There are so many barriers in place when it comes to growing food in cities, but education and lack of access to space are the hardest to overcome. Yemi Amu has dedicated her life as a farmer to solving this problem, by starting the only Aquaponics farm in NYC. Oko Farms in Brooklyn is both a working farm which provides fresh food to surrounding neighborhoods, while also actively engaging the public in education on how to grow food for yourself in urban environments.
Women of the Earth is a new show on PBS Terra, produced by Summer Moon Productions, featuring stories of women across America who are leading a new movement to restore and protect the land. By focusing on women in land stewardship roles like farmers and shepherds, the series will explore women’s unique relationship to the earth and their innovative undertakings to heal the earth from climate change.

There are places in the world where the same land has been sustainably farmed for thousands of years and is still productive and there are places that farming methods have destroyed the soil in a few decades. Let’s have more of this lady’s kind of thinking.

We have aquaponic farmers here in the desert southwest. It reduces water usage which is important in a drought prone area. There was a movement to transform swimming pools into aquaponic systems. However, most of the systems here use tilapia which provides another source of food.
@brudo5056
@brudo5056 10 ай бұрын
Aquaponics is a Re-circular system by its nature idea but also in the aquaculture systems RAS (recircular aquaculture systems) is used… aquaponics in its actual form is basically an aquaculture system where the bio filtration and denitrification (aeration tower) is mostly replaced by a botanical/microbial(roots) system. Those swimming pools could also be cleaned by relative simple biological(plants) filtration instead of the more complex technique of aquaponics which requires daily control/maintenance. This Tilapia fish is in general the most strong and economical fish for aquaculture or aquaponics but it has a relative low nutritional value.

It also comes at a cost, the water is less likely to enter the aquifers this way, except for the evaporation from the open water area, plant transpiration, and water change for the fish. Also it has a high energy requirement (and operational), initially expensive, and requires almost daily maintenance. Additionally depending on the feed given, the crops tend to lack micronutrients unlike normally grown in soil. There are lots of traditional soil methods that can be used to save water. Like zai pits and swales that basically subsisted on occasional rain alone. But of course they aren’t perfect either, both requires huge amount of land, which is basically impossible in an urban area

I've also seen people use a grey water system with auqaponics, which adds an extra layer of eco-friendliness to this. This video made me wonder if what the Aztecs were doing with their lake system in Tenochtitlan qualifies as an early example of auqaponics. (I just looked it up... it says the Aztecs were practicing this in 1150 AD, which they called chinampas)

I am typically against aquaponics because it is impractical, ie heavy reliance on plastics. Here it is sensible, as well as done sensibly. She is in a land (soil) poor area so utilizing a materials-intensive system makes sense. This is because this provides a quality food that doesn't travel or store well in an area in need of it. Her use of koi and goldfish is brilliant --because I like them :). There could be more rooftop farmers in large cities. It uses residual heat from the building to the benefit of plants, adds roofing durability by reducing degradation from the sun, reduces air pollution, assists in reducing stormdrain strain, reduces heat island effect, etc. The biggest trick to executing this idea is finding lightweight materials, as well as having reinforced rooftops to handle extra weight loads. Great video

I built a low-cost garden on an old factory roof, and it absolutely thrived. One of the biggest obstacles can be zoning and code issues. Fortunately for my rooftop garden, the local code officer was an open-minded guy who thought it was a great idea, but his predecessor wasn't on board.

Yemi Amu speaking on the aquaponics farm juxapose with the New York City skyline in the back really reinforces that this sustainable form of food production is possible in the inner city. Its possible to scale up aquaponic farms throughout the city; especially where fresh vegetables are not easily accessible. I appreciate when she mentioned the educational impact she had on the youths visiting Oko Farm

Please tell us more about some of these farmers and their farms. Some other commenters have suggested that the Aztecs were practicing something similar to Agroponics in the A.D. period. I also think the uniqueness of this video is the different forms of farming going on and each farm relies on waste products produced by the other farm. It’s also being done in a concrete jungle where grocery stores, fresh fish and high quality produce are hard to come by. She also allocates 50% of everything she produces for free to neighbors who need it. Additionally, she is encouraging ppl who are interested in the unique type of farming that she does to come and learn from her if they like and go forward and help their little or larger communities. Of course everyone deserves to have their stories heard. This farmer’s story is also interesting b/c of her farm’s unique strategies.

Awesome Ive been interested in this kind of farming for years and think it's a underlooked option for farm fish for our food supply. It's been a tough year for the ocean with the increase in temperatures and this allows us the option of controlling heat and cold while providing fresh produce and recycling water that is not polluted. Great work!

The havoc that our agriculture system has wrecked on our microorganisms is insane! I’ve been reading a book lately about conservation agriculture and am very interested to one day try my hand at a little backyard garden of my own. Being able to grow more crops without fertilizer usage, or tilling would drastically reduce the carbon emissions of all the food which we eat! And it even saves us money along the way! In the meantime, it’s convinced me to support legislation which heavily taxes fertilizer sales while also offering training and resources for farms to convert to other systems like aquaponics or conservation ag.

Think you'd find producing food and livestock feed via restoration ag more interesting. It uses interplanted, biome-compatible, food-producing trees, shrubs, vines and perennials placed as alley crops. This is to mimick savannas, and allow ease of maintenance and harvesting. It uses native soils instead of soil supplements. Keylining and swales are typically used to manage soil moisture to even out dry spots and wet spots. Irrigation is used during the first two to three years while the plants establish. It is managed with livestock to control pests, weeds and fertility. Restoration ag restores soils while producing food and livestock feed of higher quality, with more nutrition and calories per acre than conventional ag. This can be done in just about any biome. It's a great way for people to get into farming as the costs are m uch lower than conventional farming Mark Shepard wrote the definitive book on the subject, with lots more details. He started on 100+ acres of degraded, hilly soil in Wisconsin. They soil started as red clay and is quickly and deeply building depth and natural fertility. He has expanded to several other farms in nearby states Very interesting methods.

I practice no dig gardening. While it requires a substantial amount of compost it requires no plowing and no commercial fertilizer. Anyone of modest means and a bit of sunny garden area can do it.

Beautiful and important work, I absolutely love this! I myself have an aquarium with shrimp that is keeping my three Epipremnum aureum alive in my apartment. It's a delicat act to get everything right in the beginning but the payoff is a miniature ecosystem in your home.

I also took eating local fruits and greens for granted😢🌶️🌽🥑🍅🍉🥜🍌🍊🍋 when I lived in Africa. Back home no one has vitamin or mineral deficiency but just a few years outside and a changed diet made my teeth weaker, constant D-vitamin +iron defficiency. The area am in now mostly sells foods that contain less nutrients and am stuck taking supplements 😑

I have been doing traditional organic growing for 40 years but switched to aquaponics 3 years ago to meet the challenges of climate crisis we are now in. Water management and truely more sustainable vegetable and fish production. Our thoughts on this type of growing are totally parallel. I really liked how you fought back about the criticism that it is expensive and needs high tech equipment. Yes it can help take the human factor out of growing, but we growers can do produce on the low cost side. Thank you for bringing this urban farming style more to the forefront. I'm retiring from university teaching and research next year in Japan, but my mission is to spread the aquaponics way here in Japan. Keep up the great work you are doing. Fantastic

Thank you Yemi for sharing your personal story, and Oko Farms. You are so inspiring for the multiple positive impacts you're having in your local community and now, around the world as your story travels! I understand Aquaponics better now thanks to your great explanation. The Chinampas of Xochimilco in Mexico City are still in use today. The knowledge is available to create a good life for humanity, leaving behind what we received. Thank you for reminding that Healing the Earth is possible. Great job to the crew and PBS for this hopeful story with Yemi, who radiates beauty and empowering expertise.
