type of swing for their iron shots into the green because it keeps the wrists still and the face angle of the club on target. It also results in more repeatable distances from specific clubs. Could you demonstrate a swing like Strickers and help me replicate his method?

Outstanding video! The best explanation of wrist motion and position I have seen. I have taken many lessons where the pro had me focus on club face position and forward shaft lean to correct my flipping. None ever talked about the proper use of the wrists during the swing. Thank you.

Thank you Rob for confirming what I have been working on for the last 4-months. Frustrated by years of inconsistency, I decided to focus on my grip and wrist work, figuring that if I do that everything else will come together. The most difficult issue has been; training my wrist and my mind to these changes. First I found that standing tall at address (Adam Scott) allows my clubs' lie to sit correct and the shaft-line to match that of my shaft-line at the top of my swing. The one thing that has helped me get my shaft line right is to start my swing with my elbows, arms and wrists moving together with my shoulders and upper body until the upper body stops and the shoulders, arms continue and the lead wrist finishes in the Flexion position. What I have concluded is that trailing wrist must be in control in order to fall into the trailing wrist Extension needed. That has been a challenge.

Once again Rob provides a great explanation for what’s going on with the clubface if you’re trying to ‘hinge’ your wrists for more lag but not precise/specific in how you do it. This lesson has helped me avoid spraying ball dead right. It’s an easier formula to find more fairways if you pay attention. Great info as usual. Thanks.

Genuis explanation 🎉 I use the Hackmotion device. It measures wrist angle as you swing with audio feedback for the correct position. Really helps. Because what you think you're doing may or may not be what you're actually doing. The perfect static wrist position often falls apart during the motion of swinging, without you even realizing it.

Your lead hand replicates my table tennis backhand and your trail hand action is my forehand. Seems natural to me. I had solved the problem you mentioned by rotating my upper body 90 degrees so my lead shoulder and arm were directly over my trail shoulder and arm. Somehow your solution seems simpler. Thanks

Rob thank you for the video, even a year later. I’ve seen so many videos explain the need for “lag” however none whatsoever go into the detail of the wrist, deviation/flexion etc. as a result I’ve pushed and sliced my irons for over a year… not anymore..incredible video and detail I can’t thank you enough. No more going down rabbit holes with other instructional videos again! Sticking to my man Rob only!

Hi Rob Nice lesson for everyone that really wants to hit the ball effortless but in regard to the hinging of the wrists in my early stages of teaching that was the first thing that I showed the students how to hinge the wrist - if the student was a right-handed the left hand wrist hinges a maximum of 30° ∟ when you hold the left forearm with the back of your left hand on a flat line and hinge on a vertical motion. For the right wrist hinges a maximum of 30° ∟ when you hold the left forearm with the back of your left hand on a flat line and hinge on a horizontal motion. A simple explanation would be left hand hinges up and down right hand hinges side to side. Remember that if you bow your wrists too much you wouldn't be able to hinge them as much as the 30° ∟I know Rob did a good job explaining this good luck everyone.

Hi Rob, really appreciated this, never understood the wrist action and this is really helping put some pop on the ball. I typically make solid contact but never had great compression. Now I'm experiencing it. But I want to point out another positive benefit not given enough attention. By keeping the wrist flat on the takeaway, it naturally keeps the right elbow in the down position. The flying elbow has always been my problem. Proof? Hold a an open elbow at top of back swing, then flatten your wrist. The elbow is naturally forced down. In my practice, it seemed during the backswing, the left wrist and right elbow, improbably, work as a key team.(like much about golf, not intuitive!). Just my two cents, seems the right wrist is dominant at the beginning, then somewhere near the top, right forearm/elbow takes over. Anyway, my evaluation may be off, but your video put me on a correct path with a very valuable lesson. Many thanks!

Thanks!!

this is an outstanding video I now understand the wrist movement and had been doing it wrong, possibly would have spent the rest of my live doing it incorrectly. I have to share a bit of my story, I played golf sparingly and retired in May of this year. I broke my leg and because of a ankle injury had surgery and could not walk for several months. I watched the stack and tilt videos and others. Stack and Tilt is the way to go as I can break eighty now and am getting better. Another video Mr. Cheney did was also very important where he discussed what is the goal of the golf shot and for me not to be worried about monster hits but keeping the ball straight and setting up the next shot. I enjoy watching Kyle Berkshire but that is not going to happen. I am perfectly fine with a 235 yard drive in the fairway and a 150 shot to the green which I usually hit. Another thing is you have to trust the swing and not over complicate it. It really is that easy once you get it to hit consistent shots. Thanks for videos I agree the detail instruction is necessary, it helps on the wrist, follow through, etc. I am lucky that I get to play every day and now have swing that I can use for the next 25 years ( I am 63).
