How They Expanded Their Sheep Farm WITHOUT Buying More Land (SOLAR GRAZING SHEEP)
This week I was lucky enough to tour my friends Chris and Lyndsey’s sheep farm. They do things a bit differently from me and I love seeing other methods of operating a sheep farm.
Chris and Lyndsey have long wanted to expand their sheep flock, but have been limited with the ability to buy more land to graze their sheep.
They created opportunity by reaching out to a local solar farm company, and a mutually beneficial relationship was established.
Solar farm gets their grass tended to without the added cost of fuel, labour and pesticides…
Chris and Lyndsey now have access to feed they can use now, and even bale and store for winter!
They ventured outside the box in their thinking, and have been able to grow their flock because of it!

I'd always say when we drove past solar farms "why don't they have sheep in there to mow the grass?" So glad there are people out there doing it! It's crazy to see people out there mowing under them, especially in Australia where you want the grass trimmed right down for fire safety before summer.

Sheep are being used for weed control in parks and vineyards where I live. Ducks are being used in the vineyards for pest control as well...

In the UK the solar companies lease the land from the farmers. Grazing with sheep is the preferred option as the land is still available for farming & thus subsidies so the farmer wins all round.

This is very interesting. Starting to see this type of Grazing over here in Germany. Farmers rent their grazing fields to the power company and cont. grazing with their sheep and goats on it. But there are the shepherds who graze their sheep and stay with them for months at a time out on the land and are always on the move, crossing roads and even going down the road blocking traffic for awhile. I like watching your channel even tho I am not into farms(truck driver) I always did like watching tv programs and now youtube, with anything to do with animals nature, etc.

Love this...but not easy to buy lamb meat in USA. For some reason they don't eat lamb or offal ( eg liver etc).Would be huge in NZ and Australia...Can be organic. How about chickens?

Certain nationalities do eat the offal. I have a middle eastern market near me that along with leg of lamb and lamb shoulder, sells lamb heart, liver and kidneys.

She has a Maremma Sheepdog puppy. They are fantastic at looking after flocks. Alpaca are also good with sheep to keep them safe (they chase off foxes)

Great video. Thanks for sharing. One little suggestion I’d make is around fencing. Given the intention of your operation it might be advantageous to look at semi permanent electric fencing. I recently discovered a fibreglass post made by Gallagher. The posts are pre-punched to take 5 strands of steel wire. It’s much easier to manage than the woven mesh stuff.

Techs are visiting panels and have no interest is dealing with fences so we take down and setup on a very regular basis

This makes a great "partnership" for both sides. As her flock grows does she have shelter enough to over-winter the sheep? Maybe being over-picky but there are "wrong" ways to sheep farm. If you're doing it wrong your sheep die, are sick, wormy, starve or run away... There are however near limitless ways to do it right.

I use the same electric net fencing for my sheep. My neighbor uses guard dogs. Guess who has problems with the coyotes? I haven't lost one single sheep to predation. Wish I could say the same for him.

We use electro-net along with LGD's and lamb on pasture.. No predation losses.

dont know if this is helpfull ! but what ive been doing for 40 yrs is bringing in some goats on the last rotation to knock out climbers etc , basically anything the sheep leave behind , but i quickly move them on before they threaten next yrs pasture , the only possible problem i can see in this situation is that goats love to climb up of the ground at times !

Wow! What an interesting partnership. I guess more development is needed to put the stock in barns during the winter. Goats would clear the variety of plants more thoroughly but are more difficult to manage. Another alternative or addition would be to use the “chickshaws” up and down the rows moving them once a day. The chickens would be raised for meat during the warmer months. It would be labour intensive.

We winter the sheep outside (with trees/hollows for shelter) and do bale grazing/bale unrolling. They never see a barn. Goats are too high risk to chew and climb (we have them at home for our wild pastures). Chickens would be a great idea on a smaller scale.

Damage to the panels and/or wires was our big concern too, but no, they leave them alone (the dogs have broken more panels while jumping fences). Our stocking rates are closer to mob grazing --- pretty high so they trample quite a bit, and we move daily.

Goats chew wires, so the solar company don't want them and our insurance doesn't cover them

goats can be very destructive, and would want to butt the panels. They are also notoriously hard to fence in, your fences pretty much have to be tight enough to hold water, though the electric sheep fence in this video has been known to hold them if they've been trained to electric fences.

yes, we do -- they were slated for . shearing in June but excessive rain put it off. They're being done this week!

I only eat plant-based food...is there any chance you are just using the sheep for wool?? 😂😂 If not, it's still way better than all the factory farming/inhumane handling of livestock that drove me to veganism in the first place - be aware I'm not your typical vegan...I'm 64, a mechanical engineer and I own a software company...and I have been into clean energy since 1970
