Let's see how adding a small motor to a regular paragliding harness changed the entire experience of paragliding in the flat lands.
We visited a few of our first customers who trusted the SCOUT Zero. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and east Slovenia - countries with very limited options for paragliding. Until now.
Come and join us as we explore their experiences after using the paragliding pod harness with climb assist
SCOUT Zero is not a paramotor. It is a true paragliding pod harness that can be flown with or without climb assist.
It allows the pilots to take off in flat land and use to engine to climb to the nearest thermal. Then switch it off and fly the thermals like you normally would. No more waking up at 6am to travel to the mountains hoping for flyable weather. Simply look out of the window to check the weather and if it seems promising just get out of town to any suitable field. And be ready to take off in few minutes from parking your car.
We hope the SCOUT Zero will allow many pilots to do more paragliding.
- less forecast checking
- lees traveling
- less trying and failing
- more paragliding = anywhere, anytime and in any wind direction

I've spent my life trying to find my niche for flying. I've gone from powered to fixed-wing glider and these days find myself with the PPG, but I am sure that what I really want is to be paragliding though I never seem to have a place to do it. This has got to be my ideal aircraft and I can't wait to get my hands on one. The fact that I can use my existing wing is mind-blowing!

Electric unfortunately has not much range unless you're good to take 30kg of LiPo packs with you. Then you may have about +1h of flight time. Thermalling with the Open PPG may be possible but it's an ePPG. You do not get the free flight feeling with it. There's nothing like the ScoutZero out there. I never felt the desire to fly with an engine on my back. But in the flats you need an entire day to organize winching. With the Zero, once you're acquainted with it, it's such a great flexible trade off. Mixing fuel was new to me too. But it's simple and it takes only about 0.6l to get you to 600m altitude. On a thermal day you only need 300m probably. No thermals? With a full tank you have +2h of motorized air time if you like. To get the same freedom at the same weight with an electric setup it may take 5 years or more. And don't think it will be quieter. The noise is made mainly by the tips of the blades as they spin very fast.

What are the pros and cons of this system in comparison with the soon to be released ducted fan power pod?
@SCOUTaviation
@SCOUTaviation 10 ай бұрын
I can only answer theoretically as I have not seen or flown the fulcrum pod. First there is no reason to believe the ducted pod has less drag than the Zero. Small props are very inefficient (even if ducted) so to transmit same power with a small diameter they must use many more blades inside the duct, more like a fan. Those blades are exposed to airflow and cause drag when engine switched off . Also the drag is a function of the frontal area and the duct itself is quite robust. The cage of the Zero is minimalistic and a folding prop is in development to minimize drag. Secondly, the ducted pod utilizes metal bars under the arms of the pilot like regular paramotors do. The Zero is a regular paragliding harness flyable without the engine too and preserves the same agility, weight-shift and feeling. Thirdly, they developed a brand new engine for this purpose which makes the development process much longer and comes with questions about reliability and availability of spares. I guess they did it because with a small and inefficient prop they need a lot more power to get the same thrust. We used a well proven and reliable engine widely used on paramotors by lightweight pilots... and made the development easier for us and maintenance easier for the pilots. But i am a huge fan of any innovation and I like some aspects of it. I wonder how the metal bars work because I tried them too but failed to utilize them well. respect if they succeeded. I also think the duct looks cool and less like a paramotor. I am curious how they managed to do the duct with a two stroke engine. Based om a NASA study, in order to exploit the benefits of the duct the gap between the prop tip and the duct must be just few millimeters. We tried but the vibrations made the prop hitting the duct. Also upon a hard/impact landing the engine's momentum will make it swing on the rubber mounts and the prop hits the duct on inside. They must have done an excellent job in reducing vibrations or they made the gap larger and thus lost he benefits of the duct. Anyway, I am curious to see it once they release it. Do you have any updates on the release date> Haven't heard of them since then. wow, i did not think i would ever write such a long comment.

Really great work. Indeed, this gear can open completely new opportunities! Unfortunately, I see multiple major problems in Germany starting with a not certified harness and ending in regulations of places to take off and land again. Technically it's a paramotor and therefore needs to meet those regulations. This results in most paragliding takeoff places are not suitable anymore - we need special paramotor takeoffs. Finally you will need a new wings for this because 15 kg is too much and it must be a paramotor wing. This takes the price to 15k €.
@nico_albrecht
@nico_albrecht Жыл бұрын
The harness has the same certifications as normal paramotor harnesses. In small Germany, I fly on official take-off sites such as ultralight sites or offical outside take-off areas. On perfect days you can fly large triangles and land on your start or on other days you can fly from launch site to launch site. If the weather isn't ideal and you don't reach your destination over long distances on thermal crossings, no one will take you to jail as a punishment. At some point, normal paragliding became too expensive for me in the long run. That's why I had to rethink and find another solution. I hope other pilots in my region will follow so we can fly together that makes the hole activitie much easyer. We have to become more creative again and think back to the beginnings.
@OffSurfaceAdventures
@OffSurfaceAdventures Жыл бұрын
@@nico_albrecht Wow respect for your live streams and technical solution! In the end airtime means experience which is safety. I'm still at the beginning and yes it's expensive. I can't go paragliding without driving less than 100 km (in total) which is a cost factor too.
@nico_albrecht
@nico_albrecht Жыл бұрын
@@OffSurfaceAdventuresIn my experience, most paraglider pilots don't really know how flying with a climb assist works and also start for the wrong reasons and with too little experience. Peter gets to the point, we have to look at it very differently. I have to drive a total of 180km to the first normal paraglider take-off place and usually a flight day with take-off and shuttle fee costs me 50 to 80 €. With Scout Zero it costs me 5€ maximum and I usually have 3 to 4x as much airtime on these days.
@haukeplambeck
@haukeplambeck Жыл бұрын
@OffSurfaceAdventures Your comment on a paramotor wing is interesting. I'm sure @nico_albrecht can give his point of view too. I think the ScoutZero benefits from normal wings and should be used with these as the goal is to turn of the engine and fly using thermals. The climb rate you get at full throttle is around 2m/s much less than on a PPG. A small, fast reflex wing for PPG might even be a wrong choice due to its glide ratio, sink rate and speed. It's possible to fly regular gliders slightly overloaded. If you're already at the top then you'll need to get a bigger size next time you upgrade your glider or buy a good used glider. I'm flying 12kg over on my current glider. When upgrading in the near future it'll be 6kg. That's with full fuel tank (6 liters / 1.6 gallons ).

I’ve been paragliding and paramotoring…but I’ve never flown a pod harness. Would you recommend first learning to paraglide with a pod harness before trying the Zero? This solution is very intriguing…I have flown the Atom 80 before and it’s a great engine…but someday, electric motors (and batteries) will be light and powerful enough…that will be truly wonderful!
@SCOUTaviation
@SCOUTaviation Жыл бұрын
The pod harness does not change that much. You would receive a little more feedback from the glider but on the other hand thermals in the flatland are ususally weaker than in the mountains so it will not feel sketchy. Having little paramotor experience helps. We are all waiting for better batteries for our purpose. Until then the Atom80 seems to be the most practical solution. You need only 5 minutes of power in ideal conditions to find the first thermal. But having the ability to fly longer is especially useful for training in weak conditions > instead of landing after 20 minutes you can "cheat" a few times and fly for 4 hours. And you can fly back home on power too. Today's batteries do not provide sufficient energy for that.

You said that this is the only way for flatland flying, yet there are some one person winching systems for a car available, what do u think about this?
@SCOUTaviation
@SCOUTaviation Жыл бұрын
Winching is definitely a solution but most people find out that it is impractical. - requires lot of logistics and many people involved, one or two need to volunteer not to fly that day and operate the winch. With Zero you are independent - you can usually do that on weekends only, with Zero you can fly on Tuesdays too - winch will get you up to around 400 meters AGL. If you aren't lucky to fly into a thermal within 2 minutes you go for landing, pack and wait in the queue for your next turn. With Zero you can stay in the air as long as needed until you find the thermal and switch the engine off. - with Zero you can use the remaining fuel to fly back home at the end of the day. so no hitchhiking.

@SCOUTaviation

Our invention is the geometry of the harness and variable mechanism. We can install any engine and yes, we would like to do electric as well. There were situations when I really appreciated having 2 hrs of motor flight time. For example when I took off too early and the thermals were not strong enough yet. I simply waited in the air. Or I could land and try again later. With empty battery I would go home and miss the day. Also the flight in Belgium, we had weak conditions and now and then we used the motor for few minutes to stay in the air. It was a good practice of coring weak thermals but without power the flight would be 30 minutes instead of 3 hours. For me personally the gas is a clear winner now. I learned to work with the two stroke engine and it runs just perfect for me. Looking forward to denser batteries in the future.

Nothing wrong with power, flying is flying! Says this former hang glider pilot, who added a Soarmaster unit to it to get up to the soaring sites, and then got into ultralights, and has been flying light exp planes for the last 40 years. BUT, I still get a few hours in every year dead stick ridge soaring, once a glider pilot, always a glider pilot! The rare times I fly with another pilot, I can almost instantly tell if they had soaring experience or not, by how they fly thru lift, rather than slowing down and getting some free lift. I may get "there" after them, but I'll use a lot less fuel.

The tank on the XL harness holds up to 6.5 liters. With engine on all the time you get over 2h of level flight. I haven't maxed it out yet as whenever climb rates are good I turned the engine off to go into "quiet bird mode" 😊 As you would try to fly it with your regular glider it's performance may add to efficiency. 3 liner or 2 liner...the new EN C two liners look like a very interesting combination with the Zero. Exciting times.
