Ecclesiastes may seem like the most depressing book in the Bible to most. But to me it’s the most SOBERING book in the Bible. It keeps me from being obsessed with the world and the things it offers, and to rather desire the things that will never pass away; God and His words.

Totally agree. This book is underrated! Reading it helps me to avoid traps in my thinking. Yeah, this world is screwed up and ultimately we just live, die and are forgotten about. It does sound nihilistic at first, and without the eternal life we have been given in Christ it could be depressing. But to me, understanding this message frees me to just try to love God and enjoy the simple things in life, because really, that’s what we have to enjoy!
@jakeb3055

I think sometimes the most powerful thing is to be told the very thing that our soul already knows but can’t put into words or can’t explain. We are often told that life is good, enjoy it. But yet there are many things that happen in life that are incredibly disappointing, evil, unjust, and tragic. But if we are told that life is good without being able to acknowledge that there is a whole lot of bad, it can drive us crazy. Ecclesiastes gives it to us straight, no chaser. No qualification. Life is hard and then you die. But God gives us things to enjoy while we are here but in the end, those things are meaningless. In the end, God’s commandments are the only meaningful thing. Our hope is in the kingdom to come where all things are restored and justice goes forth and righteousness fills the earth. For now, we labor and toil. Just being able to hear that message and acknowledge how undesirable this world is can be incredibly helpful.

A really helpful way of understanding Ecclesiastes is the contrast between “gain and gift”. When the Teacher sees life as gain he only finds meaninglessness. As he despairs “What do I gain from the work of my hands?” But when he pivots and sees things as “gift” everything changes. So he finds comfort in food and drink and sleep as “Gifts from God”. This contrast has helped me when I think about wealth and possessions and trying to be content. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

By far, Ecclesiastes has always been my favorite book of the bible. It's a paradox; it knows it contradicts itself and at first glance, one would wonder why something so pessimistic is in the bible. But like one of its main themes, nothing matters. We all die, one way or another. We grow old. Sitting in a bus earlier today, thinking over all the problems I'm facing, and then I see an elderly woman on the bus. It hit me that whatever problems she faced when she was my age, 22, probably don't affect her as much now that her hair's all white and her skin's wrinkled. While I don't know her, and I'm not judging her, her presence reminded me that we often get so stuck in our minds, our hearts, our circumstances, that in reality, it doesn't matter. So why is it in the bible? Because while it does say nothing matters, nothing is ever new, anything new becomes old, Ecclesiastes chooses to hope. In the face of reality, of the facts, Ecclesiastes chose God. Who goes beyond anything and everything.

I read Ecclesiastes in a period of my life were I was with a lot of questions about everything. I remember that pessimism was with me in every thought and question. It was a lot about life, God, me, my family, my future. And when I read it, it was the Lord telling me in my ear: It's okay to have questions. I believe that times of reflection must be lived with God to obtain fruit from them. If someone is struggling with time remember this: That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away (Chapter 3 verse 15). Don't forget that God identifies himself as "I Am Who I Am" so HE IS. (John 17:5, Colossians 1:17, 2 Peter 3:8)

A few months back, I began going back to church and taking my walk of faith more seriously than I ever had. Ecclesiastes was the first book I read in the Bible at random and it resonated with me completely. At face value, a lot of Ecclesiastes comes off as cynical and nearly morbid, but that’s the point. A lot of life is made up of distractions and the millions different things we can do as God gave us free will but we must understand that true fulfillment only comes from God. We can learn, see and do as much as we want but ultimately, all things lead to God. The proclamation at the start of of Ecclesiastes 1 “Vanity of vanities. All is vanity,” is meant to be as harsh as it sounds but one should not go all doom-and-gloom about it. Life is beautiful, absurd, unjust and incredible and at the end of every path is God. And I liked your orange juice comment at the end, Orlando. I feel the same about what before were rather mundane things. Knowing God is behind every little thing is a great feeling.

This is exactly what I felt three weeks ago, the senselessness of it all. I’m at a crossroads in my life where I have to choose a new course for my life because the one I was previously on did not only fail, but failed spectacularly. It was the path I took because I believed it was the one that would be the most virtuous where I could serve people but also exhaust all that I have for good but it ended up horribly and I feel like a worse person than before. Now I don’t know what to do with my life, I see left and right people getting what they want without asking, without trying. People who have been selfish, people who have no care in the world, people who are too good to try, people who hate other for no good reason, people who live for intrigue at the cost of others who don’t understand their games. And I feel like the fool who can never win. My high ideals, my hopes and values feel like a sham to be laughed at and ridiculed by those who don’t know any better and those who play stupid power plays. I listened to a video about meaninglessness of life and it talked about Ecclesiastes, when I read it, it was like the spirit breathe into me because for the first time it was true, what was said to me was not some generic motivational word salad or detached call to hold onto hope, it was just real life spoken through words from ancient times. It wasn’t gaslighting me into being okay with today and what’s to come. It affirmed what I had always felt but was externally denied in the world. That alone gave me a ton of relief. I got to sleep peacefully that night, early morning I had coffee with my Dad and I told him about that book and we got some peace, just looking around at nature and praising God for making it so beautiful. I did my mundane works with a lit of peace that day.

Man Ecclesiastes is so powerful. One night I had a dream and that book came up in my head. I immediately went to the Bible and read the entire book. A book I never even read from being a “half and half Christian” for so long. It really spoke to me. The very opening alone “meaningless meaningless”.
